Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

You mean “personally” telling you, as in personalized letter?
Then its good, they appreciate your talent and committment, but you are not a fit, right?
HST is a very medical department, little less of research, takes longer time, you have to learn anatomy. It might just not be a right fit for you. If i remember you were applying mostly to BME and BioE.

ahhh…
I decided to check my online application for OHSU. I thought maybe there would be something there. And apparently one of my LOR’s didn’t complete the recommendation properly. A horrible error for me not to catch. It still says ‘in progress.’ I remember checking back in December, and it said it was in progress. I got busy with winter-mester and didn’t check again
I don’t know what can be done now…

@NIURO: I applied for the Human Biology program.

Ah, nice. I applied to the Neuroscience program and I’m headed there on Thursday. This is my first interview so I’m just a little nervous.

So what are some of the questions you all have asked your interviews that made them go “that’s a good question” or they have had to take time to think about it. You know those responses mean a good job on your part!

In my case, questions like that were very specific to the project at hand. Some also integrated other current research for compare and contrast.

jagenius: thanks for the message! I’m also an international student, applied to 18, but only heard back from 5 until now (all rej). Anyway, I’ll keep on waiting…

danielge, what programs rejected you?

No Prob Danielge! Personally I think that international students need a lot more support during this excruciating process (Yup, I’m biased). Anyway, sorry to hear about your rejections, but 18 is still quite a lot of schools. You’ll be accepted to even one, provided that you evaluated your credentials effectively and applied accordingly. Anything else was just a waste of your money. Hang in there!

Congratulation to your acceptance to UNC!
I was wondering, when did you go there for interview?? I had interview there on the last weekend.

The key really is to be aware of their research, read up on them beforehand. But I wouldn’t suggest acting like you’re an expert on the subject. There have been interviews where the interviewer did research in a field with which I had zero familiarity, and in such cases, I think its easier to be sincere and just ask them to explain what they do, how they got interested in the topic. Then, sometimes they say something that pops questions into your head, and even if you think the questions aren’t particularly impressive, you should ask anyway. At least, I feel like they are looking for someone who can just carry on a thoughtful scientific dialogue.

Sweet, just got the email from the Dept. Chair at UPenn BGS that I was offered acceptance! It’s my first acceptance and I’m super excited! Now I can relax at my upcoming interviews and just see what happens!

just got an interview invitation from Weill Cornell for next week! Extremely surprised…i thought i was out of the running for this one!

I received a number of acceptances and one rejection so far for BME:

Acceptances:
UC Davis (BME)
Boston University (BME)

Interviews:
RPI (BME)

Rejection:
Johns Hopkins

Waiting:
Tufts (BME)
Mass. Inst. of Technology (Bioengineering)
Harvard Med. School (BBS, Div. of Medical Sciences)

I’m hoping for Harvard, but I’m thinking about going to RPI or BU. Thoughts?

congrats backflip! I’ll see you there - I’m in for immuno, how about you? :)

Congrats MCTitans. I heard nothing but good things from someone who interviewed at Penn. I’m really looking forward to visiting the school in a couple weeks.

biochemistry (part of a biochemistry/molecular and cell biology combined program)

Hi everyone!

I have been following this discussion for months so I thought I should finally post something.

Neuroscience PhD
Applied: University of Kansas (KU) University of California Riverside (UCR), Michigan State, Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), UNC, Indiana at Bloomington
Rejected: UNC
Accepted: KU
Interviews: UCR (Feb 20-22), Indiana (March 5-7)
Waiting: Michigan, Alabama

I am really excited that I am accepted to one neuroscience program so some of the pressure is off, but I am also really nervous about my interviews as well. I really want to go to Indiana it is my top choice but I am also interested in some of the research at UCR as well.

Has anyone else applied to KU, Indiana or UCR? If so will you be going there at the same time as me?

Neuro_007

I was actually scheduled to go to the IU-Bloomington interviews next week for the Neuroscience program, but because I already had something scheduled during that time, I did my interviews today. Working in a lab here and being a local also made rescheduling a little more convenient. The professors were extremely nice and I really like the research environment here. I had some nervousness going into the interviews, but once I sat down with the first prof the jitters went away!

DNA_Dude - yeah, Penn was absolutely spectacular! The facilities are modern and vast, the faculty are welcoming and collaborative, not secretive and aloof. The current students are very happy and are doing fantastic work. And the campus is in Philadelphia, which has tons of great things to do outside of graduate school life. I’m definitely considering going there. I’m sure your interview there at the end of February will be great!

I applied to Developmental Biology subgroup - do you remember which one you applied to?

Hey Niuro!

Who do you want to work for at Indiana? Are you working there in a lab now?
