Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

Accepted
So shocked and grateful. All those deferred…good luck!!!
If you’ve been accepted, let’s set up a group PM so we can learn a bit more about each other before Visitas. CCis the best!

@jalebigirl‌ Love that idea! A group message sounds great, and it’d be really cool to finally put faces to (user)names at Visitas!

I will let my daughter post her results if she so chooses. She got Accepted as an international student (US Citizen living overseas). Wanted to share that in addition to strong academics (perfect scores in SAT and SAT subjects, first in school etc.) her biggest hooks were music and her passion for healthcare. She sings professionally for local Broadway productions and is leading healthcare initiatives that is impacting thousands of people. It has been a five year journey for her to get here, but the scary part is that the whole things seems to be ALL OR NOTHING. Her journey has been enjoyable, but not the admissions process, given the high stakes. There were lot of people rooting for her along the way and we needed every bit of support since we have no Hooks - no legacy, no family name, no wealth to speak of. Lots of hard work and she gave it all. I told her way back when - people may outsmart you but don’t let anyone outwork you. She listened and here she is. I cried knowing that there is value for hard work and merit in this world after all. Her competition from the area she was applying included lots of legacy kids, politicians’ kids, kids from large business families. Thank you Harvard for choosing her and seeing value in her hard work. My apologies that I haven’t followed the template prescribed here, but wasn’t sure where else to post this message.

I posted something similar in my post on the decision thread, but I’d like to reiterate it here!

To those of you who were deferred/rejected, I won’t try to tell you that I understand what you’re feeling or that you should not be upset for a bit, but I definitely can and will say that despite Harvard’s decision for you, you are the same person after the decision as before the decision. You are just as wonderful, just as accomplished, just as spectacular; Harvard’s decision is not representative of YOU. One door has closed, but there are so many out there that are still open! The number of reasons that Harvard’s door has closed is too large for you to speculate on why you weren’t accepted (and many of them are so arbitrary), so don’t be discouraged and keep trucking through. You all have my utmost support in all of your endeavors–please do not hesitate to message me with questions or essays to edit, because I would love to do so. Stay strong, my fellow seniors.

Asian male. And accepted! What?! I am so grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given, including this new, huge, life-changing opportunity I’ve received today!

@Melissawilliams I thought it was more than obvious that I was joking.

Get over yourself much?

Hello, Harvard applicants! I’m visiting from the Stanford REA discussion, but will be applying here in a few weeks.

To everyone who was accepted: congratulations!
To everyone who was deferred: good luck in RD!
To everyone who was rejected: I’m sure that you’ll get into another great school. A year from now, you’ll be happy at whatever college you attend.

@verbose maybe Harvard could see your true colors through your application…

:(

@oxoxhawja3xoxo Ouch. At least my color wasn’t my application.

Boom. Did I say that? Why did you make me say that?

@oxoxhawja3xoxo If you were actually trying to condole me then I feel really bad for saying that =/

Hi there! I’m an international and I got deferred without an interview! Seems pretty odd because in the email they say that they could not make a definite decision, yet they did not call me for an interview. Is anyone in this position as well?

@virago1‌ I am simply astounded that you didn’t get in! I’m very much aware of the rigor and selectiveness of TASP and obviously there is no other part of your application that could possibly be lacking. I empathize with the question - what more COULD you have done?

The quality of the accepted students is exceptional, and so are many of the deferred students. I have no doubt everybody will fare well regardless, and I think what we’ve seen so far really does speak to the strength of this applicant pool (unusually so, too, as it seems this year).

@eliiifm‌ They basically deferred all internationals that they did not accept. I didn’t get an interview and was deferred and I know someone that was interviewed and still deferred. A harvard deferal means nothing, close to a rejection imho.

How many ppl were accepted from deferral last year?

I got in. No words.

@Verbose - to put it in perspective - as an example which represents most ethnic classes, per last year stats of the 4000+ applicants early action, 10% were black (400+). Of these 400+ Black applicants, 300+ plus were deferred, 76%. Therefore, roughly 24% accepted (11% overall - 1 of 11); in line with overall acceptance of 21% of all applicants admitted. So no matter what your ethnicity is, if you are fortunate enough to walk the Harvard campus know at the end of the day 90 to 95 or so other people just like you were not accepted amongst all applicants, including regular decision.

When asked why we wanted to attend the school we applied, 95% of us answered to get a well-rounded education. We will expose ourselves to subjects such as, Early Civilization, Greek Mythology, Roman Empire, Ming-Dynasty and many others. What better way to have a well-rounded education is to dorm with someone of a different culture, country, or different religion and have the opportunity to have first hand exposure to others not like us. Learn to see the world from different views. Sitting in the school cafeteria and having intellect conversations and begin to appreciate people with different ideas and beliefs. Someone from Moscow Idaho, New York, Omaha Nebraska, San Francisco, Moscow Russia, Pakistan, India, Nigeria - those that have never explored outside ones backyard. Innovation and progress has been proven to be from a culture of collaboration and motivation.

Harvard and many other renowned universities got it right! It’s not all about numbers and words but about communication and having a comprehensive understanding nationally and internationally, which translate into awareness that minimizes our ignorance. As leaders we must learn diversity especially in a global world so when we work for others or make hiring decisions, we have an appreciation for the value that diversity brings to a successful workforce.

Do the math and understand the words - it’s not about affirmative action, it’s about exposing young minds to what makes the U.S. a global leader - A Holistic Approach. Everyone of you who were accepted should feel special and that you truly earned it. Moreover, all of us who applied should feel special that we were given the opportunity to try regardless of where we came from.

“At least my color wasn’t my application”

@Verbose‌ Another “joke,” or underlying bitterness? The world may never know.

Guys. The article is out. There was a 16.5% acceptance rate this year. They admitted 15 fewer students than last year, even though there were 1,227 more applicants than last year. That’s a 26.2% increase in applications. Interesting stats. Check out the article if you’re interested.
