Official Class of 2014 Pitt Decisions Thread

Applicannot,

My guaranteed admission came about a week or two after my acceptance, so you still have time. The strangest thing is, I never mentioned once I was interested in international affairs on my app since Pitt has no undergrad major in international affairs. The only place I can think that they got this information is from an interview at a college interview day at my school.

For the international affairs graduate program, it can be a major you indicated on your application.

After emailing OAFA, it appears that Pitt may have a different scholarship review process this year. Apparently, my application is set to be reviewed in early December for scholarships, despite the fact that I applied in May. Just wanted to put this out there… in case there’s anyone else who is still waiting for a letter and hasn’t received one. Maybe they’re evaluating them by region or state? It doesn’t seem like anyone from MA has gotten one yet. Any theories on this?

I received the Graduate International Affairs thing while having undecided as my major. However, I did write about a foreign country in my essay, so that might have been the cause.

I wonder if they are putting off deciding on some applications to keep their options open. In the past, they have given out the majority of scholarships to early applicants and then later ones got nothing.

MTnest that’s what I was thinking too… it seems as though they may have assigned random “review” days for a number of early applicants in hopes of leaving some money for the later applicants. It definitely makes sense… and judging from last year’s board… there seemed to be plenty of angry applicants and parents who probably complained about the way scholarships were all handed out early in the process. Idk… just a thought…

My college counselor said she would email the head of admissions and financial aid in hopes of finding out their process for this year. I’ll let you know if I hear anything more.

I agree about the fact that in the past, it seemed that all of the scholarship money was given out early and good applicants who applied later got nothing. Still, Pitt is a “rolling admissions” school so I guess that getting no money is a risk you take with a later application.

But Pinknpreppy applied SUPER early and has great stats. She actually appears to be one of the first ones to have applied. Sometimes it just makes no logical sense. I hope you hear soon PnP. It is very hard to wait and wonder.

Thanks saf! I hope so too. It’s nice to know that I still have a shot at getting one though. I was getting pretty nervous thinking that I just wasn’t going to get a letter at all, or even worse, that the letter had gotten lost in the mail. It definitely made it hard to study for term exams thinking that my letter could have been dropped behind a desk at the post office or delivered to the wrong house :(

I hope your college counselor can ferret out some more info! This is definitely a strange situation.

Not to resurrect the general confusion of previous years, but I called OAFA today and asked about the financial aid process. On this particular occasion, the particular person I spoke to told me that Pitt would be having a large aid evaluation at the beginning of 2010 and specifically that both need-based and merit-based money would be awarded at that time. I explained to the FA representative that my daughter had already received some merit aid awards from other colleges and I wondered if any award would be forthcoming from Pitt. She repeated to me that Pitt’s schedule included some February date. Hmmm. But who knows, if you call tomorrow you might get a different answer. Sigh. I just really don’t understand how they do it.

I’m really sorry to hear that but if it makes you feel better I haven’t heard of anyone getting scholarships at my school before December for the past two years.

It seems like December will be when I hear back too. The person in OAFA that both my mom and I have been emailing has been really helpful so far. He told my mom that if I don’t hear back by the middle of December, she could email him to find out what the status of my file is. I definitely expected to get the typical “run around” from them.

Son submitted application online and ordered transcript and ACT/SAT scores about 10 days ago. Is there a way to check status online? Thanks.
