Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@jellybae Did you send an act/sat in previously? Mine only shows the date they received the first one (9/30) even though my other schools have received my oct act.

@AnotherPSEOKid‌ No i didn’t send one previously!

@Karabekian‌ I have! I’ve entered the Novel Writing category twice, but I haven’t won anything. I’m going to try one last time this year :slight_smile: As for authors who have most influenced my style, that also changes a lot (my writing style tends to always reflect my current literary obsession, though it’s stabilized over the last few novels), but I’d say encountering Markus Zusak and John Steinbeck marked the most major transformation in my style. Reading Dostoyevsky and Holocaust literature in general most influenced my characterization and tone. Unfortunately, I have yet to read Vonnegut, though he’s been on the “waiting list” for a long time. I have read Best Teen Writing, actually! I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

Are you also a writer? If so, what kind of writing do you like to do?

What do you do if you want to update information on your application (add new information/achievements)? Thanks ahhhh I’m freaking out LOL

I want to know, too, @skslxxbjk ! I am considering asking my school counselor to write an update for me, but I am not sure if that is the best way to go about it! But, I have received some other awards since I sent in my application, and I want to add them in.

@calliemoon11 your writing experience is really impressive! :slight_smile: I also have an infatuation with Holocaust literature recently - there is a whole free online course on it but I haven’t been able to check it out due to living in an internet-limited zone… I love Dostoevsky too, but my writing is influenced more by other existentialist writers. I also still stick with short essays leaning towards philosophical writing rather than novels… I wonder what do you want to pursue in college? (sorry you probably have said it already somewhere in this thread)

@PcollegegirlP thankss!! I probably would want to keep my dream alive several hours more when I’m on the flight - the decision would crush my reality :slight_smile: Good luck to you anyway you seem really excited about the result - I believe you have really good reasons to put your hope in it :smiley:

@PcollegegirlP‌ yeah i’m on the east coast that’s probably why!

is anyone planning to concentrate in molecular & cellular biology or neurobiology?

@mimosa26‌ That’s so interesting! I was really interested in existentialism a while back! What’s your favorite existentialist work or author/thinker? I’m looking towards arts administration and novel writing. What about you? And what kind of writing do you like to do?

@harvard00‌ I’m planning to concentrate in neurobiology and behavior!

@mimosa26‌
Well, enjoy the trip till u can, my fellow philosopher :wink:
Hope u all the best too! I’m pretty EXCITED and NERVOUS…just hoping for the best and hoping to remain positive no matter what happens! I’m a optimistic person, well most of the time!
@harvard00‌ I guess that makes sense! :slight_smile:

@PcollegegirlP‌ I don’t know if you know this, but you come across as a really positive person even through short posts, and it’s really uplifting and inspiring, especially on a thread that is by nature filled with sky-high anxiety! You seem like the kind of person that would make a great roommate, classmate, and teammate, and I’m sure colleges will notice.

@mimosa26‌ @calliemoon11 !!! l’existentialisme ? Have you read Sartre and Camus ? L’Etranger ? I spent my school years studying them in my French literature course and now I study them in my Philosophy course (the French curriculum includes Philosophy - I don’t know if that’s the case in the U.S)

@calliemoon11‌ @mimosa26‌ “L’homme n’est rien d’autre que ce qu’il se fait. Tel est le premier principe de l’existentialisme” = “Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. Such is the first principle of existentialism.” credits go to Sartre. alala. This gives me butterflies.

@calliemoon11‌: I’ve been off this thread for a bit, but it’s so cool to find a fellow writer! Do you write YA as well? And have you sought publication? Man, the publishing industry is so hard to navigate. I have a full manuscript out with three agents right now, and I don’t know what I’m more nervous about – what they’ll have to say, or my Harvard decision, lol! Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? It’s really been helping me pass the time, though I’m pretty behind on my current project (just hit 28K :frowning: )

@arielle17 My English Lit class just read The Stranger!!! I thought it was awesome! (of course there were quite a few kids who got fed up with it haha)…Camus paints Meursalt’s almost sociopathic removal from normal behavior perfectly! I thought it was really believable and honest.

@hnorelle‌ @harvard00 Lol I’m going to study neuroscience!

@soccerlover17 truly amazing indeed ! Here is a very special footage for you then : it is a unique extract from a movie made by Visconti (one of my favorite Italian movie director along with Antonioni) after Camus’ Stranger : <a href=“Luchino Visconti's The Stranger (Straniero, Lo 1967)COMPLETE MOVIE Part 11 of 11 - YouTube”>Luchino Visconti's The Stranger (Straniero, Lo 1967)COMPLETE MOVIE Part 11 of 11 - YouTube; . As you may have recognized this is Mersault’s “soliloquy” - a true masterpiece of literature. You can truly capture in this scene the “sociopathic removal” you mentioned. Magnifique.

@calliemoon11 @arielle17 I love Existentialism though it turns out harder (and more interesting!) when I start digging a little bit deep into it than it appears on mass culture. I’ve read L’Estranger and Nausea, and I do like them - I’m jealous with your curriculum arielle :slight_smile: We don’t have it in US high school curriculum, but we can still take it through dual enrollment in a college nearby or online… or just watch a bunch of free lectures on the internet :smiley: I’m more into the writings of Kierkegaard though, and Heidegger is still too difficult for me to like him :blush:
Btw I got pissed a bit with Sartre after reading his autobiography :neutral_face: How do you guys Frenchmen think about Sartre :)?
I plan to major in Philosophy actually, but I’m leaning towards Aesthetics in grad school (don’t ask me what beauty is - no idea! - that’s why I want to learn more)

And @calliemoon11 I really agree with what you say about @PcollegegirlP :)

You are all so interesting I wish you the best on your way :slight_smile: for now just hope our ways will cross :)

@arielle17 Thanks! I probably have to watch the rest of the movie now haha
