Is it possible to change a Columbia app from ED to RD by any chance? Just wondering.

I don’t think so…by applying ED you signed a binding contract, and I think it says something about not allowing changes once submitted. I may be wrong tho, check the contract on instructions.

@Obstinate: you might have pulled it off earlier in the process with some proper explaining but not this close to the deadlines.

@Epaminondas: “ccangirl, I think it has more to do with the fact that Canada and th4e US are closely linked culturally and politically. Treat Canada as the 51st state, if you will, and you’ll understand why so many canadians get in.”

If you’re right, that means that Columbia is looking for applicants that fit best with Columbia’s political/cultural hegemony, which I don’t believe is the case, given the emphasis on diversity.

Even if Columbia was accepting based on ‘cultural/political linking,’ I don’t think Canada would fit the bill. Though similar in some respects, Canadian and American political systems differ greatly, both in structure and placement on the ideological spectrum. Structure-wise, Canada has a parliamentary system that fuses legislative and executive. If Columbia wants to except students from countries with similar political systems, maybe they should look to France? As for ideology, all Canadian parties are to the left of the American Democrats. Our current Conservative present is comparable to Obama, but is still to the left on many social issues, taxation, etc. This leads into the many cultural differences between the two countries, of which the melting pot vs. mosaic analogy is probably most relevant.

Anyway, the point is that Canada is a country, not a 51st state. I would hope that Canadians get in based on merit, not on an American imperialistic notion that we are second-class Americans.

@skibum91 - I’m actually from Vancouver itself. What made you think I was from the island?
