Best of Luck Olsi! Lets just hope you get the result which will bring you the most happiness eventually…

…just a small note from an experienced IUBer…

Be sure what you are studying and read the programm handbooks on the IUB site to get a basic idea of what you are expected to know and what you will be “taught” (self-teaching)…

EECS is BAD …EVIL… NO PROGRAMMING BACKGROUND= MAJOR CHANGE!

what abt BICB …

u seeem to scare away the whole world against IUB???:p:p

SM

mjehan, I am not sure I understand what you mean. Are you implying that you need to have programming experience before entering IUB for this field or it would just be helpful. And as I have read from some other posts of yours you say that EECS at IUB sucks? Could you tell us prospies why?

Hey Smartmind do you know when the fin aid decision will be sent to us by email?

IUB is great for Social Science and Biology (Bio, BCCB,BICB,BCE and BNS)… other majors suck… if u later plan to go into Medical or Economic grad schools then forget IUB !

PROGRAMMING KNOWLEDGE IS A REQUIREMENT FOR EECS…!!! Even though they don’t write it down on their site there is no human was possible that u will survive in EECS without any prior programming experience… u are made to learn three programming languages in 4 weeks !!!

well I have seen many books with titles like teach yourself C++ in 21 days. I myself have learned some languages this way. it may be hard but still managable. Nobody said it was easy. Anyway i think some programming background would be helpful

Accepted in Round 3…
waiting for finaid now…
Integerated Social Sciences major…

For Economics, IUB is not the place to be.
For EECS, definitely - provided you can handle the course load.
Those of us who hav programming knowledge find it is only 2% of the course, so even if you are great at programming, doesn’t mean you will do good here. However, if you have NO programming experience, be prepared to face a lot of difficulty. It’s do-able, but I still suggest anyone who is planning on doing EECS at IUB to go out and start to learn C++ NOW, or at least any one programming language. That said, EECS curriculum here is quite good, if not very good. It does not ‘suck’ by any measure. The curriculum is as good as as Carnegie Mellon and no too far behind MIT’s, definitely far better than some american LACs or smaller technical colleges.

EECS dropout rate in 2004 52%… EECS dropout rate in 2005 59%…

Is Computational Science also very tough? Is it good?

question:

Do they dropout because they find the course tough to handle ? or is it because of poor faculty ? or is it because they feel that after graduation options are tough & limited ?

My views:

mercurysquad commented that the EECS courses are comparable with CMU standards. If these dropouts had no chance of admission at CMU level univ’s- probably they do deserve to drop out.

mjehan… did U dropout of EECS ? If yes
what was UR C+ exposure before joining?

Do students have an option to change their major ? If so when do they typically do it ? Is the admission strictly based on the choices we ticked ,or can we change it at the time of enrollment ? Someone pl answer. Thanks

Most dropout voluntarily because of the courseload. Some are kicked out because from this year on, there are special requirements only for EECS studets (like minimum 3.33 GPA).

Students can change major right up to the third year, as long as the courses you have taken or plan to take will satisfy your new major’s requirements. Most EECS majors switched to Physics this year.

When you arrive, you are automatically assigned to your first choice major that you selected on the app, but you can just fill a simple form and get it changed whenever you want.

2006 course catalog indicates Computer Science as a major.
Is this a new option ,can one graduate with a degree in CSc ?Pl advice

Computer Science is a hybrid between Maths and Computer Programming… you need to have a really strong maths background… and not the normal maths…the weird maths that consists of set theory, logic, induction, etc…

welll … wat abt programming knowledge being required for computer science ?>??/

SM

Well some sort of programming is needed for almost any major, even the psychology majors do SuperLab and SPSS and the geoAstro majors program in IDL.

So obviously as a Computer Scientist you will be expected to know programming, and although you are taught about everything here, the pace is quite fast, so you will need to put in a lot of effort if you know no programming beforehand.

And don’t worry about the “weird” math, as a math or computational science major, you will have to study many kinds of mathematical concepts, so you will love some and hate some.

Are there any Social science Subjects at IUB?

I am really on a posting spree
