seriously though…when are we actually going to hear back? I know they say no later than May 15th…can we expect to here back earlier?

haha this thread is starting to get interesting

I never thought of applying to Columbia when in high school, now I hope I won’t regret not at least trying.

My essay is what I think did it for me. I wrote about the hardships and challenges I’ve had to overcome in order to get the education I think I deserve. I’ll try to summarize it briefly. I was born in Colombia and raised in America by my single mother. My mom was basically the working-father figure and I was the mother figure for my younger siblings. From a young as I was driven to make my mom proud so I excelled in school and got a significant scholarship for a private high school education. Half way through high school I had immigration problems and almost got deported. I married my high school sweetheart during my first year at Suffolk. After graduating with my associates, I took a gap year and worked as an assistant manager at a gourmet food shop. I got my green card in January and decided to apply to Columbia soon after. I turn 21 in June, which made my story very out of the ordinary for my age.

Just got rejected from Dartmouth I think there’s a high chance of the decisions coming out hopefully next week sometime. Also for those of you who have applied for financial aid, did you guys get an email about missing documents on March 19th? Just wondering.

fistbump my respect

Now I see why you got accepted. your experience is unique and cool and tough as hell…
make me wonder if I’ve lived my life on a boat that sails too smoothly, haha

And good luck to all hopeful applicants!! I hope we get the result soon…

I called in today and the guy said that next week they’ll open up the online system again for transfers. Decisions will be posted either next week or the week after… so no one check the mail every day like I have.

It’s nice to know we’ll know our decisions within the next two weeks… Been hard to wait!

I’m applying as a Film Studies major, kinda scared about my chances because my SAT was awfully low, high school GPA was around 3.4, and my college GPA (sophomore standing) is 3.8 which is also not the best. I’m counting on ECs-- I wrote two scripts, under signed contracts, for my professor who’s not extremely famous but has done some stuff in the industry, volunteered at film festivals, and worked at the film department in my college for the past two years. Gah, I can’t wait until Columbia finally lets us know if we got in or not!

Oh hello, fellow film studies major! Yeah I totally agree that the waiting sucks, I’m really glad I got to know early … it just occurred to me to put my stats up if you all want a comparison or something?

HS GPA: 3.62/4
College GPA: 3.74/4; Dean’s List and Second Honors
SATs: 2310
Major: Film Studies and Political Economy
HS Activities: orchestra, marching band section leader, creative writing club secretary,
College Activities: multi-instrumentalist, newsmagazine graphic designer, martial arts club secretary, television/filmmaking club, extracurricular language classes
Work experience: 4 years tutoring at a learning center, 5 years volunteering at a cultural school, 1 year as a marketing assistant/graphic designer
Long essay about wanting to study film at Columbia because they have a stronger program than my current school has, short essay about what my job as a graphic designer has taught me about life. I was pretty satisfied with them.
Recs: film professor, economics professor (I did the worst grade-wise in his class out of all my classes … but I think he knew I was trying haha)
And an art supplement for poetry to top it all off.

I don’t think I’ve done anything super amazing, so rest easy and hope for the best!

Just got my decision! ACCEPTED!!!

Major: Finance (switching to Econ) & Art History

GPA: 3.84/4 from Fordham
Recs: VERY, VERY good. (One from Columbia Alum, not sure if that helped at all)
EC’s: Pretty involved on campus clubs, numerous internships (including I-banking, branding, and law), started my own company, and volunteer often.

SAT: 2280
SAT II: Math II 780, USH 800, Physics 780

Essays: I spent weeks on them and tailored them specifically to Columbia.

High School:
GPA: 3.72/4 with upward trend from VERY competitive private school
Rank: School didn’t rank.
APs: five 5s and two 4s.
ECs: president of econ club, president of investing club, VP of green club, freelance wedding photography, freelance graphic design, JV/V football, JV/V track, weekly food bank volunteering.

How did you get your decision?

^I’d say it might be just trolling

I called in for my friend because he didn’t want to call in haha. I was told no decisions have gone out, and that Columbia does not abide by an early notification or “likely” system for the transfer round due to the already-high yield.

Good luck to you guys.

*Also, my friend is coming from a T3 school with a perfect GPA and ECs that blow most out of the water. Scores a bit lower ~2300 but still higher than almost everyone else. Published in a top journal. Musically talented (got into peabody) as well. If anyone would get an early update, methinks he would be in the consideration. And I also asked about rolling admission - Columbia doesn’t do that.

Not that everyone else is lying, just that…there was probably a non academic reason for them finding out early.

Starting with hooks or musical talents I’d guess.

Also one last thing, i don’t really care what happens to everyone on this thread but @Karen you’re incredible. I hope you go a long way.

@fosterwallace, @metathesis

Definitely no trolling. Package arrived to my home address! My grandpa called my mom (she’s out of town on business), and my mom then called me.

@LoganJ, out of curiosity, did you apply to Columbia GS or columbia college? Either one would be great but GS would explain the early notification (I guess).

Anyways congrats and I hope you enjoy Columbia and NYC.

I was really hoping Columbia would let us know today… :(

Let the games begin…tomorrow at 5pm eastern time we shall have our decisions. (Just got the email from Columbia)
