Official Columbia Early Decision Class of 2015 Results-ONLY STATS

^^^I think he meant stellar for Ivy Leagues, and not state colleges lol.

Plus, scores are the most easily fluctuated. People take the SAT while sick, stressed, or otherwise. A “less than stellar” score doesn’t mean much. I feel blessed to be accepted to Columbia (obviously) but I’d like to think Columbia saw past my 1970 score and saw someone who had a story to tell and worked very hard to get where I am in life.

Scores are just a numbers game.

^^^ you give me hope ColumbiaDiva (i was deferred)

Can someone post the acceptance letter?

hey guys,
i know this is the wrong thread, but I wanted to see what had happened at the other schools too lol
i was deferred at cornell with a 1920 sat, 29 act, 610 bio, 580 math II (yes I know I can’t test well) but talked to a lot of other people who were rejected with 2350+ scores and 800 subject tests so it’s not all about the scores. I’m a white kid from jersey with no hooks, but I have some decent Ecs and a lot of leadership positions. I was wondering if anyone has any good advice on getting off the waitlist, as I assume it’s the same thing for Cornell and Columbia to get off. I’m going to call admissions tomorrow to see if I can boost anything. Any advice would be great, and now I get to apply to Penn :)

Yeah I mean a 2400 valedictorian who write a crap essay and whose teacher recs say “quiet kid, never contributes to classroom discussions” will offer no stimulation and really will not contribute in any signifcant way. A kid with 2250 who stays up all night doing extra research just for the heck of it and is a force to be reckoned with in classroom discussions shows more passion, vitality, and will have much more impact. :D

comments:
worst day of my life. i still tear up when i hear columbia. i just cant believe im not going here.

the interview is unfortunately only one part of the app. But honestly, I would look forward to other colleges and making the most of them, you never know - you might enjoy them and reap greater benefit from another place than you would Columbia. Columbia has it’s flaws like every college does, its not worth getting so worked up about it. Columbia wasn’t my first choice when I applied, but it worked out in the end, and became a place I loved, most people have the same experience when they end up at College X or Y, reality can often differ from your and others’ perspective.

Finally if all fails and if you hate the school you ultimately attend and still really want Columbia, you can always apply to transfer. But good luck on those other apps, and enjoy the second half of senior year - it’s usually a good time.

**Decision: ACCEPTED -SEAS **

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: Composite-2270, Critical Reading-760, Math-790, Writing-720
[] ACT: Composite-35, English-35, Math-36, Reading-34, Science-36, Combined Writing/English-31
[] SAT IIs: 800-Math 2, 750-Chem, 710-US History, 710-World History
[] GPA: 4.0
[] Rank: 5/1047
[] Other: I have taken a ridiculous number of APs, and everything else is either Honors or Gifted. the exception would be minors and Intro to Engineering, which I took because I wanted to take 6 APs this year and they couldn’t schedule all 6 of them without taking away lunch and so I had an extra period which I use for that class. I’ve taken AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP English Language, AP US History, AP World History, AP Statistics and I am taking AP Calculus BC, AP Physics, AP Government, AP English Literature, AP Spanish, AP Psychology. So far, I’ve gotten 4 5’s and 2 4’s, which makes me that National AP Scholar thing. I’m also a National Merit Semifinalist. But I forgot to put both of them on my application… but it might have been on my transcript.

[/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I wrote about 9/11 and being a Muslim for the Common App essay. I was afraid to use it because I didn’t want to exploit the event, but I did see it happen from my second grade window. So I described that, but I tried to make it more about me and the issues I face with dealing with my religion. The other ones were crap, written once with no revisions. Nothing was written well or very stylistically. However, I did try to convey how much I really love Columbia in the one short answer.
[] ECs: NHS, Indian Cultural Club, Bengali Cultural Club, Key Club, Bollywood Dance, Design Jewelry, Reading Olympics, Girl Scouts, Tutor, Volunteer at Nursing Home
[] Teacher Recs: One of them was from my favorite teacher who has admitted I am her favorite student. The other doesn’t exactly like me too much but I know he writes pages.
[] Counselor Rec: It’s a big school. She barely knows me.
[li] Hook (if any): The two things going for me were culture and volunteer. I had no leadership. I put a lot of New York into my essays because I used to live there. I also love Columbia and I’ve been there so many times and I worked hard on that short answer putting in so many details that I’ve learned on campus and stuff.
[/li]

General Comments:
So before I was really doubting how I got in, but typing all this up has given me a little more confidence in me and my acceptance. I still think there were so many people that deserved it more than I did. Two guys that got into Cornell and I are the only people that got into Ivy League from our school. Even our valedictorian was rejected. So it’s kind of a big deal. Also, since there has been discussion on financial aid, tuition plus room and board is more than what my parents make a year. I hear Columbia is pretty generous; I don’t think they deserve to be accused of caring about money.

Wow, congratulations proggostickkk! I’m Bangladeshi as well, and my main hook is culture too. Nice to see the Bengalis spreading around the IV Leagues :)

General Comments: Showed a general upward trend in grades. Progressed from a 4.1 freshman year, 4.3 sophomore year, and a 4.8 junior year (weighted). My rank jumped from 35 sophomore year to 19. The jump in GPA was largely attributed to me taking higher level courses (weighted 1 point higher) that were unavailable to me during my freshman and sophomore years.
