dmc,

This happens every year. There are some applicants whose stats are so strong that they’re likely admits at a lot of other outstanding colleges and universities. And frankly, they probably have a yield model that predicts that applicants from “very strong” independent day schools in New England with 2370 SATs who are varsity athletes in 3 sports, all-conference and all-region in any sport, and state champions in the Science Olympiad are not likely to enroll at Michigan if admitted, because others similarly situated have not done so in the past. Especially if your essays aren’t screaming “I love the University of Michigan and it’s always been my dream to be a Wolverine!” And my guess is, they weren’t.

So they took a pass on you, figuring you’ll do just fine elsewhere (which you will), and they don’t need to admit you which would just depress their yield and inflate their acceptance rate.

They really don’t like to be used as a safety. Even if that wasn’t your intent, that’s probably how they read it.

I blame the out-of-state kids.

I not only visited the campus, but I STAYED there for a week, and met with all the counselors, EVERYONE who I possibly could, and i’m not even FROM michigan, im from texas, and i went across the WHOLE fuc king country just so i could start to reach out to the university. my stats are not bad at all, i’ve done several chance threads on various sites, and people have said i have a pretty good shot. michigan is the ONLY thing that kept me motivated in school for the past SEVERAL years. my room is filled with michigan posters. i have michigan waterbottles, keychains, and 75% of my wardrobe is michigan stuff. i watch the football games every single weekend even though im nowhere NEAR ann arbor. my essays defienitely show interest.

and i get deferred. i’ve never felt so let down in my life.
