Official Early Decision Results Thread

deferred. this is really ridiculous that so many people got deferred. i think there are a total of 4 or 5 CCers who were accepted, but congrats to those who will be at brown next year! i like to think that i didn’t get accepted cuz it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe i will be much happier somewhere else closer to home or something.

deferred. life sucks.

Some of these comments are cross-posted on another thread, but to the Brown University acceptances I send kudos and congratulations. To the deferred I say the following…

I am known to all my friends as a glass-half-full kind of gal, but I want to interject some reality here. I have watched the admissions process over the past three years and tried to find statistics that shed light on the quandry of an ED deferral. My bottom line: schools don’t report these numbers.

Yes, there are individuals who were deferred and then admitted, but certainly over the past few years I think these applicants represent the exception not the rule.

If you receive an ED deferral, my advice to you is think long and hard about the school. IT IS THE SCHOOL’S LOSS THAT THEY HAVE PLACED YOU IN THE DEFERRED CATEGORY. Check out other options. Talk to teachers and counselors who know you best. Find a school that wants you rather than chasing a school that based on the data/odds will probably reject you this spring.

I cannot believe all these deferrals. I posted on the parents’ forum telling them to check the Brown ED results - this is like a blood bath.

Everyone here has amazing achievements. Please keep up your excellent work and don’t let this deferral or rejection define you.

I’m not even the parent of an ED applicant (an RD applicant, however) and this thread makes me feel so sad! Seriously, all of you have impressed me with your energy and your accomplishments and I wish you well. I would love to say it was easier in the olden days (70s) when I applied to school but I still feel the sting of Swarthmore rejecting me. For years I have told the story about how the alumna who interviewed me said at the end of our conversation, “Well, haven’t you done ANYthing interesting, like unicycling?” Since then, whenever I see a unicycle, I kick the tire. But I went somewhere else, had a wonderful experience, went to grad school in something completely different, and now do something I never dreamed of when I was 18. And I can’t imagine having done it any other way, so look forward and enjoy the opportunities that you have ahead of you. Maybe Brown, maybe not, but whatever it is, you will make the best of it. You are all so much more aware of the world, school today is so much more intense and the opportunities are just mind boggling. It’s a great time to be a senior in high school.

Decision: Deferred

Stats:
ACT: 32
GPA: 3.87 UW -only honors and AP classes
Rank: we don’t recieve our rankings but I’m pretty sure I’m in the top quarter
Subjective:
Essays: I thought that it did a fairly good job of “showing” who I am and how I think…those who read my essay thought it was good…perhaps it was too subtle?
Teacher Recs: I know that one was probably very good, another was perhaps a little bland (I don’t think he has written many recommendations before), and another was probably glowing (I studied math with her over the summer and she is a very positive bubbly person)
Counselor Rec: I read it and it was a very strong rec specifically for brown
Hook (if any): girl interested in engineering/math…red hair…? my interview went really well (I think)
Location/Person:
State or Country: IL
School Type: Public-apparently Brown doesn’t like public schools

Congrats to the accepted, good luck to the deferred.

Jason - There is actually hope for these deferred kids? S still really wants to attend Brown but we told him that a deferral is Brown’s nice way of saying no. I really hope we are wrong. On a positive note, he has sent out all his other applications way before the decision came out.
