****OFFICIAL Northwestern CLASS OF 2020 Discussion Thread****

It is so, so, so hard to work on RD

So right now I have a 29 ACT score with a 4.2 GPA on a 4.2 scale. I have done numerous service activities in my community and in other communities. I play varsity volleyball for my highschool, am the boys basketball manager and the girls volleyball manager, am a member of student government and the Vice President of NHS, as well as some other extra curricular activities. I also applied ED. Was wondering if you guys thought I had a good shot. Don’t know what to think with such a low ACT Score. Thanks guys, and good luck.

@calicash

@MattMuzz definitely sounds like you are a viable candidate under ED (that’s what the 30-35% acceptance range usually encompasses)! :slight_smile:

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone had advice for writing the supplement essay? I’m a prospective English major here and having quite a bit of difficulty 1) trying not to be redundant since my Common App essay addresses why I’d like to major in English and 2) addressing what I can contribute to the school.

Any tips?

@Kasami I think the biggest thing is to not just have it to become a list of what NU has to offer, cause like they know that and you know that too SO show that you know what they offer and how that coincides with your interests!

Doing things like picking something random to talk about and integrating things about NU into it makes for something much more interesting, although remember that it is still a “Why NU” essay and you have to answer that. I saw a post in this threat or another about how someone analyzed a speech Obama gave at NU and then related that to qualities of NU he desired, etc. Stuff like that is much cooler than “y’all have a great english department” shit!!!

@artandscience123 well I fucked up on the why NU essay then, wrote about how interesting the whole-brain engineering concept fit in with how I like combining the creative and intuitive side of my mind with my logical and numbers side of my mind. Also wrote about the similarities between Evanston/Chicago and my hometown of Seattle.

My common app essay was about why I aim to create convenience and application in my daily life, and how math is a good catalyst for that.

They’re both pretty well written, if I do say so myself. I have a low GPA/class rank and slightly below average SAT scores.

Reading everyone here stress out with 4.0s and 2000+ SATs is unsettling.

@jason922 When I talked to people who had previously worked in admissions at NU, they said to do just what you did. Northwestern really loves to see people who are interested in the programs that they offer, and who are a good “fit” for the school.

@purplecat2020 does your source in admissions have any new info?? The anxiety builds daily.

@jason922 yeah that’s what I mean!! It’s important to show you know what they have to offer and relate it to yr interests-- I was just stating that in terms of general advice, don’t turn it into a list of why they’re a cool school. Your essay sounds rad!

@artandscience123 @petercsauer well thanks for the reassurances lol! Can’t believe theres still a week. Between AP calc and AP lit + wrestling, my days are feeling longer than usual. coupled with the extra week I need to wait before decisions come out, I’m so nervous haha

@CaliCash wow you give me so much hope lol. But same with @LuckyCollegeGirl question above, did you have any hooks that got you accepted? Or do you think you were lucky?

I finished a rough draft of my why Northwestern supplement. Does anyone want to edit essays? I really want to learn more about the school and what others put. PM if you want to swap!

@Demosthenes12 i’ll edit yours though I’m ED and have already submitted my app.

@jason922 Thanks! Good luck on ED

Any chance ED hears back before Tuesday?

@markcal22 I doubt it. When I spoke to them they said they would be reviewing application this whole week.

@bhwbqhfb3owi how did you contact them?

@petercsauer I called them.
