Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2018 applicants thread

That financial aid thing was awful. I hope I’m not forgetting anything else, it didn’t help that Harvard completely changed their admissions website a few days ago, plus slideroom is still not up. Oh yeah, and Harvard is one of the only schools I’ve seen that hasn’t extended their deadline because of commonapp.

you don’t necessarily need to use slideroom. check out this page (https://college.harvard.edu/admissions/application-process/application-requirements/supplemental-application-materials</a>). you can submit things on CDs too by mail. it’s honestly not worth waiting for slideroom when the deadline is so close

Wait, wait, so we do have to send in the CSS PROFILE by November 1st in order to be considered for admittance if we marked “Yes” for financial aid on the Common App? I thought that it is due in February/March, and is called FAFSA. What’s the penalty for not submitting a PROFILE by the 1st of November? Will they consider my application incomplete and defer me?

***…

Chance me:
2.76 gpa,
1900/2400,
rank:540/1002

I know my stats are sort of weak, but my ecs make up for them.

Ecs: On the football team and in NHS.

Are you a football recruit already offered a spot? Because if not then zero chance.

Just bumping my question on the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE question for Harvard: if I don’t fill it out by November 1st (I marked “Yes” for financial aid), will Harvard defer me because the application lacks the profile, thus being incomplete? I’ve submitted everything else, obviously, and just found out about the Profile the other day.

Also, just had my interview! It went pretty well. Lasted about 50 minutes, we had a nice conversation on entrepreneurial ventures, and he said he’d convey my passion and that I am a good fit for Harvard. Application is completely out of my hands. Now fate takes over!

@ckfy63a I also have submitted my application yesterday (with all associated documents), but have not yet submitted my financial aid profile through Collegeboard. From what I hear, Harvard is quite generous with the way they handle the financial aid applications and usually there’s more flexibility with timelines for those, and will begin to evaluate your application on it’s own (it’s needblind, remember?)

I have a question for you though, how many days after you submitted the Common App did you get the interview request? And how did you get the interview request - through email or phone?

Finally, I’ve always wondered (and you just got interviewed, so perhaps you might know), does the interviewer come in the room, having an idea on who you are, as in what activities you are involved in, and how good of a student you are?

term: individual interviewers contact their people by whatever method convenient: email, telephone call. There is no rule. H interviewers know some stats: GPA and SAT/ACT I believe and school attended. Nothing about essays or ECs. (my college is different: we only know HS and nothing about anything else)

i have my interview tomorrow morning and i sent the interviewer my resume with my old SAT scores. however, i got new ones this week (2320 with the october test boosting my math score to an 800). should i inform her of this when i meet her?

Yes, you should update her! Good luck

Thank you so much @T26E4! As a follow-up, I am wondering, should I bring a short resume/interests sheet about myself to give to the interviewer? I have never been to a college interview, but for other interviews I’ve been to for things like summer programs, I’ve never had to bring other materials, so I am not sure if the same applies here.

@terminatorp, I heard from the interview coordinator about a week after submitting! I received an email with a pre-interview resum

Has anyone been able to get onto slideroom to submit supplementary stuff. It says something about October 28th, but I haven’t seen any link to online submission. I guess I will mail it if online submission isn’t up tomorrow.

Just finished both my CA and Harvard Supplement essays! Going to review everything and apply tomorrow!

Good luck everyone.

So I rush reported my SAT Subject tests which were 800 US History, 760 Chem, and 770 Math 2. Is there any disadvantage to rush reporting?

What’s rush reporting?

And is anyone else doing the extra, unnecessary (as in not required) supplemental essay on the topic of your choosing? Or is it just well-known that everyone who wants a decent shot does it?

^People say that all the applicants who really want to get in will write the extra essay, but it’s honestly not necessary if you’ve conveyed yourself well in the Common App essay and in the extracurricular supplement. If you have something to say that isn’t covered in your application, do it, but otherwise–especially if you’re submitting supplemental materials like myself (research, creative writing, etc.)–it might just be a waste of time.

Ah but I’m not doing supplemental materials…well now I don’t know.

Would it be weird if I didn’t have anything on my application about how I like to write but then send in some creative writing? Because I mean just writing in general can’t be considered an extracurricular at all, and I’ve never submitted anything to a competition…

So would it be bad to send in creative writing if they don’t really see any evidence of my affinity for it in my actual application?

I wouldn’t advise submitting anything just for the heck of it.
