Counselor Rec: ? God knows
Hook: Gay?
State: NY
School type: small, rural, nothing special to be honest
Ethnicity: White
Gender: male

Other Factors: I think I got in because of a program called Teen Insitute. Google it, it’s worth it.

Hey guys, I’m only an outsider looking in…but from my observations, many non-urm’s get accepted to SEAS with really good stats, it might be a general trend that race and extracurriculars, connections, etc. do not play a huge role in SEAS admissions. This does not in any way depreciate SEAS in any way though, because IT IS after all part of COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, and the students there are equally demanded by wall street and a lot of big firms. SO…I would advise(maybe just suggest) future applicants who are not URMs to apply to SEAS if you haven’t cured cancer and you are still a competent applicant in all other ways.
Btw, I’m a junior planning to apply to SEAS next year, I haven’t cured cancer, so I won’t apply to Columbia College.

[] AP: 5 English Lang and Comp, 4 APUSH, 3 Chemistry
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I got my English teachers and boss (who majored in English) to read my common app essay and they all said it was powerful and well written. Supplements talked about neuroscience at Columbia.
[] ECs: Varsity XC, XC captain, co-captain of track team, assistant stage manager, editor of lit mag, and president of outdoor club
[] Teacher Recs: Didn’t read them, but probably pretty good. They’ve both known me for a while and I talk to them a lot.
[] Counselor Rec: Not sure, but probably pretty good as well. She knows that I work hard and that I’m passionate about learning.
[] Interview: went really well
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NJ
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Chinese, did not submit
[] Gender: F
[/ul]Other Factors: It was really stupid of me, but I didn’t check to see if my score reports actually went through. By the time I did and realized they hadn’t, it was a bit too late. I’m assuming they never received them. General Comments: I’m not surprised. I made a careless mistake and I regret it…but I’m also hoping that my rejection was for the best. Congratulations to all of those who got accepted!!! And to those who got rejected, there are other fantastic schools out there. Don’t be too down. I’m sure you’ll be happy wherever you wind up going :)

[] State or Country: PA, but applied internationally from an East Asian country
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender:F
[/ul]Other Factors: General Comments: Not to be weird or anything, but I really think I’m a good fit for Columbia and I think they saw that. I had no mindblowing awards and I’m not a freak of nature genius, but I tried to come across as normal and relatable on my app. Maybe they dug that I put Dirty Dancing 2 as my favorite film or that I didn’t attempt to sound pseudo-intellectual.

Anyway, if you guys didn’t get into Columbia, it’s not because you weren’t smart enough or good enough or didn’t do something right. It’s simply because it just wasn’t the right school for you.

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NY
[] School Type: Small public, pretty bad.
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Other Factors: None really. General Comments: i didn’t expect much, i thought likely rejection or deferral, but i didn’t anticipate that the experience of being deferred would be quite this frustrating and generally suffocating. i imagine the disappointment will wear off, but especially this year, with regular decision application volume expected to skyrocket, i know that i stand very very little chance of getting accepted. ah well.

a few very broad questions (i might also post a separate thread containing these questions, i imagine a lot of deferred students have them): what is typically expected of/advisable for deferred candidates? a love letter to columbia? a declaration of continued interest? also, if i accidentally left off a few ECs from my original application, should i e-mail them? if i take another subject test, should i sent them the results? should i send them a transcript from my math class? (i did pretty well.) thanks for all your (the college confidential community’s) continued help.

[] State or Country: New York, NY
[] School Type: Best in New York (Stuyvesant)

[/ul]Other Factors: I did my research for Intel in a Columbia professor’s laboratory, I have two published papers with him. General Comments: I wasn’t really worried about getting in, just about the I.I. Rabi scholarship, which I why I want to go to Columbia over any other school.
