Official Columbia University Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could chance me

Major: Political Science

ACT:35
SAT II: USH 800, WH 800, Chemistry 770, Math I 770
APs: 5’s on all 6 AP Exams

GPA: 4.0 - 20 credits taken from a highly ranked state university
Recs: should be good
Essays: I honesty feel like I wrote incredible essays. I will not be applying to any other schools so I tailored my personal statement to reflect some of the reasons why I want to be at Columbia.
EC’s: I am involved in a lot of student organizations on campus, hold a job, and am volunteering at a foodbank when I can.

High School (Here is the kicker…)
GPA: 3.55 - at a competitive public High School, huge upward trend averaged a 3.875 my last two years
Rank: I believe it was top 30%
I was really involved during High School and I believe I had solid EC’s. I was the president of two clubs, volunteered, went to Boys’ State, held a job, and had a few more activities. I am also a trilingual immigrant if that helps…doubt it though haha

Thank you guys so much, I hope we all get in!

So what do you guys think, do I have a shot at transferring this Fall?

Hey I am also a transfer applicant. your stats are a lot better than mine and I think you have a very solid chance. but I think in the end, 99% applicants have as good stats as you do, and competitive schools like columbia can afford to value your personal quality rather than stats. that being said, the three short answers are probably the key. if you think you successfully conveyed them how thoughtful you are, you should be fine!

I find this waiting process harder than the application process to be honest…

^ I feel you. I am taking one less course and feeling more stressed than last term.

I agree man. this term has been intense.

Has no one else gotten their decision yet? I actually received mine about three weeks ago and nobody else I’ve talked to seems to know yet. Is this normal? I thought it was supposed to be mid-May…

oh wow that really is early! did you apply to columbia college or?

yes, and i got some good news! i thought they were playing a joke on me when the offer came in … especially because it came in like a month and a half early haha

congratulations! you must be a super qualified applicant haha whats your major?

hardly, but thanks a lot! (: i’m film studies and econ/polisci.

Nice!! are you a rising sophomore or junior?

rising sophomore. though i did try applying to columbia last year, which didn’t work out quite as well …

Wow congratulations @kilocopter!! I still got no news… applied to Engineering as a rising Junior. Do you know anyone else who already got their decision back?

aw, thank you! but yeah, i don’t know anyone who has gotten their decisions back yet … that’s why i thought i’d check around here, but apparently i’m still the only one, haha.

Hey guys, the wait has been killing me ever since I finished the application! I’m more in the lower chance range of the applicants, I would appreciate it if you could give some feedback towards my chances!
-An international freshman student from Central Asia (attended HS in the US) currently majoring in economics in the mid 150’s nationally ranked university in NY
-College GPA: 3.925 in the first semester (took 4 classes only: 2 introductory in economics and writing, 1 intermediate in sociology and 1 advanced in polisci)
-Midterm Report: 4.0 GPA (taking 4 classes again; three introductory in economics, legal studies, and polisci and 1 advanced in economics+very nice comments from professors on the report)
-Credits: will have 33 by the end of the academic year (taking summer classes)

-TOEFL: 110/120
-Essays/Commonapp: im not a decent writer, but i put limited variety of classes in my college’s polisci department and my desire to study at the heart of NYC as the main reasons for transferring.
-HS GPA: around 3.80/4 Unweighted in a small private school
-LORs: should be decent, got it from PoliSci professor and Economics professor (who taught at Columbia SIPA before)
-College ECs: active only in 2 college clubs (MSA+freshman soccer team), internship at a city government and a national university during the winter break in my home country, also volunteered for a month at a hospital during the summer vacation in my home country

-I was rejected from Columbia last year as a HS applicant, oh and also I’m just 16 years old, skipped 3 years in middle school, not sure if that has an effect on my chances
Thanks a tonnnnn guys!!!

wow you sound like a very outstanding person. if your qualities are reflected through your essays, I think you have a solid chance!

This is one of the many reasons I really hope I’ll get into columbia. so many interesting people!!

Thanks ! I hope we are all accepted and get to meet each other on campus :))

Got my acceptance packet via Fedex 2 days ago and a call from the admissions office later that same day! I haven’t posted at all in this thread, but I have definitely been following it. I didn’t submit my application until March 17th and my transcripts didn’t arrive until April 2nd.

congrats karentheelephant! if you don’t mind me asking, what are your stats?

So you’re telling me that you submitted your application more than 2 weeks late and your materials a month late, yet not only did you get in, but you were also admitted before nearly everyone else?

Is curing cancer part of your application?

LOLOL !!!^ prolly got a Nobel Prize too :o
