Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

Got an email today with an interview invite to Duke CMB!! Interview is Feb 13-15 (also, they have another one Feb 27-Mar 1 in case anyone is wondering)

Anyone going to UCLA ACCESS tomorrow? I know they say the first two days are casual, but how casual? What do you guys plan to wear?

I emailed Tufts Sackler about the Integrated Studies Program (I applied Cell, Molec, and Developmental) to see if all interviews have been notified. I know some people on this thread heard a long time ago from Tufts Sackler, so I wanted to know if I was out.

The reply:
“The deadline had just passed so applications are beginning to be reviewed. No decisions have been made at this time.”

Maybe there is still a chance for an interview?

@gsfall09 - The second Tufts Sackler interview weekend is February 27th, so there is still quite some time left. Hell, the first interview weekend is still a little over 3 weeks away! I got an invite a few days ago to an interview that is at the end of next week, so I wouldn’t necessarily throw in the towel yet just because it feels like its late in the interview season (it’s really not yet).

Thanks. I really want an interview to Tufts Sackler and knowing that makes me feel a little better.

The deadline for Tufts was less than a week ago, so I think the majority of interview invitations have yet to be given

I just heard from Columbia University for interviews. I looks like their Open House is going to be the first week of March (3/5 - 3/8). I’m still waiting to hear from Stanford Biosciences, but if both go through, it looks like the interview dates will be overlapping. Anyone facing the same dilemma? Any suggestions?

Hey, just thought I’d post since this thread has been quite useful.

Interviews: Gerstner Sloan-Kettering, Johns Hopkins CMM, NYU Sackler, UCSF BMS, UCSD BMS, Stanford Cancer Bio
Accepted: Harvard BBS
Declined: UPenn CAMB, UW-Seattle MCB, Weill Cornell BCMB
Waiting: Rockefeller

Stats:
US citizen
GPA: 3.89 (overall), 3.92 (sciences) at private research university
Major: Biology - Biochem and Mol Bio
GRE: 680V (94%), 800Q (96%), 6.0AW (97%), 660 Biochem (90%)
Research: 3 years in 2 different labs, no papers
Recs: 3, subjectively strong

Also, funkybuddha, I think “extravaganza” is truly the best way to describe the GSK interview… I can’t wait to hear back from them (with good news I hope)!

xiv21, I can’t believe you didn’t get an interview at UPenn for CAMB.
For the UPenn-BGS program, which is actually a part of their medical school, I got an interview with these stats:

Stats:
Senior - Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
GPA: 3.672 (overall), science/non-science GPA within .05
Major: Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (MBB - one major)
GRE: 560V (77%), 770Q (88%), 5.0AW (77%), 530 Biochem (53%)
My research is strong, 2 years in same lab, plus work-study lab assistant first two years. A’s on all research papers. Nothing published, but data being used for PI’s NIH grant proposal for Feb., which I indicated to my schools.
Also, I assume all my recs. are good. My PI’s is going to be great as she loves me, I figure my other two will be really good as well, as I got A’s in both of those profs. lab courses (honors orgo lab and intro to mbb research)

But, wow, I can’t believe you didn’t get into UPenn CAMB. My 53% biochem is horrible (didn’t study, didn’t think it would be tough…), and your stats are all better than mine. I don’t want to be inflammatory or anything, but maybe your personal statements and/or research statements weren’t what the programs are looking for. Because everything else looks great.

I am still waiting on Weill Cornell, but one of my letters got in late so who knows. Also waiting on WUSTL-DBBS, Rockefeller, Princeton, and Rutgers.

He did get in but declined the Interview, I believe…

Ah, that makes sense. Technically, declined is different from rejected, the former being our decision, the latter being the adcom’s decision.

Hey,

Received an interview from Cornell (Ithaca) BBS.

So far:

Applied: Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Rockefeller, Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, MIT

Interviews: Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern

Rejections: Yale

Still hoping for Stanford!

I think I might not have gotten in to UPenn CAMB either… since i still did not hear a thing from them.

My stats were ok. I went to top 5 university in the country, got GPA of 4.4 or 4.5 [overall/major] in Bioengineering, GREs: 480[verb], 790[quant], 4.5 [writing], Biochemistry and Cell Bio 690 [95%], TOEFL 113/120, some additional workload. international student.

I had 4 years of research experience, 2 papers in review, conference poster, another non-peer review paper, 3 or 4 recommendations from research supervisors. I am pretty sure they were good.

The main problem, apart from GPA and GRE verbal, was that I was not particularly interested in the program, and it was the only non-engineering department I applied to. So either of these three was the reason.

Anyone hear from Johns Hopkins (BCMB or CMM) or Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (BMB)?

My transcripts and/or GRE were not matched up correctly until I called the departments in 1st week of Jan. I’m hoping the fact that they didn’t match up my stuff on time doesn’t put me out of the running (since apps were submitted in 1st week of Dec, before deadline).

Any thoughts?

Yeah, fishy is right. I got interview invitations with those schools on my “declined” list, but due to conflicts with other interview times, I had to decline attending.

@8widgets: I’m at the Johns Hopkins CMM interview weekend right now, but I think there is another interview weekend in Feb. I heard from them pretty quickly though, within a week of the deadline, although I had submitted my app earlier in Dec. I’m not sure if they are still sending out invites though. However, I do know that each program is distinctly separate, so I only applied to CMM and have no idea what BCMB or PH is like. But I just have to say that the people here are all pretty nice. I can’t say I’ve met a faculty or grad student that I didn’t like.

Any news from Harvard BBS, Rockefeller or Stanford Cancer bio? Have anyone attempted to contact them?

aradian7, I also applied to cornell (ithaca). My program is called comparative biomedical sciences. I haven’t heard anything from them. Can you tell me the full name of your program?

Congrats on all the interviews.

Anyone still waiting to hear/have heard from Duke Neurobiology?

And is Emory and UCSD Neuroscience still sending out invites or are they pretty much done?

So far I only have 1/7 interviews (University of Miami-one of my top choices) but no rejections yet.

Have any official Neuroscience rejections been sent yet? (Stanford, UCSD, Columbia, Duke, Emory)

Thanks

Penicillin, I am waiting for almost same programs, save for fact that I am a US citizen, which means that at this point, you are more in luck of getting in than I am.

Penicillin, I tried emailing Rockefeller to inquire about the status of my application, but I haven’t received any responses back, maybe I will try calling next week.

Brainlab, I am waiting to hear from UCSD neuro as well. According to grad cafe, it seems that many if not all interviews were sent out at the end of last week, but their interview weekend are still one month away so there is still hope. Although according to grad cafe, one international applicant already received interview so my chances aren’t too great :(
