<p>I think it depends on the school/program. From firsthand experience I believe most programs inform you as soon as you’ve been “recommended for admission” by the department. However, I have also seen programs where the first admissions news I heard consisted of an official offer letter from the Graduate School.</p>
<p>I am favoring the all three are rejected hypothesis.</p>

<p>I’m voting for “UCSF is extremely laid back and is therefore painfully slow in notifying people of their decisions”. UCSF was the last school I heard from about interviews so I’m not surprised.</p>
