Official Decisions

barnard and chicago. and for me this is the toughest choice ever.

Decision:
Accepted (Small, I know. How do I fix this thing?!!!)

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:1520 (V: 720 M: 800)
[] SAT IIs: 760, 740, 710, 700
[] GPA: 3.82ish
[] Rank: Top 15%
[] Other stats: AP’s 5 (Canceled: Anyone remember the 2003/2004 APUSH fiasco on collegeconfidential?), 5, 4, 3.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: My MLK essay was decent. Rest were also average (That’s just my opinion… others thought they were great?).
[] Teacher Recs: I didn’t get to see them, but I am guessing they were okay… They better have been
[] Counselor Rec: Same as above.
[] Hook (if any): Overall a solid candidate
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Seoul, South Korea
[] School Type: Private International School… Funny thing is, our school is far from being international- 99% the kids are Korean or from similar situation as me (which made it EXTREMELY competitive to apply to any of the “top 20 schools”)
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Korean-American)
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: Strength: Solid test scores, came from a hard school, and interesting background. Weakness: GPA trend (4.0-> 4.0-> 3.5-> 3.42); although it was a rough transition having lived in the south all your life… then all sudden boom you are in one of the largest/energetic cities in the world.
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I think I was accepted because I had potential and somehow, Chicago managed to see this through my essays, E.C.'s, etc.
[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Good E.C’s… I was really involved with tutoring kids, community service, MUN, and sports- which made me look really balanced as a student.

So ecstatic and relieved about being accepted to Chicago! I am pretty damn sure that I am goign to go. Anyways, best luck to all of you.

Next Stop: Prom Date.

Decision: Accepted!

Teacher recs, no idea
No hook

Location/Person
State or Country: Hong Kong
School type: public
Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Male
Major weakness: very few ECs and not very decent grades at school I guess
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I think I really managed to tell them I’m crazy about the university;P

I’m exhilarated!

vita86, what was the APUSH fiasco?

you guys who think that you need a weird, deep, or quirky essay are nuts. i wrote about the word ■■■■■■■■ and *****ed for a little about political correctness. seriously, that’s all. i even concluded with a cliche and a typo. just show a little capacity for reasoning-some decency never hurts either.

you wrote about whatttt???

you wrote about the word ■■■■■■■■… and what other word?? lol I WOULD LOVE TO READ UR ESSAY!!!

I just joined CC talk, but I’ve been following the threads for a couple of weeks.

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: TN
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian/Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] major strength/weakness: Self-disciplined/Haven’t ever had to really work hard (bad school)
[li] why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: I didn’t want to attend the local universities so I pushed myself to take independent study courses, go to good summer programs, be the first to take AP courses at my school (online, though), got the highest SAT score ever at my school (I know, it’s sad, but everyone at my school takes the ACT only), and I think Chicago liked my determination[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Basically, I think Chicago wanted someone from rural Appalachia, and I’m sure I’m the first one from my area to be accepted to UChicago ever.

You are also a lot like me (a few of you are).

 1. bad school
 2. self-motivated

Stats:[ul]

[] GPA: 2.7u/3.2w
[] Rank: Unranked
[] Other stats: 34 ACT composite.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: The best pieces of writing I’ve ever produced.
[] Teacher Recs: Incredible. One teacher told me, “I’ve never compared anyone to Jesus before, but I came damned close in this letter.” Another is locally renowned for her letters. Another said she wrote “a damned good letter,” which must be great, coming from her. The head of school wrote one too, and she loves me.
[] Counselor Rec: Fair, I guess. He doesn’t know much about me.

[] State or Country: Connecticut, USA.
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White

[] Major strength/weakness: My essays and recommendations / grades, respectively.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/defered: I pushed really hard for this. (More below.)[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
I did pretty much everything I could to get in here. After I got the waitlist letter, I e-mailed Jenny Connell at least once a week updating her on what I’d been doing; I mailed essays and certificates and such once in a while; I had teachers send additional letters and got letters from new teachers; I asked everyone I could about finding a Chicago alum who would talk to me. (I ended up speaking with three different Chicago grads who contacted Ted O’Neill for me.) I showed the University that I wanted to be there before anywhere else, and it worked; I couldn’t have been more excited when Ms. Connell called.

congrats danielsh =) thats pretty much what i did to get into reed… i just sort of ignored chicago’s waitlist though because i prefer reed (closer to home, yay portland’s no sales tax) but thats great that you got into your school!

Thanks! I’m excited about this; Reed wasn’t quite what I was expecting, and I think Chicago’s a better fit. Congrats on Reed!
