Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

Some of these people here, as well as the 2740 comments are the reasons why I lost all faith in the class of 2019.

@entrebusecon , I got an interview to Oxford but it’s via skype

@quintanderson hey dude, dont worry about it - im sure you have other stats that’ll attract admissions officers. sorry if that’s not the advice you wanna hear, but that’s the best we can do at this point :)

@oberyn i’m confused as to what you mean by this.

@quintanderson‌ just one part of your application :slight_smile: everything will fall into place, I’m sure.

@Extradition I am so jealous of you right now. I asked them about Skype and they said Skype interviews are 'unsatisfactory", such nonsense.

@easycadence‌ @crimsonunicorns‌ You guys are right haha. You can’t know for sure until Thursday :D

To follow up on @NorthernMom61’s post, although not quite as eloquently:

Five years ago, my daughter applied to Yale SCEA, as she was interested in their undergraduate theater program. (Harvard doesn’t offer an undergraduate degree in theater, but will starting in 2016.)

Her teachers and guidance counselor thought she was a slam-dunk, so my daughter, graduating as salutatorian from her high school with a 97.8 unweighted GPA, almost perfect test scores and 5’s in 8 AP’s, assumed she’d easily be accepted. In fact, she was so assured that she ONLY applied to Yale. Try as hard as we could, we could not get her to complete her other applications. She was that convinced of success!

When decisions came out, she was deferred. Tears, self doubt, and lots of soul searching ensued. From mid-Decmeber to New Year’s Day it was absolute hell in our house. In those two weeks, my daughter redoubled her efforts and pumped out 10 more applications, including ones to Harvard and Princeton. In addition, she wrote a letter to Yale indicating that it was her first choice school, and had a third teacher write her an additional letter of recommendation.

In the end, she was rejected from Yale, waitlisted at Princeton and accepted to Harvard, where she will be graduating a bit off-cycle in two weeks, as one of 48 Phi Beta Kappa seniors.

There are several take-aways from her experience that are worth sharing:

You can be happy and successful at any college. As Jeffrey Brenzel over at Yale has said

Just because your dream school defers, waitlists or rejects you, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all colleges will do the same. Every college looks for something different – and what they look for changes every year. So, you have to be resilient, flexible and go where the winds take you.

Best of luck to all of you!

@gibby appreciate it!

OMG the pressure is taking over my emotions. sorry :((

^^ lmao chill

@rick13 It is non-binding early action, there is nothing to say it is necessarily anyone’s top school or that they need to have some expertise or infatuation for the school. Clearly “It’s a name I’ve known since always // Since I was 5 yrs old I knew I wanted to go to Harvard” etc represents how they at least know of the resources and what is stands for as an institution and all that. You can apply to Harvard for its resources without being obsessed with it and having it not be your top choice; that should not be grounds for rejection. What you say is ridiculous.

@rick13 its stressful tru

@gibby another take-away from your great post: I should probably get started on the apps for the rest of my college list! Harvard’s supplements were super easy compared to those of other schools.

@Oberyn‌ I’m also confused by what you mean

@rick13 I haven’t read all the posts here, but I haven’t seen anyone saying stuff like that or giving off those vibes. But in the end I don’t think Harvard cares about how much you know about it or how truly you want to attend. It is useless to get yourself worked up on stuff like that and the best thing to do is just wish everyone good luck.

“take your indifference/ignorance somewhere else” pretty authoritative for a first-time poster. I think most people like this thread just fine the way it is.

First of all, you are right.

Second, this forum has been praised for being full of positive and supportive people. There’s no reason for me to post such hateful commentary or make anyone feel bad.

It’s a tough couple of days coming up for all of us. Since we’re in this together we might as well help each other out! Sorry again… Whatever happens, I hope it’s the best for all of us. Being able to submit a competitive application is already an accomplishment! Love y’all

Ugh, petition for Collegeboard to put in search engines within conversations too LOL I’m struggling because the conversations jump so much

@Karabekian All my college apps are finished. Half have been submitted and half are still sitting depending upon H’s decision.

I can’t see this rick comment everyone is talking about!

I really need to start working on my other apps.

It’s interesting, I felt really confident in my chances until I read about Silverturtle.

@skieurope Smart. I guess I just like to live life on the edge.
