Glad to hear you did will.

Yea, I bet there’s a ton of slackers. How are office hours for these big classes of yours?

Glad to hear you did will.

Yea, I bet there’s a ton of slackers. How are office hours for these big classes of yours?

^^ Office hours are similar to Mt. SAC. Maybe once or twice a week for an hour or two unless you make an appointment. If the class has a discussion you can go to the TA’s office hours too.

Are there lines outside the professors office to see him? Does he go over your essay with you if asked to?

depends on the professor, but most of the professors i had at sc were actually encouraging students to visit them during office hours or talk to them about papers, projects, etc

i even had one professor who gave extra credit for visiting him during office hours haha

No lines usually. But professors/TAs do encourage you to go see them.

Sweet! That’s nice to hear. Well guys, happy new years eve.

@iDizzle: thanks for the feedback! It’s good to hear someone else who was once in a similar position now doing great at UCLA! Congrats! I’m just curious to know more about what you did/classes you took at mtsac when you first went back. I checked the waitlist 10 times a day until I finally got some classes for Winter 2013 so I’m finally in! Anything else you think I need to know/suggest doing to get things going? Also, did you plan all of this out with a counselor or is it best to do things on your own? I know at some schools the counselors don’t know **** and it’s just a waste of time. Sorry, one more thing. How does the repeating a course thing work. Because I’ve taken a course at a school in another state and want to retake it at mtsac. At mtsac and other 4years like ucla, how does the repeated course get taken into account gpa wise? Thanks & sorry for all the questions :)

@ Talarose: Congrats on getting classes man! Yeah I admit it’s much tougher now than when I went back in 2009. I actually did not plan things out with a counselor which I probably should have but I still ended up doing ok.

When getting classes, the trick is to be persistent. lol. Some advice would be to just figure out what you want from Mt. SAC, keep on track and distance yourself from all the ********. Since like most community colleges many of the kids there are just there to slack off and be baby sat so don’t get sucked into that.

Make sure to check assist.org for the requirements for your major and take those along side your IGETC courses. The reason it took me 3 years to transfer(besides the fact that i was working 45 hours a week) was because I was originally doing the communications major for UCLA but being that the avg GPA to get in was 3.94 I didn’t want to waste my time so I changed to Anthro. So the whole time I was at Mt. SAC I took anthro and comm requirements since I planned to apply to a bunch of schools. Also keep in mind that I took class year-round(Fall, Spring, Winter, Summer).

Yes it would be a good idea to talk to a counselor but I don’t think its completely necessary if you know what you’re doing.

I had a bunch of D’s and F’s from my previous community college, so what I had to do was go there and fill out “Academic Renewal” forms to wipe those F’s and D’s off of my transcript. You can either do Academic Renewal or retake the class and petition for your new grade to replace the old one. You may want to do a combination of AR and petitioning since most schools only allow up to a certain number of units when doing AR. So if you’re over the limit, the rest of the classes you will want to retake and petition. The D’s and F’s are technically still on the transcript but they no longer affect your GPA.

Funny thing about repeating the courses. I took a class at my previous CC and got a C which is passing. When I started Mt. SAC I did not know about AR or petitioning, I just assumed that you start “fresh” which is not the case. So I retook that class that I got a C in and got an A at Mt. SAC. So I’m not sure if UCLA used the original grade of the C or the A. Technically that would have been an “Illegal” retake but I never got **** from UCLA for doing that. It wasn’t until I spoke to a counselor until I found out about Academic Renewal. So definitely talk to one and first explain your situation and see what they have to say.

Regarding your first post, don’t be scared to apply to the schools! You know when I made that first step to return to school in 2009 I was like “Ok I’m just going to transfer to CSUF, get my degree and be over with it”. But while I was there, overtime my mentality changed to “Aim high, land somewhere in between”. Needless to say that seemed to work out pretty well for me. I actually applied to 12 different schools, 8 UC’s and 4 CSU’s and got accepted to all but Berkeley. Of course most people would not apply to so many but for me it was more of a self-confirmation type thing to see how much I have improved. And hey, if you don’t apply, you will never know!

Sorry, this is really long too but good luck! Feel free to message me if you have any more questions or if I missed anything in my post. My younger brother transferred to UCLA Fall 2011 and my sister is a UCLA hopeful for Fall 2013 too so I’ve been around this process for a while now. LOL

@iDizzle: no, I really appreciate it! Thank you again, it’s been very helpful. I was just wondering about applying right now as opposed to down the road once my gpa has gone up. I feel like it would be a waste to even try and apply now because I wouldn’t get in anywhere. Any thoughts?

@ Talarose: Ohh I see. Okay, well did you end up applying in November or have you decided to put it off until next November? I think it may be detrimental if you acquire too many units before applying. I applied with ~80 units and the UC’s will cap you off at 105 UC units, i.e. 60 CC units=90 UC units. And if you end up taking a few semesters off before applying because you already have all the requirements I would assume that it doesn’t look great either.

Did you just start at SAC or what is your current status? Units? GPA?

@iDizzle: currently I have approx. 15 credits froma university and around 40 from a CC. I graduated HS in 07, did 1 semester at a university, and then Transferred to a CC. The last time I was at school was fall 2010/winter 2011. Winter 2013 will be my first semester at SAC. My cumulative gpa is around a 2.0. I didn’t apply to schools for fall 2013 because I thought it was a waste of money because my gpa was too low but I was considering applying for spring 2013 at places like cal poly, la Verne, etc but didn’t end up finishing YE application. I know most universities other than cal states and UCs you can still apply for fall 2013, I just don’t know if I should even bother. That’s $50+ per school.

@talarose: Oh ok than you are almost there. Did you start “fresh” from CC or do you have passing grades from the first university that you attended? If you do have passing units from your previous university you should check to see if they fulfill any requirements.

Yeah the 2.0 is low so hold onto your money for now and boost your GPA. If you do apply now you may just be settling for a CSU and even that is not guaranteed as they are becoming more and more competitive.

Just check with a counselor(from previous schools and SAC) to see if all your units transfer from the university or the CC you previously attended than start from there. Use AR or petition for any failing grades and just boost your GPA as high as possible for next Fall.

When I dropped out from Fullerton College in 07 I had a 1.5 GPA. I got AR for all the classes that I could but unfortunately I got Cs in some which are not failing so they stuck. After a few years at SAC I was able to bring up my GPA to a 3.49 before I applied.

Good luck man, I’m rooting for you! When I went to Fullerton College in 2010 to get the transcript/AR/Petition stuff cleared up I actually talked to a counselor at Fullerton College and told them my plans to transfer to UCLA. What they told me was that I didn’t have a chance in hell at UCLA and that they are looking for the “cream of the crop” not some kid who didn’t take things seriously at first than did well later because they realized that school is important. The counselor even said that CSUF was a long shot. So today I say **** them! LOL

To be honest it still seems a bit surreal that I went from a D student in HS, got kicked out of HS for poor grades, dropped out of college, drugs etc and ended up at UCLA. lol. So just work hard and you’ll get there. Slowly but surely. I can still remember that summer afternoon back in 09 when I first stepped onto SAC campus for my first class in 4-5 years and thinking “What am I getting myself into”. LOL

I got an F in English 67 and 1A. 67 is remedial anyways so i’m not really concerned with it. but 1A is, I retook it and got an A. I’m assuming they will only calculate the A, right?

@ Cyse00: I never petitioned to replace grades while at SAC so check to see if you need to petition the grade to replace the F. I don’t think it automatically does it. If it replaces the grade than you should be fine but make sure to ask for details whether the F will still affect your GPA.

Yeah ENG67 is remedial so it will be taken out of your GPA anyways but keep in mind that the application reviewers will still see that you got a F in 67 and 1A even though it may not affect your GPA. Did you fail these classes recently? If you failed them when you first started at SAC it won’t look as bad. For me, the failing grades that still showed on my transcript were 2-3 years old so it didn’t look as bad as if I had failed something recently.

Yea, I failed my very first 67 class back in '04. I failed 1A like 4 years ago. I’ve been going back for a year already resulting in straight A’s

@ Cyse00: Great than you shouldn’t be worried than.

@cyse - i forgot what the time length was but you can get grades erased from your record if theyre old enough :)

i got one of my classes taken off mine. this is only with failing classes of course.
talk to a counselor to see if you can get it done! gluck!

^^ I believe it’s 2 years in order to use academic renewal. You retook the classes anyways though right? The new grade should replace the old grade.

no i didnt haha, they were just some classes i took for fun in HS thinking id never go to mtsac. kickboxing and self defense.

my advisor, linda, told me the grade is erased from my records.
but UCs will see a “Z” and privates wont see anything…i think.
its been a while so i dont recall haha

^^LOL. The UC’s still see the F on the transcript but it will no longer affect your GPA. I had to get rid of a bunch of D’s and F’s before I applied.

Planning on taking Muay Thai or JKD for fun and easy units if I get a chance. LOL
