Official Columbia University Fall 2013 Transfer Thread

Weirdalsuperfan please post your stats, I got rejected from Fu Foundation. 4.0 GPA from a public school and amazing internship from a Big Bracket Investment Bank. Thanks.

Accepted! I applied early last year got deferred and then rejected. Still can’t believe this is true! I applied from USC as psychology major. If anyone’s interested please pm me and I am happy to share my stats!

Does anyone know if GPA at current school carries over?
And is there a Facebook group for transfer students?

Those who applied to Fu Foundation, did you guys take a SAT II Subject Test for Physics or Chemistry? Does anyone know if it is required in transfer applications? I didn’t take one and am worried that this may be the reason for my rejection. I just confirmed that it’s a requirement for regular decisions. Thanks.

yeah I’m feeling lazy lol. I’m 150% certain “stats” are ********. As long as you don’t have horrible grades you’ll be okay.

School: Washington University in St. Louis, Chemical Engineering and Applied Mathematics, plus a Compsi Minor
GPA: 3.72 + straight As on midterm report
Classes: Took 21 credits both semesters sophomore year. Took 17 first semester freshman year and 19 second semester, except I withdrew from a 3 credit class so that’s technically 16. My courses were pretty average for a good student freshman year (calc III, matrix algebra, diffeq, intro classes like genchem and physics even though I was an idiot and didn’t use my AP credit for genchem. If any hs seniors are reading this, USE YOUR AP CREDIT). This year I took the most rigorous courses possible that simultaneous met transfer requirements, fit with the curricula of the places I applied to, and kept me on track for Wash U’s own curriculum. Everything from 100 to 400 level (mostly 300 level).
ACT composite: 34
SAT: 2200
Took a lot of APs, like 9 or so. Got my IB Diploma.

Other stuff: I’m Hispanic, I do a lot of stuff, I follow my dreams, and I am a TA. I did a lot of work in a research lab, and I’m in a lot of leadership positions and stuff. I’m a national hispanic scholar and a national merit finalist. I have a bunch of other awards from high school, too. My recommendations were decent (one from my PI and one from my math advisor who taught me 2 classes). I honestly thought my MIT recs were worlds better but whatever. My professors weren’t affiliated with Columbia in any way. My essays were good. Also, I got an internship at MIT for this summer but I only informed Columbia about it like a month ago and they never responded so I don’t know if they actually read my email.

I probably left out a lot of stuff, but I’m pretty lazy so sorry for that. I guess this is a bad place to meet other transfer students…doesn’t really seem to be the point of CC…and I mean I don’t even know if I’m going to choose Colum, yet. Hope I was somewhat informative.

Also, for those who are wondering, being hispanic isn’t the reason I got in. I got in because I worked hard. And I got rejected from Harvard and MIT because I didn’t get my stuff together until the end of freshman year, so I had nothing to show for it. Cheers!

I forgot one thing (at least):

I took the SAT II, but only 2 tests b/c that’s all MIT asked for (b/c they were my top choice):
Math II subject test: 800
Chemistry subject test: 780

btw SAT II test scores don’t matter. Seriously…these stats are stupid. Just get good scores. If you get into a good school, your test scores will be pretty good…

And for junior transfers especially, high school stuff is almost worthless.

Rejected… Top 4 Engineering school with 4.0 college gpa and 2230 SAT, 2400 SAT II. applied fu fundation. Probably because I applied financial aid. Anyway, congratulations to those who get accepted.

Accepted with a 4.0 at a top 20 Private school

billyer, I applied for financial aid, too.

Seems like Columbia places a huge emphasis on current school ranking. Most of the people posting acceptances come from top 20 universities.

@sometransfer, I think you’re right. I don’t think my essays were particularly strong, but I did really well academically at Cornell and got some solid recommendations from my professors.

Hi everyone. I don’t usually make posts on CC, but I’d like to get to know some fellow admits. A facebook page would be nice :)

@weirdalsuperfan

I withdrew my application when I realised Columbia didn’t suit my academic needs. Congratulations to everyone who got accepted!

i got rejected but one of my friends got in, and i know he is super stoked about it

oh no i’m not international lol. Sorry you didn’t get in.

my finaid is horrible though…gonna have to find a way to take out an additional $10K in loans or consider penn when they (probably) accept me and stanford or yale if (in an extremely unlikely event) they accept me.

Has anyone received their packet in the mail yet?

@jason2216, my parents said they got the acceptance package in the mail this morning

so for international students, they send it to the permanent address? not the local address?

@DorytheFish, I don’t think so - I had called the admissions office about a week before decisions and asked them what address they had on file for me. They said my school address, and so I had the guy change my mailing address to my home address.
