Most of my friends were deferred from OSU with about a 25-26 ACT and 3.5-3.7 weighted GPA, but as these are common stats, I believe it comes down to extracurriculars, the rigor of your classes, and the essay.

Tfro93 the ones stressing are the ones with the same stats or better and are deferred. Caucasion male who goes to a high school that US News and World Reports ranks superior. You would think a state college would quickly make a decision about a student who has been educated at an institution with a rigorous classical education with a highly competive student body and being the top school in the state. 5 AP’s, 6 honors. 3.375 UW 3.7 W. . ENG Lang and Comp “5”
27 ACT comp. 29 English ACT. Leadership ect. If selection was made fairly and if criteria was the same for everyone…well then fair would be fair. Don’t ask why people are stressing Tfro93 (as if there is no reason to be displeased with not being evaluated fairly.) It seems it is necessary to remember that all men are created equal.

Bee4me, re deferral-- All men may be created equal but all men do not have equal opportunities and someone without all of the advantages may have better long-term prospects in OSU’s view.

It’s important to realize that Ohio State has maintained an admirable commitment to socio-economic diversity in its classes, which is something that far too many selective public universities have lost sight of. Despite its selectivity, approximately 20% of incoming freshman classes are still first generation college students.

I would ask who is the more impressive candidate and who best represents the mission of public higher education?

A kid with a 29 ACT from a top-notch public or private high school, a comfortable economic environment (with all the tutors and test prep classes that entails) and whose parents and grandparents are all college graduates.

OR

A kid with a 28 ACT who is a first generation college student from a blue collar background and a mediocre high school who rose above the limitations of his background and learning environment.

Besides, Ohio already has a public university that thinks it’s a private prep school where everybody is white, suburban and whose parents are college graduates. We don’t need to take Ohio State down that path.

^That major chip on your shoulder isn’t any more attractive than it was last year. S is trying to decide between the two. This attitude continues to make the other more attractive…doesn’t matter to the parents…we have had great experiences at the other!

Funny. I’m posting this in an Ohio State forum and never venture onto the Miami of Ohio forum. You–who clearly favors Miami of Ohio over Ohio State–feels the need to repeatedly trumpet your preferences on the Ohio State forum. Yet, I am the one with the chip on my soldier.

As for Miami of Ohio’s lack of diversity, be serious. It’s not just me. Any college guide out there mentions it, and Miami of Ohio is a perennial choice for Princeton Review’s list of the least diverse campuses in America. I have no desire to see Ohio State go down that path and am quite proud to trumpet the fact that they’ve maintained an admirable level of socio-economic diversity in their freshman classes while still far surpassing Miami of Ohio by any admissions criteria one chooses to examine.

As for which school has a chip on its soldier, you might want to take notice of the two banner ads that Miami of Ohio pays to run 24/7 on the Ohio State forum.

Good day, sir. I said good day.

Wow, no sooner do I type this than it would appear that Miami of Ohio finally stopped running their pathetic little banner ads. I wonder if their check bounced.

@Lenny or whatever… Why do you hate miami so much? I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion but please just shut up. I got into miami and osu, and to be honest, I like miami better. Even though I prefer miami, I’m not going to go on their forum and bash osu. Do you get some kind of enjoyment out of this? It’s stupid and I’m saying what’s on everyones mind.

Good. Make the decision that’s best for you.

Don’t, however, feel that you speak for anyone on a message board other than yourself. I may not agree–or even like–some posters on here, but I don’t tell them to “shut up” or call them “stupid.”

Hopefully, you’ll grow up a little bit and develop a little thicker skin during your time in Oxford.

^LP I am on this site as my son has applied to Honors, and been accepted, at both schools. He will decide where he wants to go. I don’t come here to bash one school over another. I don’t see anyone on the other site trashing other schools.

It’s a sad situation when one feels so inadequate that he must attempt to bring another down to make himself feel worthy. Luckily, I know enough past and current students at OSU to know you do not reflect the norm.

Diversity is not merely a number in a college data set. It is about living a life of tolerance and acceptance. N.B. LennyPepper.

Lenny, I agree with you on the diversity aspect. My daughter is the 28 act, first generation from a rural ( I won’t say mediocre) but very disadvantaged school district in comparison to others in the state. I absolutely believe she has demonstrated being able to rise above her environment and that should carry a lot of weight. She didn’t have the advantages kids from rich school districts and rich families have and I believe she should and has been rewarded for this.

She just received the Morrill scholarship for full tuition.

I am not going to comment on Miami because I don’t really know or care, but I wanted to say I think it is fabulous that colleges reward kids who had to rise above stereotypes and beat expectations.

hello,
I am an international student who had applied to the college of engineering at OSU. I got in and on receiving a packet a few days later i was informed i had got a 5000$ annual scholarship and a brochure encouraging me to apply for the H&S program.

Being an international student i do not have much knowledge about OSU or its reputation,is the college good? how is the college’s reputation?
At the moment i feel Penn States the best of the colleges i have received offers from.IS OSU BETTER?

Danesh, I am biased but I believe Ohio State is better. Penn State has a huge scandel right now and a former football coach is on trial for sexually abusing children. I am not saying it is a bad school because of this sick person but I wouldn’t send my daughter there in the coming years because of this reputation. Saying that,Penn state is a very good school but so is Ohio State.

If you have received better aid to Penn state then I would understand your desire to attend there. However, if the price for either school is about the same, come to Ohio State

At Ohio State you will be in the capitol of Ohio, and a very large city…lots to see and do.

Good luck with your choice.

Danesh,
I assume you are asking about the OSU and PennU main campuses. My son considered Penn State, but not for engineering. He decided not to apply because Penn didn’t have as strong a reputation in his degree. But we did look into the school, so here are some thoughts.

From an engineering program perspective, the two are about equal. See the the link below. http://www.cefns.nau.edu/Academic/CS/misc_docs/UG_engineering_ranking_08.pdf.
There may be a difference in terms of engineering specialization.

Both schools have good reputations, but Penn States overall reputation is probably better. I assume you aren’t that interested in American football, so the scandel at Penn statue probably won’t have an impact on you.

However, the schools are are sufficiently similar that you may want to look at some softer differences. For example, OSU has a very active diversity office and the university actively works to ensure non-standard students, including international students, are supported. I believe it exceeds PennU in this regard.

The two schools physically pretty close, about 350 miles. But OSU has a Midwest culture, meaning the people are a little more friendly. Penn State has more of an eastern culture.

You didnt say where you are from. Depending on your personality and your native culture, you may find OSU more warm, friendly and inviting or more intrusive and confusing than Penn U.

MSPearl is right. OSU is in a nice size town, so there will be more to do than in Penn State. Columbus (OSU) has a class B airport. University Park has a class C airport. I don’t know how much you plan on traveling, but that means flights in and out of Columbus will be more plentiful, maybe fewer connections, and probably a little cheaper.

You might consider looking at school clubs to see which is more interesting. OSU has 2x the number of clubs as Penn State.

Sorry, but I think this is one of those situations where you have to decide which school is better for you than which is has a better reputation.

Good luck

Deferred than admitted
