**OFFICIAL Mt SAC CC TRANSFER THREAD**

hi i m from nepal i had 111o cr + math and i from GCE A level college from nepal have few A grade and e general paper … 2170 in sat2 , i need to find any community or state university so they can afford me in decent scholarship , can you people help… there are a number such state university which can afford , but they don’t give any scholarship that’s the main problem for me, who is eking out of meager living in rural part of nepal. i m really want head way to usa … so any of you can help me

i have no idea how to answer that one…
i suggest you email mtsac

heres the admissions department
admissions@mtsac.edu

and heres scholarships
scholarships@mtsac.edu

does anyone know if we need our books on the first day of class? and will the teacher ask for our id? atm i only have my high school id. never got a chance to go get a mtsac id

ive only had a few professors that required books on the first day. most likely u wont. but do get it fast!

and ive never had a professor ask for ID (aside from tests) i dont think the professor will ask for mtsac id specifically anyway, a drivers license would do. but do make sure to get your mtsac ID ASAP!

another thing is that one of my engineering classes is schedule on tuesday but it says the start date is august 27th do i go there tmr or on tuesday? if i have to go tmr then that would be impossible since i have another class starting at the same time.

go on the start date :)

Where I plan to transfer to: UC Berkeley
Major: Economics
GPA: In high school? Not so hot.
High School: Troy High School (explains the above)

Hi, everyone! So I’m getting settled in with my classes and whatnot, but I still have a couple of questions. These have probably already been answered within the 118 pages of this thread, so I apologize in advance.

1) If this is my first semester at Mt. SAC and I plan on transferring in two years, would that mean I send my application in Fall 2013? …which would give me Fall 2012, Winter 2012, Spring 2013, and Summer 2013 to compile a strong enough GPA?

2) Because the credit limit for Winter Intersession is 7, it would mean that I can’t take the two 4-credit classes that I was eyeing for Winter. If I were to take 15 credits of classes this Fall semester and maintain the GPA requirements, could I petition with the counselors to let me register beyond the credit cap (the reason I ask this is because Winter registration is during Fall semester)?

3) Does anyone have any recommendations on private colleges that I could be interested in applying to? I’ve already shown interest in USC and NYU, but are there others?

4) How essential are Honors classes to admissions counselors at the transfer level?

correct :)

you can take more units, you just need approval and along with approval comes a strong GPA. you can get an approval from a counselor
so yes. you can. but keep in mind these classes are packed so…it will be hard to get 2.

none that im aware of. but if u have questions about sc i can help :)

not essential, many transfers to berkeley didnt do honors. but many have as well. personally i enjoyed honors and it could only help your application and never hurt…right?

i cant speak for the admissions at UCB so idk what theyre looking for but i played it safe and went with completing honors. one of my fellow classmates did honors but didnt complete it and still got acceptd to UCB so…all about what you got!

Awesome! Thank you so much!

Whew. One year is such a short time. I guess hitting the ground running is more important than ever. From what I read on the thread though, I can get away with not getting a major prerequisite or two done on time as long as they’re finished by like… the January after I apply, correct? (For Econ throughout the UC’s, it’s CALC 180, CALC 181, Micro, and Macro)

One more question; can you tell me a little bit more about the Honors program? Like, is the workload significantly higher? I’m probably going to do it; I just want to know what I’m getting myself into. Thanks! :]

yes you can get away with it, but its always better to do your best to finish as much as possible.

the workload is more but it wasnt to my breaking point. i took 1 honors class each quarter and did just fine. there are some classes that are NOT honors courses and were just super heavy in work and i was really surprised. one class was art history: art of asia or something like that and it was one of the hardest classes i took at mtsac.

Alrighty! Thanks a lot!

does anyone know the average gpa for transfer students who were accepted into ucsd with engineering majors? Also i plan to major in aerospace engineering and should i ONLY take the classes that are listed in assist(dot)
org? in the list, there are several courses that are not available at mtsac and must be taken at ucsd. how will i take those classes if i dont even go to ucsd?

@Vltord: I’ve looked around for information similar to what you want, and I haven’t been able to find much. You shouldn’t really worry about the numbers though, just do as well as you possibly can.
In regard to the class list on assist, the classes that are not offered at Mt. SAC would have to be taken after you transfer there. I’d suggest looking on the UCSD website itself, as I tend to believe that the official school websites are more clear when it comes to this kinda stuff. That way you can clear up any questions you have in regard to your major-prep and general eds.
By the way, you might want to look into doing some extracurricular activities, as that could help you get in. I’d suggest you join SPS (Society of Physics Students) since you’re an engineering student. They’re planning on having a booth at the upcoming “Join a Club” event. You should check them out.

if u want an extremely rough estimate…

for most UCs… expect a 3.5 or higher to be comfortable at
and a 3.5 is probably what id consider a minimum for LA and Cal, id shoot for 3.8+ and its almost a sure foot onto those campuses

but you can always check the UCSD transfer threads and they usually post their accepted GPAs and ECs etc

If u go to the UCLA website you can see the average GPA for the major you’re interested in.

[Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2011 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof11_mjr.htm)

Ucsd might be a tad lower in accepted GPA, but not by much.

also another question, the classes that im taking are not part of my major such as engr 1 (1 unit) , astro7 (4 units). lets say i get a C grade in both these subjects but i get As and Bs in the required courses listed in assist. would it be considered into my gpa or would the grade for the core courses would only be counted. also other ge courses are not listed in the course list. where should i look to find them?

if the class is transferable it will count towards your GPA if it isnt, then it will count for your MTSAC gpa but not for your transfer GPA.

check IGETC for the full course list of transferable courses and GEs
you can also look up major specific IGETC lists, i believe if you search google for a transfer articulate agreement? i forogt…

I dont think engineering major use the igetc course list to transfer. i remember on the igetc sheet that it states that it is not for science and engineering majors. also getting a “C” gradeor lower in a 1 unit course would not hurt me that much , am i correct? (we only meet for 2 hours once a week for 8 weeks)

@ Vltord

Whether or not IGETC is recommended for engineering majors depends on the school. Different schools have different general-ed requirements for high unit majors. For example, assist.org states that UCSD and UCI recommend potential aerospace engineering majors to follow the IGETC curriculum, while it states that UCR doesn’t want them to follow that pattern. You might want to look through their respective websites to find out exactly what they want in regard to these and other courses.

You’re right about the one unit class, btw. Getting a bad grade in that class won’t hurt your GPA too bad, but you really should be shooting for A’s in those type of classes. Take it from someone who has finished almost all of the engineering pre-reqs: you want to get A’s in all of the easy classes because it becomes quite difficult to maintain a high GPA as you go through the higher division requirements.

i searched assist and it did not specify that igetc is for engineering majors specifically for aerospace engineering at ucsd. another thing, for class that are not important to my major like astr 7 do i have to include it in my transcript?
