Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@thingenthusiast‌ You hit it right on the nail! I think applying to Harvard SCEA is a really hard thing to do because it feels like such a crapshoot. Of course applying to other places ED is also really scary, but Harvard’s selectivity is a new level. I feel like I’m going crazy, I’ve forgotten how to relax hahaha

@oxoxhawja3xoxo‌ Yeah I’ve been writing my other essays because I don’t want emotions from H decision to come out in my other apps :stuck_out_tongue: Great boyfriend comparison btw, very very true! A lot of this waiting anxiety is also due to the fact that I just really want to know where I’m going to be next September. I’ve never lived in the States so I’m dying waiting to see where I might be come next year. If I don’t get Harvard, waiting till March for regular decisions is going to kill :frowning: Still trying to stay hopeful though!! Less than two weeks :open_mouth:

I think this thread already surpassed last years
anyone also thinking its weird that harvard didnt post about their stats for class of 2019 early action!? they already did last year at the same time

What countries are you internationals from?

@marioharvy‌ Maybe they are embarrassed by how much the applicant numbers have dropped ;)

Or they went through the roof and they are waiting for the perfect moment to brag, lol :open_mouth:

Hi everyone!! I’ve been following this thread for quite some time and this is my first time posting! I wrote that I was undecided about my major because I am hesitant between Applied Mathematics, Economics and Computer Science…
Do you think the admission officers will consider this to be a weakness on my part? If so, would it be worth it to update the admissions committee?

If you guys want to take your minds off freaking out about Harvard/college for a bit (god knows I should… LOL) then check this out!!! :')
<a href=“Homeless Dog Gets Makeover That Saves His Life! - YouTube”>Homeless Dog Gets Makeover That Saves His Life! - YouTube;

@harvard00 I’m a US citizen living in Canada!! Not sure if that counts as an international haha

I had my interview on Wednesday and thought it went well! He said he was impressed and suggested I take Prof Malan’s CS50 course haha. Lasted for a bit more than an hour. How did everyone’s interviews go?

@tdimo97‌ No; gibby pointed out that many applicants do switch majors, so I guess Harvard looks more at who you are as a person than at your interests, though I’m sure it matters a little!

It would be amazing if most of us got in and met at visitas!

@youngster9 I could totally see that happening. Harvard waiting until the day before decisions are released and casually revealing that they got like 8000 early applications lol

@oxoxhawja3xoxo‌ I actually haven’t taken any college tours yet. I’ve driven around Dartmouth’s campus (beautiful campus and area in my opinion) and some colleges around the Boston area, but that’s about it. I plan on doing tours after I’ve gotten accepted into some colleges, assuming they don’t all reject me (nervous laugh).

@youngster9‌ I also heard about Steve Ballmer’s donation, which is sweet because I plan on majoring in CS (with a visual arts related minor) if I get into Harvard. Hopefully they accept more incoming freshmen that intend to be CS majors as a result this new donation and expansion, although @gibby‌ has pretty much dashed my hopes.

@thingenthusiast you’re scaring me… the EA acceptance rate has continued to increase… What if it’s 25% this year? Haha

@acollegec AHHH I’m dying. Thank god I have exams and all that coming up to take my mind off of it. That’s so exciting, your first time in the states though! Where are you from?

In two weeks, when people ask us where we’re going to college, we may be able to say Harvard. WOW. It’s surreal.

@ninetyneinprobs oh nice. Yeah it’s definitely good to wait to see where you get in. But visiting does make a huge difference!! It definitely helped me figure out what kind of schools I like and what I don’t like. In some instances, schools I thought I would love ended up rubbing me the wrong way, but that’s good because it’s helped me eliminate schools from my list. Fortunately, Harvard is still on it!! You will get in to some schools! More than you think probably. :)

@thingenthusiast‌: You perfectly summarized my thoughts. This entire process has been such an emotional roller coaster, to use a very applicable cliche. Right now, I’m in the “I’m-not-getting-in-so-I need-to-apply-to-every-school-in-the-country” stage, haha. It’s fun to consider the possibilities, although writing all of these supplements makes me want to tear my hair out.
@oxoxhawja3xoxo‌: Love the boyfriend metaphor! And I’m so glad to hear that your mom is doing well now :slight_smile: Harvard’s financial aid is definitely one of the most attractive aspects of the school.
@youngster9‌: That’s a comforting statistic, though I suspect that number is a bit skewed. I’m sure a lot of the people who were deferred or rejected were too dejected to post their results. On the other hand, CCers are generally more qualified than average applicants from what I’ve seen (some of you guys have done so much, it’s intimidating), so I’m sure that even with this taken into consideration, the acceptance rate would still be higher than average! Thanks for calculating that; it makes me feel a little better :)

@frozens thank you. haha I feel like there are no boys in this forum freaking out. just us girls…

Interest in CS has been exploding and many colleges are having trouble keeping up with the growth. Harvard won’ t be able to hire 12 new professors anytime soon because they don’t have the space. Even if they did, it takes time to find the right people and the there is currently a hiring spree going on at many of the top schools across the country. Harvard is hoping to move SEAS to new facilities across the river in North Allston in 2018 if all goes as planned. This should give them the much needed space to fully expand the CS dept. Of course, they will probably start adding faculty soon, but slowly, in anticipation of the move.

@oxoxhawja3xoxo Hahaha maybe only 2100 applicants applied early and it just so happens that they form the most talented, diverse class humanly possible so we all get accepted and there won’t be a need for regular decision

@frozens‌ I think the feeling intimidated about each other continues even after we are accepted. Check out this great video from Visitas last year.

Edit: <a href=“This is Harvard: Visitas - YouTube”>This is Harvard: Visitas - YouTube; (lol, forgot the link)

There is a question about your biggest fear and a few of the people say they are still intimidated by their peers. So I guess it is totally normal for people who are accepted, so you would fit in ;)

@Falcon1‌ It will take time, but the fact that CS will have a new harder focus at Harvard will open many new opportunities. I think the move to Allston will be interesting, it is essentially putting engineers in a completely other area, all the way on the other side of the business school. I personally am wary of it. Since we would be the class of 2019 we would get to see on year of that.

@oxoxhawja3xoxo‌: I hadn’t even realized that, but come to think of that seems pretty true! I’m actually kind of excited for when we post our decisions on the thread with info like gender, because I’m so bad at guessing it over the internet. I just assume everyone is female, haha!
@youngster9‌: I love that video! The students are seem so cool and down to earth, which (unfortunately) makes me like Harvard that much more. I can completely empathize with with their feelings of intimidation, because I’ve seen some credentials on this site that just made my jaw drop! Have you seen the Opening Days video from the same channel? I watched it a couple of months ago and it was fantastic :slight_smile: <a href=“This is Harvard: Opening Days - YouTube”>This is Harvard: Opening Days - YouTube;
