craintrain: one bit of advice… relax ha-ha

After getting my acceptance letter from Vanderbilt a few days ago I am feeling much better because I would be happy going to either Gtown or Vandy (maybe a little happier at Gtown cause I could play baseball)

Is Georgetown the only school you applied to?

I think we need to start realizing most us aren’t going to make it. I hate to kill the excitement, but I was rejected before as a freshmen applicant and remember how being pumped up just let me down.

If we all go into the process expecting to lose, however, we can only feel better not worse.

i applied to other schools as well. i will hear back from colgate early next week…i am still waiting on others as well. i know a number of us won’t make it and i was rejected as a freshamn also. im just trying to give everyone a little support because i know i sure need it.

Welsh: I find your post utterly pointless. Everybody on this site is well-aware of the fact that Georgetown admits roughly 20% of those applicants who apply to transfer. It doesn’t take a genius, like yourself, to do the math. Other than stating the obvious, I see no reason as to why you posted other than to boost your self-confidence???. Seeing as you clearly believe yourself to be an accepted transfer student based on previous posts, you simply wish to belittle the other kids on this website.

thank you gsweitzer…I very much agree. This is meant to be a support group not a bashing ground. We wouldn’t be on here if we didn’t know how tough it was to get in. I got six thin envelopes last year from Georgetown and other top schools so I know how it feels. I had a very rough year with my family (I lost two grandparents) and I had a miserable experience at my current university. So I’m here to give everyone moral support because I know how much it means to have someone cheering you on.

I recommend Welshy to go back to Davidson and stay off this transfer student site if he has nothing worthwhile to contribute other than pointless remarks.

My brother is a Davidson junior, but he is much too ‘normal’ to hangout with a kid who masks his low self-esteem with arrogance by ‘bashing’ others online??? Is ‘bashing’ others online necessary Welsh?

welshy is entirely right. What you feel when you get a decision is entirely based on your expectation. I fully expected to get into GTown and I did. Didn’t feel accomplished. I fully expected to get rejected from Yale and I was. Didn’t feel bad. I fully expected rejection from Wharton. I got in and into their scholars program too (30 kids invited into that…). I have been drifting in euphoria for 3 weeks now. It’s all about managing expectations.

I was just trying to help people manage expectations. If you guys are really so sensitive and immature to believe that I meant anything offensive, you might have bigger issues then whether or not you are going to get accepted into Gtown.

Seriously, grow up.

I see countless kids with pretty good, but not amazing stats, on these boards getting their hopes up on incredibly difficult schools. This doesn’t mean they should give up hope; however, only fools fail to control their expectations.

Well, to change the subject a bit, for those that plan to go to Georgetown if admitted, have you looked into housing at all? Plan to live on campus or off campus as a soph/junior transfer?

I have seen a few threads on freshman dorms but have not read anything on where transfers generally live.

I think welsh is right, just don’t know if it needed to be said or wanted to be heard. Personally I don’t expect to get in, because I have always felt like no expectations means no disappointment. I have never applied to Georgetown before nor have I ever been rejected from a college. My reasons for going to Georgetown have more to do with me moving back to Washington and not really wanting to go to any other schools in the area.

Kulakai - I read that there is guaranteed on campus housing for frosh and sophs, but i hear its a roll of the dice after that. I suppose if you apply you will be considered, but as with most schools i’m sure there is some sort of off campus housing dept/website/org that assists with it. Funny thing is, what I would pay to stay in a small 1 br dorm for 9 months is less than what I pay for my 2 br all utilities included townhouse for a year in Richmond, VA. It fits in with the cost of living up in the area though. As a transfer it certainly adds a new dimension if you have to stay off campus because then you have to find a full time job in order to afford to live in the area.

Canzior - Understood. Being that I am a 27 year old non-trad hopefully transferring in as a soph, I’m not so sure I am excited at the idea of shared dorm rooms! I’m wondering if it is best for me to find an affordable place somewhere on the metro and just take the GUTS from rosslyn/dupont or if I should work on the side to afford to live within walking distance of the campus.

Does anybody know the average number of Junior transfers versus that of sophomore transfers? And also if it is easier to transfer in as a junior or as a sophomore…

Yeah Kai, I’m 28 and I am certainly not willing to give up living alone for bunkbeds. Do college dorms even allow alcohol use/abuse? I am not particularly interested in being Van Wilder @ Georgetown

Cheap living? You get what you pay for. Where you come from will determine what you consider to be acceptable living. In Annandale(nova) for example a small apartment in a neighborhood full of unemployed Mexicans will run you upwards of $800. I know because I checked and yes I know they are unemployed, I am not degrading them in any way. These areas are however typically high crime areas. Most of the area is the same way with some exceptions. There is also no metro station near Georgetown’s campus, which I’m sure was intended to keep a certain element away from the campus. Like Kai said though, you can take the GUTS bus right from there to campus

I have a cousin who lives in DC and he said that you need to be aggressive because a lot of the apartments are negotiable. So good luck guys I’m sure you can find something

No offense, but you guys seem older since you are referring to living in apartments and commuting, etc. I am 19…just wondering how old everyone else is…(and if you are a junior or sophomore transfer)

Does any one know how financial aid works as far as housing? If i get good aid can i take that money and rent a place instead of living on campus?I’m not thrilled at the idea of living an hour away from Georgetown but i can’t afford to live anywhere close to the campus.

The waiting for the decision is killing me too.
