Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@Burke1 I am 30 minutes to the west of Boston, but other than that I have no clue. I was just happy because it meant they hadn’t rejected me yet

@Zerowulf Oh wow!! Interviewing with one’s regional admissions officer is not something everyone gets to do. It’s a promising sign!

@entrebusecon‌ I already had way too much material on my main EC, so I talked about a pretty eccentric personal hobby, writing modernized versions of my favorite Greco-Roman myths and historical events.

@entrebusecon‌ For my EC essay I talked about a team I was part of that helped me grow during high school and exposed me to a new discipline I never considered. This essay won’t be the deciding factor in rejection so don’t worry too much about it. If I were trying to be very pessimistic it is just another tidbit to help ad coms get to know you a bit.

Were you interviewed the 2nd time with an admissions officer? Did they say anything that would explain why you were offered a second interview?

I think I talked about why I joined the certain EC and took the leadership position… I didn’t really talk about what I got out of it, which I probably should have done lol. To me, why I joined was much more important at the time I guess.

@entrebusecon‌ For my EC essay I wrote about how I do speeches every now and then at the run away shelter in my area to show that I, too, have been through what they have been through and it’s possible to overcome anything they set there mind too.

On another note, Hello everyone!!! I have been following this thread since the beginning haha…

@Zerowulf‌ Sounds like you got a great opportunity!!! I hope you nail it. While we may never know why you got this additional interview, we can all still cheer for you.

I wrote my EC 150-worder on my work with a youth-staffed environmental nonprofit I’m an executive in. It was a cute little piece.

@youngster9 thanks!

10/11 days. I don’t know how I’ll make it 'til then. It would be so much easier if I was in a 1 week coma 8-}

@norsinboston “It would be so much easier if I was in a 10/11 day coma”

@calliemoon11 You are so interesting! I really hope the AdComs recognize that. :slight_smile:

The same could be said about basically everyone here - the authenticity, intellect, and camaraderie on this thread is so inspiring! You guys truly deserve the best.

@thingenthusiast‌ Awwww, thank you!! :slight_smile: Same goes for you! All of you are such fascinating people!

Hey guys, last year I wrote a bunch of short op-eds about econ. I had them all on a lousy google site. Since then, I have created a much sleeker website and started adding the op-eds etc to that website. As I did this I realized a lot of them were a bit immature/needed editing. Because of this, I have been going slowly back through all my old pieces and heavily editing/redoing them. On my Harvard app I only mentioned my new website which only has some of the op-eds uploaded (because they others are still being fixed). Do you think the unfinished nature of my site will harm me? Thanks

@frozens‌ Thanks for the link! :slight_smile:

@entrebusecon No, the work-in-process nature of your website will not harm you.

My EC essay was about social entrepreneurship and how this club I founded last year has sorta changed the culture of my high school.

@skslxxbjk Oh my god! Me too!
I also wrote a humorous take on a non profit volunteering organization that I decided to found

I wrote about the tedious but rewarding process of science research for my EC and tried to show perseverance and intellectual curiosity through that, not sure if it worked though.

By the way, just curious, what do you guys think is the most interesting/unique part about your application? (Not sure if this it’s already asked or not; Sorry if I am being redundant) :)

For me, it might be the manga (Asian comics) scanlation group I started for fun to translate Japanese and Chinese comics to English. I listed it as #10 on my EC list, though, and didn’t mention it at all in my essays.
