For Biology, that’s right. All the best for your BCS invite. Should be coming your way soon.

Does the MIT Biology program send all their invites simultaneously or in waves? Do I still have a chance there?

Just a status update for anyone who’s curious …

All Neuroscience programs
Interviews: UCSD, Johns Hopkins, WUSTL, UCLA, UW Madison, UC Irvine
Waiting on: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, UCSF, Columbia, UC Davis

has anyone heard from UC Denver Neurosci yet?

ymmit, thanks for the info about Stanford admissions. (do you go to MIT by any chance?)
i haven’t seen any recent Stanford notifications, do you know if they notify in waves? and if so, how do wave admissions generally work? top students get invited first, then if there are any empty slots, they notify others? just curious…

I do, and I should ask you the same thing! Are you a MIT-ten? Why are you already applying? PM me and maybe we’ll meet up to support each other :P

I’m getting estimates that programs take 20-30% of those that interview? I’m wondering what percentage of those accepted turned down the offer and went to other schools. What percentage of those that interviewed and got accepted at 5-20 ranked schools, turned down the offer and went to 1-4 ranked?

BiochemGuy-

I don’t have an answer, but where did you get the 20-30% estimates? Everything I’ve heard has been 50 and above for most schools.

so in the invite for Berkeley MCB, it says there is a max allocation of 70 prospects for each of two dates - which means there were about 140 people invited. The dept. published data showing 44 matriculated students last year. assuming they get between one third to one half of the students they accept to matriculate (this sound about right), those of us that have interviews have pretty good shots there, especially if matriculation % is closer to one third. Does anyone have a pretty good estimate of what the real matriculation % is?

I think everyone’s being too pessimistic. Most programs will accept the majority of those they interview. There is a good chance that people accepted into a top 10 program (say, Stanford) have been accepted to other good schools. If somebody gets into Stanford, MIT, and Harvard (and if all 3 options are equally likely) then there’s only a 33% chance they’ll accept the offer from Stanford. So what I’m saying is that many students who are offered admission don’t accept the offer. If you think about it, most people apply to 5+ programs. This means that >80% of offers are not accepted -this, combined with the fact that people who apply to top schools usually apply to MANY top schools, shows that they don’t need to reject a lot of people to get their class size down significantly from the initial interview number. I’ve been told that most programs admit most interviewees. And think about it. They are paying for your plane flight, hotel, etc. Why do so if you aren’t going to extend an admission to the student?

furiousbalancing,

Can I ask what is your field? I applied to Boston University Microbiology Department (through division of graduate medical science). A faculty called me about 2 weeks ago and asked for the 4th LOR from my boss. He said they just begin to review applications. I have not heard from them since. (I also haven’t got the LOR from my boss yet).

virion,

At BU, I applied with 3 LOR to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, for Cell & Molecular Biology. That deadline was yesterday, so presumably they’re still reviewing applications.

Got an invite to interview for UC Berkeley Biophysics today. Interview dates are 2/17-2/20, then I get to head over to UCSF (iPQB-Biophysics) until the 22nd for an overall nice trip to San Francisco!

Just got an email invite for Stanford Cancer Bio (so they are still sending out invites).

I saw at least two other people also got interviews at NIH/Hopkins.
I have decided to accept the invitation!
Hope to see both of you there if not good luck with your other interviews!

Just got an email invite for Stanford Cancer Bio as well.

furiousbalancing,

I thought the BU Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Cell & Molec Bio deadline was Dec. 1st (or 7th, two sites gave different dates. I applied before the 1st to be sure). I also applied to the BU division of graduate medical sciences program, and their deadline was Jan. 1st.

I heard from BU GSAS on Jan. 8th for an interview on Feb. 22 and 23.

Has anyone heard from Penn State’s Genetics program (Hershey or College Park?) I spoke with admissions and she told me they have an interview weekend Jan 23rd, so they must have contacted someone.
