Official PSAT Score Thread

That was probably my speculation or somebody else’s. Anyways, the Commended cutoff should give everybody a good indication what the cutoffs are. Last year it was 201. If it goes down to 199 or 200 (which it has been in the past; every other year except for last year), I should be fine (this will probably mean Illinois’ will go down one or two as well). If it remains at 201, I still have a chance, and if it goes up, I’m organizing a mob and going to the college board’s offices. Lol. Just kidding. I will be ****ed off, though.

62V, 76M, 80W. = 218
sophomore.
i can’t read.

my bro hasn’t received his scores yet.

I’m sure all the people saying “the cut off for this year is…” meant the cut off for the 99th percentile, which IS NOT the same as the cut off for Semifinalists (there are plenty of 98% who get in Semifinalists, i hear)
For WI, 99% cut off was 212, and the cut off for semifinalists is usually 209~211.
I got a 210… Hopefully i’ll be a seminifinalist

so i finally got my scores today…228 (71 V, 80 M, 77 W). i think the cutoff for florida has been 214 for the past 2 years

My guidance counselor said it was an unusually hard year, so I should be good for semis with my 223.

What do you mean by an unusually hard year? Were the curves on the PSAT’s hard? Will the cutoffs be hard? I sure hope its the first one.

they added more reading comprehension and took out analogies, which is bad for me. (i can’t analyze passages for anything.) Also, the math is slightly more difficult, but students shouldn’t have much trouble with that, as long as they’re enrolled in algebra 2.

The scores were unusually low she said, particularily in the CR section. That should equate to lower cutoffs. I don’t think NJ has ever been above 223, so I should be safe. Does anyone know a website that has prior years cuts for semifinals?

so… in new jersey, if i got a 229 do i definitely qualify for semi? i thought i did but when i asked my guidance counselor he said he wouldn’t know

gardenstategirl, counselors might not know “officially”, but the cutoff has been about the same for the past few years, and with a 229, you should get semi.

first of all, can we even compare this year’s scores with last years cutoff? The test did go through a lot of change. Maybe the cutoff score will be drastically different? (lower = better for me)

If you have a 229 you are a semi-finalist. No matter what state you’re from. Period. =P

Sophomore, 73 v, 66 m, 72 w.

211 total. Boo. The sad thing is, I’m the second highest scorer in my year. Boooo.

I’ll be the only person with the Horrible scores… here it goes!!!

62 CR
68 M
49 W!!! YES!! lol…

so you guys need to stop complaining… GEEZ!!! and if you dont make the NMSQT thingermerbob… u should be over it…

in psat guide booklet it says that the cutoff forcommended should be 96 percentile.so i guess 199+ should be commended. i sure hope so cause i gota 200!! lol

My sister got a 222 (78/67/77), so she’s definitely a Semifinalist in our state…

Is the cutoff for commended announced at the same time as the cutoff for semifinalist?

BTW, according to the collegeboard website, semifinalist cutoffs for the class of 2006 will be announced in September of 2005. Why it takes a year for them to calculate, beats me.

Yeah, Jimmy, I don’t understand why they drag it out so long either. It wasn’t so bad waiting for a year with my first son, whose score was high enough to definitely qualify him for semi, so we were basically just waiting for it to be “official.” But my middle son (junior) just got his score, and it’s right on the “bubble” for our state. Gonna be a lo-o-o-o-o-ong wait…
Anybody know why they don’t notify semi’s any sooner?

I’m curious about the long wait as well. My daughter scored 218 (Texas) and we think she is okay for semi… but would be nice if it were official. Btw, our counselors also seem to believe the cutoffs will drop due to the changes (and lower scores) in critical reading.

Can someone explain the process after a student is notified they are a semifinalist? I assume a student is required to submit more information to compete for finalist standing, but is this something that the school counselor explains to them? Are the PSAT scores a major factor in determining who will become a finalist, or does the National Merit Corp look more to the SAT scores?

Our school’s scores were delivered late (the day after Christmas break started) and there really hasn’t been an opportunity for the counselors to meet with the kids and explain how the competition works.
