Official Class of 2021 Northeastern University Early Decision/Early Action Discussion

@mayc16 Asking what you can do to an admissions officer would not be a good idea in my opinion. I would suggest submitting a supplementary essay that would show your interest in experiential learning and global opportunities, emphasizing how you would benefit from them Those are the major themes at Northeastern.

Thank You @TomSrOfBoston! I also registered for SAT subject tests in January, but Northeastern has a due date of February 15th? I don’t know if they will accept them if they are a little late.

@mayc16

NEU does not look at Subject Tests apparently, so it won’t matter either way there.

@TomSrOfBoston Do you happen to know when EA applicants typically receive their need-based FA packages?

@quoderatuhhh Need based financial aid is awarded at time of EA acceptance if both the CSS and FAFSA were submitted along with any requested supporting documents. You need to call the financial aid office now!

@TomSrOfBoston
On the phone with them now… looks like they never processed my tax returns as submitted even though my mother sent them in on the day of the deadline. Sigh. They’re insisting we don’t get need-based packages anyway until two weeks from now.
FA guys says need-based packages sometimes come with acceptance and sometimes later (in case anyone has the same question and sent in all their FA stuff)

@TomSrOfBoston Just curious to know. Did CSS and FAFSA need to be completed for the merit scholarship?

@oldtown348 - No. I received 15k a year merit without submitting FAFSA.

@oldtown348 According to the Northeastern website:
“Students are not required to complete the financial aid applications to be considered for a merit-based scholarship.”

@TomSrOfBoston or really anyone, I got deferred ED (College of Engineering). I know someone probably has mentioned this but I really do not feel like browsing through threads, what are some ways to boost NEU application? You mentioned that you can submit a supplement, but Northeastern does not offer any prompt. Any suggestions on how to boost application?

@tropicalgod I have never seen the applicant portal but according to other posters there was an option to submit a supplement. It is not on the Common App. I am not sure if you can update the application once submitted. Others here may be more familiar with this.

@TomSrOfBoston You can update the application once submitted on the status page. You can upload documents, however, I did not know that writing a full fledged supplement essay of a topic would boost chance in admission. I thought it was mainly for accomplishments, or CV’s and such.

Since Northeastern does not have a supplemental question on the Common App, it won’t hurt.

@TomSrOfBoston Hi Tom, I was deferred EA and was wondering when should I hear back from regular decisions? I was also wondering if I should travel to Boston and visit northeastern to show my interest? Is legacy a hook for RD? So many questions, Sorry!!

In the past RD decisions have come out in mid-March. Legacy is not considered according to the Common Data Set. If the trip is not cross country or a financial burden a visit would be good especially if you have not visited campus before.

@TomSrOfBoston should I schedule a meeting with my admission officer even though I already interviewed with him in my state?

Oh, you didn’t mention that. If possible yes but I am not sure if on campus interviews are offered. If you legacy parent has not seen Northeastern in recent years s/he will be quite surprised.

has someone made a group me for the accepted students?

@nervoussss12 I don’t think so, but if you are going to, I’ll be happy to join!

I am in a GroupMe for the accepted students.
