Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: 1. Didn’t show any DI whatsoever. Honestly, that’s probably what killed me. Beyond that, my “why Northwestern” essay wasn’t all that great. Frankly, I think the fact that I wasn’t feeling that positive about Northwestern showed. Congrats to those who got in, though!

General Comments: This decision was completely expected, so I wasn’t really phased by it at all. It would have been cool to have the opportunity to go to NU, but I visited in February and coming from Southern California I think it would have been too cold for me anyway! Northwestern is clearly a great school, and it’ll be even better with the quality of this year’s applicant pool. Since I already had my heart set on Cal Poly, I know I’ll be at a place where I’m happy next year. Good luck to all of you with your collegiate endeavors!

Reflection

Strengths: 36 on ACT, very passionate about my ECs, essay was great - my CA essay was about an activity that probably made me stand out. Not a sport or anything that could sway my decision or bring attention to the university, but it was funny and probably made me memorable because I doubt many teenagers do it. I also named Northwestern my college choice for National Merit, and they particularly like to compete to be one of the schools with the most (the NMSC is based in Evanston, for pete’s sake).
Weaknesses:
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My Why Northwestern? essay wasn’t great. Not that it was terrible, just that in this day and age it needs to be more than a standard “this is why I like your school” essay to stand out and mine didn’t. I just couldn’t find a way to put on paper everything I love about the school.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Accepted to UVA and UNC OOS, WashU, an elite UK school conditionally, and a few safeties. Applied to 17 colleges so I won’t name them all, but still waiting on Stanford, Yale, Penn, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt.

General Comments: Further proof that essays are what make an application, in my opinion. I didn’t expect to get in because of my essay and I have some great other options so I’m not upset. Congrats to everyone who was admitted!
