****OFFICIAL Northwestern CLASS OF 2020 Discussion Thread****

Got an email but was rejected. Oh well :frowning:

Would anyone who was accepted be willing to share their Why Northwestern essay with me? I’m just really curious and would like to contextualize my own essay which, unfortunately, didn’t do the trick.

@KASAMI - I don’t believe NU places that much weight on the Essay. I didn’t do it. Just went with the Comm App Essay. Chicago had many Essays… so there I can see a reason for concern.

@fboro16 -

Northwestern University

For people who got waitlisted, I read on a website that in 2015 1500 accepted the waitlist and 55 got in, making the admit rate 3.5%.

Accepted!!!

Sincerest congratulations to those accepted. I wasn’t lucky enough to part of that group, but well deserved, NW is a great school

@Flying2 No buddy. The interview is purely informational, and well it shows interest, it has little to no impact. Honestly college acceptance is a crap shoot.

Got in!

BTW, the math several pages back was off.
ED had ~5k applicants. 1000 admits (40% yield). Anecdotally, many weaker acceptances than those rejected RD.
So, ~35k total app - 5k ED apps= 30k RD apps. 3k-4k acceptances for 1000 attendees. 25%-33% yield.
RD acceptance rate about 10%-12%. But obviously, this varies by college, hooks, etc.

I am one who does believes NU protects/hedges their RD yield, and wouldn’t be surprised if many of the rejections/wait listed were amongst the strongest applications. At least at our high school (nationally highly ranked), appears to be the case along with the many examples here on cc.

Best of luck to everyone.
Wait listed NU McCormick , with many great options to still decide from.
35 ACT. 14 APs. (7 ad’s score 5. Reminder this May.) 300+ service hours. 7 athletic seasons, Varsity captain. President and exec multiple clubs. Strong essays and LoR. Visited 2x.

Got in!! Congrats to all who were accepted!

I’m boycotting checking until Saturday let’s see if I can do it

@yalebound2020 Did you get accepted? You didn’t do the essay? Wow…that’s pretty crazy.

Hi, am I the only one who hasn’t received the email about admission decisions? really worried now :frowning:

@jillz1011 Check your portal, most of us never got an email.

@matildak6 - Sounds awful! Good luck! :slight_smile:

As posted by another person

“To all that haven’t got an email yet, I found out I was accepted by logining into their portal with this link https://ugadmission.northwestern.edu/account/login
Put in your email and then choose forgot password and have them send you a pin. Good luck!”

I wonder why some got an email and others didn’t? I got one but I’m not gonna check
Three reasons:

  1. I have a more likely acceptance coming the next two days that will make me feel better before I check.
  2. I don’t really want to know yet
  3. Fun exercise in self control!!!

@yalebound2020 Then perhaps that’s what ended up getting me waitlisted at UChicago but rejected at Northwestern. If that’s the case, I mean it doesn’t bode well for future decisions considering how heavily U of C emphasizes the essays. Congrats on all your acceptances whatever they may be!

New here, thought I’d join the thread as I was accepted earlier today!!! Yay, my 1st major acceptance so I’m excited.

@Kasami I could not afford to visit so I scowered the YT, Twitter, and general NU website to find as much info as I could to stick in essay. Overall, a good one, I guess! Here it is:

When I was five, it was typical of me to introduce myself as a future doctor-lawyer-firefighter in space. Now passionate about biomedical research, programming and violin performance, it’s safe to say that my interests haven’t lost their eccentric touch. However, a problem lies within finding a university that fosters this, in a world that presumes quality education can’t coincide with interdisciplinary studies. Northwestern is devoid of such an attitude.

The College of Arts and Sciences not only allows, but embraces a spirit of exploration and discovery. As an aspiring researcher, I’m especially attracted to the world renown lab facilities and I plan on taking advantage of this uncommon undergraduate amenity by pursuing a research assistant position. However, Weinberg would allow me to grow not only as a biological scientist, but as a computer scientist too.

I plan to declare a minor in Computer Science. Through the comprehensive Weinberg curriculum, I will be able to expand my coding horizon beyond HTML, CSS and Java, learning widely used systems programming and scripting languages, such as C and Python. I’m excited to discover the many resources Northwestern holds to aid in my understanding of web and software development.

Beyond science and technology, Northwestern’s flexibility will nurture my musical talent. This is because non-major students are allowed to benefit from much that Bienen has to offer, such as a quiet place to practice in Regenstein Hall or a seat at a masterclass featuring Glenn Dicterow. I’d be afforded the opportunity to perform in two of Northwestern’s acclaimed orchestral groups, the Philharmonia or Baroque Music Ensemble.

It’s atypical for a university to cater to students with intellectual pursuits and hobbies that are as varied as mine, let along with such quality. This is why I am elated for my chance to become a Northwestern wildcat.
