*Official Class of 2016 University of Michigan EA Decisions Thread*

Yeah that was just my school, but we have had a ton of kids apply to UM fwiw. The graphs do only take into account time since 2004. Also, how did that formula consider W vs UW GPA, and what is generally a good score?

So when do we find out?

Hey guys, I have seen all the speculations, but do we at least know that we will be notified this week or is there a possibility that we will only be notified next week?

Dantheman, back in those days, Michigan recalculated all GPAs.

We have a ton of really intelligent people on this forum. I am confident if we all put our heads together we can figure out how to find out when we will hear our decisions…

I called them, and they said, “We haven’t heard anything that would let us know otherwise” (whether decisions will be released on the 23rd)

@bbrower I dunno…lots of different things being said, and some say that they’ve talked to admissions… All we can do is hope that it’s this week (or next week, if you prefer to wait; I, for one, cannot stand the wait more than one more week!!)

@msinan so, for now, we should assume the worst–Dec 23? Fudge nuggets, that’s too long!!!

they def. won’t be released on the 23rd. the 22nd would be possible, but it won’t be on the 23rd. They need to account for possible errors or a server crash and therefore couldn’t wait until the last minute. Not to mention, they don’t want to have to come into work on the 23rd and admissions always makes itself available at least a day after they send results to answer phone calls from applicants addressing possible concerns. So I’d say the last date we should hear from them, logically, would be December 21st. Which is still way too long in my opinion!!!

All admissions offices are known for not telling students the real date because they don’t want to be answering annoying phone calls. Technically, none of us should call until after the 23rd or when decisions come out.

to keep ourselves busy we could bet on the date???

I guess Tuesday, December 20th for the decision.

And the get ready email on Thursday the 15th.

I’m gonna go with - 1st email (get ready) notice on Thursday the 15th. Formal Accept/Reject/Defer notice on Monday the 19th (end of the day).

Ted Spencer is one of the readers for my school, and when he came and spoke with us he said he reads essays and letters of rec before he even looks at transcripts. Grades and test scores are obviously important, but Michigan takes a largely holistic approach when reading applications. I would argue that essays are just as important as grades and scores.

i spoke to my friend in Michigan and she said that people have already gotten decision letters…im just gonna confirm whether that was like all the athletes or not

why did i think we were receiving decisions this Thursday, dec 15th?

Essays will heal the sick but they don’t raise the dead. I agree with Alexandre that you need to have a very high unweighted GPA for a school like Michigan. For reference, I had a 35 ACT and 3.8x GPA and still didn’t get the Regents Scholarship at UMich but got accepted to Chicago, Duke, Cornell and Columbia. If I had a 4.0 unweighted for instance, I might have been considered for the Shipman Scholarship (prestigious full ride award) but having a GPA of 0.1x less than that knocked me out of contention for any merit money whatsoever though I did get into the Honors Program.

I would say that the only portions of Michigan admissions that are truly holistic like a private school is Ross and if you want to be considered for the merit awards but admittedly that is anecdotal.

@flying tomato - there was a thought about that going around before…

but we don’t know until they decide to send them out :stuck_out_tongue: did people get the whole “you’ll be getting you decision on blah blah blah” email last year?

@goldenboy8784 I agree w/ u. My cousin told me that she thought her essays was what got her into Michigan. And since I know she is a really good writer, I wouldn’t doubt it that her essays were the reason she got in. Of course graduated in 2002 so idk if it still applies. I think essays matter especially for an applicant who is borderline, then their essays will be the deciding factor. Michigan is a school that has rejected and differed people with amazing stats so you just never know if your borderline or not.

Does everyone who’s here college career hinge on a Michigan acceptance? I really didn’t think Michigan was that hard to get into, until I started reading some of these stats. Before CC, Michigan was more of a “middle stretch” than a “reach” (if that makes sense). And mostly because I’m OOS and don’t think the FA is going to measure up to some other offers.

The only other school I did EA at was ND (decision should be out this week as well). ND and NU are my “reaches” and UM and UW-Madison are my “middle stretch/reliable” choices. I also applied (and have been accepted) at a couple of very highly regarded regional Universities nearby that do rolling admissions. So no matter what? I’ll feel good about where I end up.

Oh! And I did one “super reach” (BROWN). Cause I wanted an Ivy rejection letter to hang on my future office wall :D

Umich’s acceptance rate right now is 51%. I am pretty sure it was 50% last year, yet their average GPA is 3.8 and their ACT range is 29-33 this year. I’m not sure how these stats add up since not everyone who applies can have around a 3.8 right? I just don’t see how it fits

@Rasheeds I think admit rate last year dropped to around 38% and it’s supposed to go down to 30-32% this year.
