My GPA would be much higher except I was under a lot of stress my freshman year and I had a couple C’s. Now I have straight A’s in all my classes and I’m hoping they take that into consideration. (My father was an abusive drunk and my family was drowning in debt until we had to declare bankruptcy, and I was removed from my home and placed in Child Protective Services after my father attacked me for defending my sister.)

Does anyone know if choosing “Exploring” could have hurt my chances?

The incredibly frustrating part about being deferred is watching all the kids you’ve tutored get accepted while your still in deferment. Still holding onto hope though.

@ weylyn, i cant speak to exploring hurting your chances but try and hold out some hope…in my honest opinion youll get in if you wait this out, good luck

@Weylyn, I don’t think applying as an exploration hurt your chances. I was a deferred exploration who later got accepted so there’s still hope! You’re stats are competitive imo and I think its only a matter of time before you get in. Good luck!

My girl is mailing her acceptance letter and $100 fee today! She is over the moon Excited and I am happy that she is happy! Such a great feeling!

I talked to an admission counselor today and asked if which program you choose could effect the decision. I was told that they don’t even look at which program you signed up for until after your admitted and that if the applicant doesn’t have the requirements to get into the program they would have to take prerequisite courses to prepare for the actual program. So exploration didn’t hurt my chances.

He told me that its going to come down to the competitiveness of the applicants and the my updated transcript which I have straight A’s in my AP courses and Post secondary classes. My concern is that the Fafsa funds will be run dry by the time I am hopefully admitted. I come from a low income family and my sister is already in college so I was hoping to get some cash from Fafsa and participate in the NROTC program to subsidize the loans I will undoubtedly have to take out.

i wouldnt think the grants would run out in mid feb…

@UofIENG It happen to my sister when she got into the University of Oklahoma, besides I may not get accepted till late march, and I don’t exactly have top priority now when its on a first come, first served basis.

Decision: Admitted

Applied right at the 2/1 Deadline! Received acceptance later today. Unexpected considering 3 weeks is a whole heck of a lot less than 10-12

Unless I receive the National Buckeye Scholarship, however, (and maybe some others?) I’ll be most likely looking elsewhere, like in-state, WVU.

Congrats, Comet! Your stats?

Accepted
ACT 31
GPA 3.8
OOS

It funny as I read these admissions statements, more than a few alumni of the Ohio State University would never even be given consideration now that the standards have increase so much, so you have to commend the Administration from making the school be more than the back-up of all back-up state schools to the Crown Jewel of public Ohio state colleges and universities-----barring Miami University of course

schoolhouse…it seems so many of the state universities have really stepped up their acceptance rates in the past 2-3 years especially. We are OOS and my S has been accepted to both OSU (Fisher) and Miami U (Farmer), so I find your comment about the Crown Jewel of the public schools in the state of Ohio interesting! We will be visiting both schools again in 2 weeks to make a final decision (2 other schools are under consideration as well). What is the in state “scoop” between OSU and Miami for possible business majors?

Thanks!

Nova, I have heard excellent reviews of Farmers at Miami. My D was accepted to Miami and when we visited last summer she loved it. The campus is gorgeous! Like a movie set. Lol.

The problem she has is that it is a little less diverse than OSU and she did not like the surrounding area. (Southwestern Ohio.) But, had Ohio State not given my D a full tuition scholarship, Miami would be a serious contender. I am not sure what to tell you. They are both great schools. It might come down to atmosphere for your son. Miami has the stereotype of rich white kids, more conservative etc… Don’t know if that is true but that is the consensus. Osu is overall more respected by the general public but that probably has a lot to do with sports!

I think Osu would have a lot of opportunities for business due to being in Columbus, but Miami is close to Cincinnati . I think either one you choose will work out. But Ohio definitely has the best sports! And spirit!!

Mspearl, thanks. I think we exchanged posts many months ago when our kids applied. Congrats to your D on her scholarship, how awesome is that?!
I agree, it may come down to my son’s comfort level on either campus. We loved Miami’s campus, it is picture perfect. He loved the vibe and action in Columbus when we drove through on a quiet Sunday in August (OSU was not even in session yet). He does want to do internships too, so each school’s ability to provide that opportunity will also have an impact I think. So, back we go to view them both in session and meet with the business schools…
I just pray the answer is clear, I want him to love his pick, whatever it may be!! I will keep you posted after our visits.

My son had the same dilemma last year and now it’s my daughter. Neither are business majors. My son decided on OSU and loves it. He is enthusiastic about his courses and has made some good friends. There is a lot of activity and huge school spirit. I like the fact that staff and students make an effort to make the campus, huge as it is, seem personal and small. There is a niche for everyone. I know kids at Miami’s business school who are doing very well with internships and graduates who are working in Chicago.

I agree it is amazing how OSU’s reputation has improved since I was in college(at UD). Truly if you had a pulse back in the day you were admitted.

The two schools are so different that it may be obvious to your son which is best. When we visited Miami my son also felt diversity was lacking and the surrounding area did not provide much to do. It is a gorgeous campus and has always had a great academic reputation. I think my daughter is leaning toward OSU but we are visiting both with an open mind. Her brother’s enthusiasm is hard to ignore!
