[] What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I give a **** about a lot of things. I come from an interesting family background of social justice/public sector awesomeness, so I had a lot to draw on there for essays.
[] Weaknesses: I am from the east coast, white, upper-middle class, etc.
[] Why you think you were accepted: It’s holistic soooo… everything. And a lot of luck.
NEW QUESTION
[*] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I wrote one of my supplement questions about making skateboard videos. Dylan Cole-Kink - YouTube if you wanna see them. hehe.

Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I’d have to say that my concern for others really showed in my essay and volunteer experience. However, it may not have been special enough.

I’m PLME and i thought i had a rejection coming my way. Brown doesnt accept applicants from my school that much and I was the only one who applied. I dont know how to feel about this deferral.

NEW QUESTION
[*] Your “Brown” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Being Alaskan and Kalmyk, Karate

Whoa…they must have dug something up on you that made you an unattractive applicant. maybe a raunchy facebook post? My credentials don’t even begin to compare with yours and I was deferred. If it’s any consolation, I highly doubt many other schools will pass you up.

Hey drjoe92! you have some great choices besides Brown! was your 3.6 GPA weighted? maybe Brown unweights GPAs of everyone to compare apples and apples???

Decision: REJECTED

Senior Year Course Load: Molecular Biology (Princeton University Special Student Status), AP BC Calc, AP US History, Honors World Literature, AP Latin

[] Volunteer/Community service: tons

[]School Type: competitive private school
[]Ethnicity: blonde haired, blue eyed, the works
[]Gender: gurrlll
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

[/ul]Reflection[list]
[]Strengths: relatively solid stats for brown
[]What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: computer science, why open curriculum works best for my intended major, my community service work, quirks i guess
[]Weaknesses: i could list a ton but apparently brown liked thems oo
[]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: stats and nothing more
[li]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: im dunzo
[/li]

may I please note that i think it’s completeeee that brown reviews apps “holistically”. You have got to be kidding me. I’m not going to make up some crap about how I thought i got in because of my essays, my recs, whatever. I got in because my stats were acceptable for Brown, and I worked my butt off for them. I don’t mean to sound really pessimistic, but I know plenty of people more interesting than I and probably better candidates for Brown (beyond the stats) that either got deferred or rejected… just because they had semi-low SATs or GPAs or whatever. anyway it es me off and i actually feel bad. but please dont go all around on this board giving out false hope******

Objective:
SAT: 2110
ACT: 30
GPA: 3.86
Class Rank: My school is not into that, but if i had to
guess it’d be top 5 percent
AP: all 4s
Course load: double science (AP chemistry and honors physics), AP calculus bc, drawing 1, theology, honors Latin iv, college composition

Subjective:
Essays: well written, well edited
Interview: went along nicely
Extracurriculars: too many to name. main ones: cross countrystate runner, track state runner, tons of service (my school is jesuit so it’s kind of expected), yearbook, teaching myself c++, snowboarding
Rec: solid from teachers who know me well

weaknesses: white male with so so GPA and test scores. misspelt opportunity accidently on suppelemental essay (may have hurt me)
strengths: my sister teaches here, I do more than just school, above average xc skills, essays were bomb

Thanks guys. I think they denied me because the 3 kids my school has sent to Brown have been kids with amazing credentials and were super super geniuses. I mean unbelievable geniuses. That probably made me look very inferior even coming from an extremely competitive private school. I don’t think I screwed anything up social network wise haha thanks for all of y’all’s input. (Sorry about the “y’all”)

@honeymaid thank you for being honest in your commentary too! I’m not trying to sound arrogant or cocky but I thought my app was quite appealing because I did do a wide variety of truly interesting things! Just my gpa didn’t compare because our school really kills us and the only other kid applying from my school was cum laude so comparing him to me gpa wise kicked me out. Everything happens for a reason and I guess Brown just isn’t the place for me

@honeymaid “may I please note that i think it’s completeeee that brown reviews apps “holistically”. You have got to be kidding me.
I’m not sure if that last part is true. I don’t mean to sound like a jerk, but I had a 4.0 UW (4.4 W) at a really competitive prep school with APs & honors, a 34 on the ACT, and academic awards (plus lots of extra-curriculars, volunteer activites, and leadership) and I was deferred and I am pretty sure it had to do with my essays not having enough impact
