[]Why I think I was accepted, etc: My interview went really well, I think. It was a little awkward in that somehow we got to the fact that I had been to therapy, but I think it managed to show how I can overcome obstacles? It was a really long interview, too.

Essays: Excellent I think. My parents would read them when I finished and give me suggestions, and I would usually start all over again. Finally I found some themes I liked. I’m a writer (poetry and short stories), so that helped.
Teacher Recs: excellent, my teachers really like me.
Counselor Rec: Don’t know, never saw it.
Hook (if any): Debate Team captain; recently presented a Bill to the State Legislature; Bicen Team winner; dual-nationality (aussie).

Other Factors: My Columbia interview was excellent, I really liked the guy (a doctor) and he hit it off with me. I think that probably played a major role.

General Comments: I am thrilled to be accepted, even though I can’t see any way at all that I can go, given the outrageous cost and the fact that I have been offered no aid. But it’s a thrill to know that you’re that good (Being accepted at Brown and Columbia is like a dream come true for me).

Other Schools: Rutgers, UConn, Rochester, Vassar - accepted
Waitlisted - Swarthmore
Not Heard From - Princeton, NYU

Essays: Excellent, I wrote about what it was like to live in a poor rural white area vs the wealthy suburbs. Now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn’t have bagged on the rich people so much.
Teacher Recs: excellent, maybe a bit uncreative
Counselor Rec: excellent

Other Factors: I didn’t have an interview, and I hadn’t shown any interest in the school (ie visited the campus or anything) even though I’m only a couple of hours away.

General Comments: I was already accepted early to my first choice school when I applied to Columbia, so it was more than a whim than anything to see if I could get into an Ivy League school. The only thing I am regretting now is the application fee.

I totally thought I was rejected since I got rejected from Penn and Cornell earlier today, I didn’t even check, but oddly enough I got an email saying I was on the waiting list, wow so surprised! It was a sad day until I got waitlisted, kinda sad, but oh well! Congrats to everyone!

i don’t mean to be offensive, but I guess I’m just bitter from my rejection. Did you have a great hook or something? Were your essays just stellar??

Those SAT scores and GPA are just WAY below average for a CC applicant.

[/ul]Other Factors: For the “what do you like most about Columbia” question I wrote about a really small but deeply impressing experience - one of opening up the columbia brochure for the first time and being completely overtaken and stunned by the double page spread photograph of New York CIty. I’ve never been to the USA, and I’ve certainly never seen a city so beautiful. General Comments: I hope these stats can be of some use to somebody else, in this year or in future years. I remember spending the last three months (uni just started for us Aussies, but we had a really long break) just obsessing over US universities, and going through these forums, looking at stats of successful applicants and thinking that mine was comparatively inadequate. I suppose the only thing I can say is that the whole selections process seems to me to be a lottery. What they say is right - 70% of applicants are qualified, and the rest comes down to luck. But yeah - best wishes to everybody!!

I am so disappointed. I can’t believe that I didn’t make it, especially when I read some of the stats and mine are better. Like they say who knows on any given day. ***K Columbia, there loss.

seriously. it all depends on luck… have they had their coffee? are you the 1st or the 500th person of the day. did they already find the “you” that they need in the apps before you. its so random and dependent on luck that stats dont even matter anymore. so the percentage went down 1% this year … ok so what in 10 years it will be 1% acceptance?
