OFFICIAL Early Decision Applicants Thread (Columbia Class of 2014)

agh I still don’t know what to do.

@srrinath

Agh, how aggravating. Well it still doesn’t really say much about how they weigh it in comparison to one’s other credentials. I was just trying to say that they base SO much more of their decision on other factors. I think that people are preoccupying themselves over perfectly good scores. PLUS, there are PLENTY of students that are admitted with not every score in the 700s, so the “spectrum” isn’t really representative of the whole. I guess I’m just a bit angered that people on CC are so judgmental when it comes to scores.

Thanks for the information, anyway =/

any ED applicants from British Columbia, and do we really here about when they send out the decisions tomorrow?

is it true that canadians have it a little easier than most internationals?

@jalinovi: I apologize if I did sound judgmental. Though in all honesty, it was you who first tried to ‘correct’ our perception of what might be a good score in Columbia’s eyes. Columbia is one of few schools that routinely rejects 2400s but yes, it does take in students who have scores that aren’t in the 700s (which is what I implied when I said “in most instances”). And yes, I do agree with you that college admissions processes are far more holistic than just glancing at one’s scores. I fear that in a few days my own profile will become an example of this.

which day do you think we will get our results? Thursday or Friday?

Hi guys. I haven’t posted before but here’s a question - for ED, does Columbia routinely ask for mid-semester senior grades? I am trying to figure out if it means they’re at all interested or if Admissions is just checking off a box on the list…

@skibum91: Yes, it would seem so. Duke, which is another school that uses the ‘applyyourself’ platform was also due to release that information today/tomorrow (our time zones differ) before it changed it to Tuesday, so that might be the case with Columbia too. And while we’re drawing parallels to Duke, they’re releasing their decisions on Thursday so the same might be true of Columbia too. We’ll just have to wait and see.

@powerbomb: Conceivably so. But that’s only in the hypothetical scenario whereby curricular rigor and all other such factors are exactly the same around the world. It’s hard to predict anything purely from a geographic standpoint

GreatWhite78, I totally understand! It is nice to have someone who relates. :] At my school, OU is as good as it gets. Football fanaticism and binge drinking ftw! /sarcasm. Like, we only had five people out of last year’s graduating class that even went out of state, and two of those went to Texas, haha.

Speaking of being able to relate, does anyone else come from an area focusing on the ACT? I have a 36 on my ACT (not superscored), but I feel like my SAT & SAT IIs are slightly lacking… I only got a chance to take them each once, and I had to drive 45 minutes away both times.

nice job abbeecadabra!! yeah, i come from minnesnowta, so we focus on the ACT (i’d say 60/40). i got a 34 not superscored, and a 770 and 750 on my sat 2’s, so i wouldn’t way my scores were stellar, but i’m confident about my EC’s (i speak five languages and started a non-profit).

^Out of curiosity what are those five languages?

english, farsi, spanish, french, italian-- i kind of love languages :)

try speaking Chinese =D

i would love to learn mandarin! i took it in my school but the teacher was awful so i plan on taking it in college! (and hopefully at columbia… ahhhh thursday!!!)

Sarah! what does ur non profit specialize in?

so r we all going to post stats after decisions come out?

omg sarah! i speak five languages too!

you can speak farsi?! asldkjga; haha, me too! let’s communicate. :)

I love Mandarin! I took it two years in school, but my teachers went WAY too easy on us, we didn’t learn much. But I hope to take at Columbia as well! (fingers crossed!)

I’ve been running a web development business for about 4 years, and I recently launched a blog that teaches people web design. I get about 10,000 visitors/month on the blog. Would you say this is a unique EC? Like set-apart/hook type of unique. I wrote my essay on this too. You can see my websites here: [Total Pixelation Studios: Infinite Possibilites | Web Design, Web Development, Graphic Design, Print Design](http://www.totalpixelation.com) and… [Apoorv Vaidya](http://www.apoorvvaidya.com).
