Official Princeton ED Results- Class of 2011

No, Florida… I think the mail system is just inept.

Why do these forums always end up discussing URM advantages? There are so many other, more obvious evils in the admissions process…like sports recruiting haha.

I got mine yesterday (mailed on the 14th, I think).

LOL, I’ve kinda given up on my RD apps. Only thing keeping me going is that spark of hope.

sports recruiting isn’t evil lol… sportsmen are recruited for their talent.

I got my letter (deferral) today.

Did everyone’s say something along the lines of: Many qualified candidates, realize your hard work, like to see your senior year academic performance (Mid-Year Report), we realize you are disappointed, TTYL!.

Windslicer, I think they all said the same thing.

bump…this needs to be stickied

Better late than never, I suppose. So excited that I forgot to post when I got it December 18.

Stats:[ul][] Fee Waiver Used?: No
[] SAT I (by section): 800 CR, 800 Math, 760 Writing (two sittings)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Physics, 800 US Hist, 760 French, 760 Lit, 750 Math II (Ouch, esp b/c I was engineering applicant. I got a 780 on Nov SAT but I don’t know if they got it).
[] ACT: -
[] APs: All 5’s - Chemistry, Calc AB, Latin Vergil, French Language, US Hist, English Lit
[] IBs: -
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 4.4/4.0 (Not including freshman year, since Princeton doesn’t in their calculations)
[] Rank: School doesn’t rank, prolly top three in class of 180
[] Senior Yr Courseload: AP English Lang/Comp, AP Computer Science A, AP Physics B, AP Calculus BC, AP French Language, AP European Hist, Religion, History of Music (fall term only)
[] Number of Apps from Your School: 2 ED
[] Common or Princeton App? Princeton
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul][] ECs listed on app: Piano - sent in a CD, also passed ABRSM grade 8 (piano exam), had a few performances with decent youth orchestra, but nothing too major. Forensics (Speech Team) - this was prolly biggest thing for me. Vice-President as a Senior, Junior. Spent lots of time going to tournaments and practicing with team. Also had the coach write me a nice rec letter. I did well at the state level, but I’m not that great nationally… so I emphasized my dedication over my actual skill in it. School tennis team as well as winter tennis league - not good enough for Princeton team, but I think this helped me appear more well rounded. Cross Country - grades 9-11. Honor Committee - anti-cheating committee that I co-founded as a sophomore.
[] Job/Work Experience: Summer 2006 - Summer internship at the Army Research Lab for 8 weeks
[] Essays (subject and responses): I spent a huge amount of time on them, but I wasn’t entirely satisfied. Not great, but above decent I guess. I tried to make them as personal as possible and to really pour my personality into them. I wrote the influential person one about my brother. It was 300 words and actually my best essay imo. 500 words on an all-night conversation I had with friends from the forensics team. Engineering essay, which was the only slightly humorous essay I wrote. Additional essay describing why I loved forensics and how I would like to translate this into participating in theater at Princeton.
[] Teacher Recs: Should have been great… they really like me. My French teacher has told me that I’m “the best student he’s ever had.” I helped start up a Computer Science class to be taught by my Physics teacher, which he had been trying to do for years, so he really liked me too. Forensics coach should also have written a great letter
[] Counselor Rec: Great. It really helps to be at a private school. She knew me pretty well and was really supportive.
[] Interview (feel and general location): Fine, at a local hospital. The guy really liked me, etc etc but I think the interviews have no influence at all on the decision.
[] Hook (if any): I went to the Princeton Humanities Symposium in September. Since this is a recruiting tool of sorts, I do think it helps in the admissions process. Plus, I also tried to cast myself as a liberal arts-friendly engineer type, which I am.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul][] State or Country: Maryland
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): religious private, we get some into ivies every year, but HYPSM is fairly rare - maybe one a year on average.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Income Bracket: 100K-150K
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks: Other than the aforementioned, none.
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: Really well-rounded/too generic, hookless
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Not sure exactly. I had great grades and decent ECs, but then, so did so many other people. Maybe the Humanities Symposium. I also think forensics and piano (although the latter is again somewhat generic) helped me quite a bit.[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I really put all my eggs in the Princeton basket… my other apps were barely started. I feel soo relieved that the whole college rush and anxiety is finally over!

My daughter, a legacy, was deferred by Princeton. Very depressed after reading the stats of admitted students. Although her record was very good, her grades aren’t as perfect as those who were admitted ED. I fear that she is TOO well-rounded, and doesn’t have the so-called “hook”. Her SAT’s were CR750,Math700,English700. AP scores were a 5 in English and 4’s in 3 other subjects. Outstanding teacher recs, she’s a prefect at her boarding school in NJ. Perhaps too many other applicants from her school (at least 15 applied ED, and only 5 got in). Even though she has straight As in all AP-level classes this fall, her cumulative GPA is 3.8 (unweighted). She applied as an Engineering student…she is taking AP Calculus and AP Physics and excels in both fields, but she also is a great humanities student. I don’t know if the fact that she has never had an engineering-type summer job hampered her chances. She is very active in community service, drama, singing, music and is on a varsity team. Does she have a chance at regular admittance??

^this is somewhat like a lottery and nobody can predict chances. sure she has a chance (an even slightly better one than a normal RD applicant’s one)

regarding her lack of a hook: in my opinion, this does reduce her chances… I think they tend to admit people who excel in one particular field rather than well-rounded students… but you can never tell.
make sure to send in an additional essay (call the admission office beforehand, however). essays are the key, although lots of people on this board undermine their importance.

good luck.

I think your daughter has an excellent shot RD. Have her send something in highlighting any achievements she’s made since she applied ED, in part to keep the AO’s updated. Also, the fact that she is a legacy really really helps. Legacies have something like a 40% acceptance rate. ED will also work to her advantage. Her stats are good as well, and it’s important to note that the ED pool is very competitive. From what you say, her GPA is fine, and I think her chances at RD, while certainly not a shoe-in, are excellent.

Bump this thread.

ACCEPTED ED to Princeton

private school in california (very competitive, 20or more go to ives each year) this year 11 applied ED to Princeton, and 9 got in

SAT: 2110 (700 Lit, 710 R, 700 M)
SAT 11: Math 710, Liter 800, Us History 700

APs: Literature, Us History, Government, Latin, Calculus, Chemistry, Physics

5s on all APs

GPA: 3.667 UW…around 3.9 W, i think
Class rank: school does not rank

ECS:
crew national level (11th in nation), co prez school junior classical league, on board of califonria junior classical league, writing center peer tutor, relay for life, engineering, independent study greek

Awards:
national latin honor society, national latin maxima cum laude all four years, school departmental awards in both english and latin all four years awarded to best student in subject, national merit commended scholar, wrote 25 page paper on foreign policy and was published in important reveiw, won best engineering design at technology challenge (national level), rewarded for outstanding research during internship at stanford medical center developing drugs to inhibit tumor growth in cancer, also won school award for being “inquistive”, 2nd in CA for reading comprehension in Latin at AP Latin level, 10th in nation for reading comprehension in Latin at AP Latin, 1st in CA for Derivitives in Latin, 8th in nation for Derivitives in Latin, and won many regattas for crew

recs: excellent (both teacher and counselour, head of school insisited on writing one, engineering teacher also insisted writing one)

hook: legacy, and profound hearing loss

If you have profound hearing loss, how do you plan to hear the lectures? I don’t mean to be rude or anything. If you sit in the front of the class with a hearing aid, can you hear well enough?

NINE people got in out of 11???

wooow you school is amazing =O

but if that’s ED…and you said there are 20 students who go to Ivy per year…does that mean RD is not so good? or is your year particularly strong?

guppy, do you by any chance go to Menlo? I just know from Facebook that about 523814 people from Menlo are Princeton '11.

i was thinking exactly the same thing and I was about to post a thread on this since i saw on facebook that menlo (a Bay Area California private school) had 9 or 10 kids accepted early at Princeton.

First, guppy, I am assuming that you are from there…so how did that happen?!? Were all the kids truly outstanding?? Its amazing, congratulations!

And to everyone else, do you think this will now limit the number of kids that are going to be accepted into Princeton from the Bay Area since 9 made it from one school?!?!

This isn’t big in comparison, but 4 kids from a school in my area got in ED.

Same here.
Some rich, private school in Houston had a *huge *Ivy turnout.

Well I’m sure there are a lot of rich, private schools in Houston with a huge Ivy turnout.

But one that I know of haha
