Official Biomedical Sciences Interviews/Acceptances 2009

I am wondering when you guys say 80% or 90% of those who are invited for an interview get accepted. What about the other 10% or 20%? Do they get rejected right away? Or they will just hold those 10% or 20% for awhile until they know how many people turn down the offers?

I emailed Penn CAMB a couple days ago. They said they just sent out the last batch of interview invites, and if you weren’t contacted, it’s pretty much a reject. Sigh, 0 for 4 so far…

Anyone heard from Tufts Sackler (Biomedical Sciences), UMaine-Orono (Molecular Microbiology), Cornell (Microbiology) or Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (Pathobiology)? I also applied to JHU for Human Genetics and already got a rejection from them, but has anyone heard from Pathobiology?

Have any international applicants applied to U Texas at Austin (CAMB), Brandeis (MCB), U Virginia (Bio), U Vermont (CAMB) or Mayo Grad School and heard back from them?

I’ve been waiting for almost 3 full months for some of those, this is so frustrating.

embely: I am waiting for Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Pathobiology too. I hope they have not finished sending out invitation.

I also applied to Dartmouth College’s Molecular and Cellular Biology. Has anyone heard from this Dartmouth?

Howdy. Tufts Sackler ISP had their first of two weekends last week, and the second is the last weekend of February (I think?). Roughly 30 applicants per weekend, for a total of 10-15 spots. Not sure how that helps in terms of Biomedical Sciences department, if it’s different than ISP, but some info is better than none, eh?

Has anyone who got interview at UNC BBSP on 5th Feb heard anything back?

Has anybody decided on where to go, or is everyone going to wait till April 15?

thanks DrugsRfun! yeah i thought i just applied to ‘Biosciences’ at Sackler, but I just re-examined the site and I applied to the Molecular Micro department. They gave me a username and password to go to their site and find out my final admissions decision, but theres nothing there yet. I don’t know whats taking them so long!

Has anyone applied to Brown University?

I don’t think I remember a single person on this forum saying that they have applied to Brown except me. I just found out that Brown just concluded its second round of interviews this past weekend for the MCB program within the Biomed group. But I have not seen a single entry on Grad Cafe.

If anyone has any information on Brown please let me know. Thanks.

Nissle1917: I received an interview request in mid December from Brown MCB. I declined to interview, but I believe they have completed their interview requests.

Thanks biosciprosp.

bernard - I’ve decided on UPenn.

MCTitans:

What other schools did you interview for, and what was it about UPenn that made you want to go there?

NIURO: It’s a multi-pronged reasoning, but here are some major points. The first involves how welcoming the professors and current students are. An emphasis on collaboration and cooperation is highly stressed. Whereas places like Rockefeller have big “assembly line” labs of 50+ people and low collaboration between labs, UPenn is very familial and less competitive. It’s hard for 30+ grad students of all years to say all weekend how thrilled they are with their program unless they really mean it.

Second, the location is key. All of my top schools that I applied to have great programs, but Philadelphia is a prime location. It’s cheap enough that you can live on your own or buddy up with a roommate and not have to eat Ramen noodles each day (stipend is $28,500 for next year). Plus I have family in the area, it’s close to North Jersey, which is where my parents live, and I have friends at Penn now. When you’re going to be at a place for 6 years, you want to be comfortable.

And lastly, my decision to attend UPenn is predicated that I didn’t get into any of my other top schools. I have an interview at Rutgers next weekend (mostly for networking in my mind), and while I love my undergraduate experience here, I just can’t picture myself spending another 6 years here all on the same campus where all my undergrad amenities are! My 53% BioChem GRE score is what killed me (didn’t study, should have!) but thankfully UPenn looked past that.

So overall, you can’t go wrong with UPenn. I just felt extremely welcomed there, before, during, and after the interview weekend. For me, it just fits and feels right, and I know I will be happy there.

MCTitans, you had an easy decision to make. In my case, I am torn between two great schools that are about the same in research output and in reputation. Phily is a nice city, rich in history and has good transportation system. And its close to your family so you can visit them if you feel homesick. Good choice!

Bernardzhu - where, if I may ask?

Does anyone know if Harvard immunology sends/ sent some form of a rejection? I know it’s been three weeks since the interview but I also don’t want to be left holding a torch…

I think harvard tends to take their sweet time dishing out acceptances. I wouldn’t worry yet

fishy333, the two programs that I am deciding between are Princeton computer science and Yale BBS (computational biology track). I am in bioinformatics. Both allows me to do interdisciplinary work, but the focus is a bit different in each school. Y is biology-oriented and P is computational-oriented. The supervisor at Y is really well established and has Nature/Science publication each year. The one at P is a rising star, and has published a few widely cited papers in the past. Any suggestions?
