**Other
Texas, white male, upper middle income, all male Catholic high school

Hooks:Legacy; mother very active in local alumni club and interviewing

Reflection[list]

Strengths: Legacy; Math/science grades; Reccs.

School only had two juniors in calculus last year, and I was one of them;

Duration and achievement in athletics—very close to but just shy of being recruited

Weaknesses: CR score; not much on resume besides athletics

Why you think you were accepted: Legacy is huge—last year Brown admitted 35% of legacies vs. 9% overall. Being an engineer from Houston may have helped; Ruth is from Houston and committed to significant expansion of engineering at Brown

Decision: Deferred

[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred: I couldn’t muster myself to apply anywhere else until I heard back from Brown, so I have a ton of apps to finish. Wheeeeee.[/ul]
[/li]

General Comments:
Brown is a super long shot for me. I wasn’t allowed to do EC’s freshman and sophomore year so all my EC’s are from junior year on. And my standardized testing scores are terribly abysmal. To not be straight out rejected… It’s kind of overwhelming to know that all my hard work during junior year at least got me this far! Congrats to all the accepted EDer’s! And best of luck to all those who were deferred! ((:

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred: interview wasnt that great, nothing to really make me stand out ?
[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred:[/ul][/li]**General Comments: brown has only accepted 1 person from my school in the past 5ish years, and the girl accepted is much smarter than me (grade-wise AND extra curriculars). **

After looking at these posts I have determined that SAT/ACT scores are, in my opinion, the most important factor in ED admissions.

I guess Brown wants to nab all the high scores because the people with those scores in the RD round may not attend, if accepted.

Congratulations to all the people who made it in, I know that you will be happy!

And to those who did not, do not lose hope for future success.

That’s why I got deferred, right?..

It looks like the average accepted SAT/ACT is around 2300 and 34-35. In addition it looks like legacy applicants did pretty well.

[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred: I didn’t apply to anywhere else[/ul][/li]**General Comments:
**
Here is what I can offer:
Test scores are NOT the most important thing

I had no advice or help from parents, counselors, advisors… no one. In fact, my counselor told me she had no time for me (to fill out common app forms). I think that it is better to follow what you believe, and I think that Brown values that trait - not being afraid to be different. So many people see a 2100+ SAT and say you NEED to boost your test scores up, etc. And they forget about other factors of the admissions process, such as the interest in going and personal qualities (very important factors). Yes, you can’t hide it if your test scores are below the average, but you have to realize that it’s only one part of the application. And if your test scores are below after taking the SAT a few or more times, then you have to realize that you need to work on more important things (essays, for example). I started on my essays in July (Personal essay for common app) and I worked on them intermittently until October. I’m a poet, so it’s a little hard for me to be concise, unbiased, unphilosophical, etc., and I wasn’t taught english until I was about 6 (still born and raised in California). But I was able to show that I was very interested in going to Brown through my essays. I had low SAT scores and I did not have perfect grades throughout highschool or middleschool (they were on my transcript) and I was driven to show everyone that it IS possible to get in without the most fantastic test scores. I really hope I can inspire people…

[li] Where else were you accepted/deferred:[/ul]None yet actually! Haven’t even found out about my state school…guess I don’t have to now![/li]General Comments:

yo, everyone who’s been deferred (that includes me) don’t get down on yourself, it’s a lot better than being straight up rejected. Looking at all the posts on here, I really don’t see a trend of credentials for Accepted or Deferred, it’s probably just that they wanted to start shaping the class. Just think of the stats: we were good enough to not get rejected, you have to imagine that that’s gonna give us an advantage when it comes to them reading RD apps. If you’re feeling bad cuz you haven’t done any other applications, though, then that’s your fault, you shouldn’t have been riding on getting accepted. Basically, don’t get down! Have a good winter, and good luck when they start reading RD

p.s. for general comments I agree with a lot of the posts already on here: never let anybody tell you you’re not good enough to even apply to a school! Luckily, I had some great mentors to guide me through the process, but I know it can be tough!

I had no mentors through this process; I just worked really hard, followed my interests, and presented myself as truthfully as I could, but it seems to have gotten me nowhere…

don’t give up hope!

Some people were asking for the acceptance letter…
