Official Brown ED 2017 Results

@highlyedumacated, no need to be bitter. Brown does review applicants holistically. Just because you were deferred, doesn’t mean that they do not. Many qualified applicants who deserve to get in do not, simply because of lack of space and/or a weak spot in an application. On average, 70% of Brown EDers are deferred; we can’t all get in.
A holistic process doesn’t guarantee that those who make up for weak spots (usually academics) using stronger parts of the application (a heartfelt essay or a great extracurricular experience) will get accepted. It’s not used in order to fill in gaps with other components. You were not deferred because your application was not viewed holistically. Chin up and try again RD round.

haha thanks for your sympathy. i left a lotta other stuff out of my quick “stats” that i posted but i guess im just really stunned that i didn’t even get deferred. I was REALLY expecting to get deferred and the reject just took me completely off guard. i guess it just wasnt meant to be brown…getting flat out denied from your dream school since 7th grade hurts yall. anybody reading this, dont let your love for one thing consume you. colleges are weird and weird things happen

Drjoe - Where else are you applying? You have great stats and will do very well.

NEW QUESTION
Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: my common app essay was about my hobby of reading tarot cards and applying what I learned from them to the world at large.

Decision: Deferred

[] Volunteer/Community service: Key Club (170 Hours), American Red Cross Club (70 hours), Hospital Volunteer (40 hours), Volunteered at a surgery center (300+ hours)
[] Summer Activities: Worked at the fair, SAT and ACT classes (didn’t write in app)
[] Essays: Average. I’m a decent writer, but I didn’t have a lot of time so they didn’t turn out as good as they could have. Maybe a bit generic.
[] Teacher Recommendation: (AP Bio Teacher) She likes me, but doesn’t really know me that personally, letter may have been generic. (Chemistry Teacher/Track Coach) She likes me, but same as above, and it was a bit rushed.
[] Counselor Rec: Large class, but she likes me. I can’t imagine that it was spectacular, but I don’t think it was bad. Maybe generic.
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: Went wonderfully. I really connected with my interviewer and we talked for about 1.5 hours about my passion for medicine, interest in film, and about my school/city as well.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[] Intended Major: Biology (PLME Applicant)
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Public, but very competitive with a large Asian population
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: >250K
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): my passion for medicine
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: A lot of volunteer experience, genuine concern for others, good test scores and grades.
[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: my passion for medicine and concern for others.
[] Weaknesses: Nothing really too out of the ordinary; I talked to my interviewer about my passion for film as well, but I didn’t write about it in my application, so that might’ve helped had I done it :frowning: Essays were kind of rushed, so I didn’t really get to think of anything too inspirational.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Application was probably too generic, essays weren’t that strong.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: ED[/li][/ul]

NEW QUESTION[ul]
[li] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I’d have to say that my concern for others really showed in my essay and volunteer experience. However, it may not have been special enough. [/li][/ul]

I honestly was expecting a rejection from Brown, so I was surprised when I saw my deferral. I’m a PLME applicant, so I was super unsure. Not sure how well my application will stand out among the RD applicants, but hoping for the best. Congratulations to all of you!

ACCEPTED !!! :slight_smile:

stats later if I feel like doing it…

@lacrossemom
I’ve been accepted to Tulane Honors with 100k scholarship, UT PLAN II Honors. I’m applying to USC, Dartmouth, Rice, and Upenn regular decision just to test my luck (from life experiences I’m quite bad at gambling haha). If anyone wants to see a bigger version of my resume let me know. Our counselor makes us cut it short to two pages so it only has the “significant” things but it should be more than enough for my overview.

I’m not trying to diss anyone here or come off as “that guy”, but I felt that I was at least comparable to the people who have posted deferred stats. I guess the biggest let down is why I didn’t even get an explanation for rejection.

NEW QUESTION
[li] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I guess that I’m very humanities focused (dance, journalism), yet I’m taking by far the most advanced math offered at my school. But I guess I don’t have much of a hook other than being smart and accomplished, just like all the other applicants.
[/li]

As a favor to all of us upset over a deferral/ rejection, please don’t say you were accepted because your essays were really honest or true to you. I know I really poured everything I had into my application, as I’m sure the majority of applicants do. It’s tough enough to write a very personal application and basically be told you’re not good enough without having those lucky enough to be accepted tell you that you just should’ve been more honest or whatever. Congrats to everyone who got in and good luck to everyone else deferred!

You’re supposed to take 2 SAT Subject Tests. :/

DrJoe-
Did others from your high school apply?

@Nervousmom
One other student from my school applied he is cum laude and I’m not so I think they compared my app to his and trashed mine because of it. It’s the only real explanation I can think of as to why I was outright rejected

@drjoe92
Is it possible you were missing something in terms of standardized testing requirements? Brown requires either the SAT plus 2 subject tests or the ACT with writing. Maybe you just didn’t list everything, but in your stats you only have 1 subject test, and you don’t have a writing score for the ACT. (Even still, I would expect that you’d get deferred for something like that.)

@nhartmann10 yeah I just didn’t put everything in my stats. I have a 740 chemistry sat and 800 math 2. 11 on both essay portions of sat and act. The other kid from my school was accepted. I also did a bunch of shadowing with surgeons and witnessed first hand numerous operations. sponsored 2 kids for 6-12th grade education…blah blah there’s more but I guess it’s just luck of the draw. I definitely had all the required material submitted I guess I just got unlucky :(
