Did Columbia call or e-mail you? What were the possible weekends?

Jan 30 or Feb 13–Friday events and Saturday events.

I got a visiting weekend invite from Yale BBS computational biology and bioinformatics program. (I’m curious that it’s called visiting not interview weekend. I’m wondering what the difference is.)

Oh and @ Diane: I got an email.

Just received interviews from:

WashU, MCB via phone for Jan. 23.

UPenn, CMB via email for Jan 15-17.

ec1234 - does Rockefeller send physical letters, or do they call/email?

asubeedee:

I applied to Molecular Cell biology, too. I think it’s the same program as you. or not?

Prfreire:

Which program do you apply at Baylor?

PhD-Bound?:

Congrat! I don’t have cellphone, should I call the program?

Just received an interview from Scripps, file completed by mid-Nov.

conanbot, which school and why call?

rockefeller sends a package

PhD-Bound?:

Wash U.
Because asudeebee and you got invitation by telephone, but I don’t have a cellphone.
After you submit the application, did the program send you when the admission committee will review the application? I found in the website (for check the status) that after you complete the application, the program will send this information but I didn’t get it.

Conan, last week I got sent an email telling me that my file has passed initial screening and has been forwarded it to the committee, it also told me to name 10 PIs whos research interests me. So, it made me believe that interview will arrive after that email, if you had received that email maybe you should give them a call.

PhD-Bound?

Thanks, I didn’t get that email.

currently:

Interviews: UNC BBSP (call from micro faculty), UMich PIBS (call from micro faculty), UCLA (email)

Applied/Applying without any notification: Washington - Seattle, Berkeley, Caltech, MIT, Texas, Princeton, Cambridge (UK)

Got a call from UMich PIBS (pharmacology) today. Interview in late January.

aradian 7:

what were the possible dates?

PhD Bound:
When did you finish your app to U Penn? I applied to CMB as well and it is one of my favorite program of all. Do you think they would send out emails in rounds?

I heard from Wash U via phone. Interview for Feb. 27. (genetics program), which is the last date out of 3.

They asked me if I was available end of Feb. and I said yes (Grr I should have asked when the other dates were b/c on the website it says that they do rolling admissions and that it’s to your benefit to apply early and interview early but I don’t know if that matters that much- anyone have thoughts on this?) but I was just so excited about getting an invite/lack of sleep made me not think things through.

I also have a question regarding how to dress for interviews/the whole interview weekend? (I’m a girl btw)

asubedee, I submitted my Penn application early Nov and was complete in 2 weeks. I don’t know if invites are sent out in batches, my guess would be yes.

bionerd, don’t worry about the interview date, the coordinator told me that dress code is business casual.

You should generally dress for interviews at a level that’s about one notch up from what you would normally wear – khakis and a sweater would be perfectly acceptable, as would a skirt and top. Very few people wear suits, and very few people wear jeans with holes in them. Other than that, it’s about your personal comfort level – you want to dress in a way that makes you feel confident and professional and ready to talk about science.

(I asked my PI if I should wear a skirt to my qualifying exam, and he looked at me, horrified, and said, “You don’t want to dress up so much that they think you’re trying to distract them because you have no data.” Um, what?)
