the two probably were in the writing section because the math curve and the cr curve were very unforgiving. ah, evil ets

You’re right, the math and cr curves are quite unforgiving . . . .

Could anyone tell me how a 219 holds up in FL? Usually the cut off for semis is 213 or 214. Should I be pretty safe?

You should be just fine, curves don’t really jump more than one or two pts.
of course this is a whole new test, we’ll all find out in april then. =[

thanks :)

lol, yeah, actually don’t we find out about semis in september? I thought April was when we find out if we’re in the top 55,000. That should be anyone over 200 or so though right? So, I’m not worrying about that. Thanks again.

Yep, you’re right.

hi, I got a 221 (R: 66, M: 80, W: 75), live in florida, have a 4.00 uw gpa, great teacher recs, 4.86 w gpa, full ip diploma candidate. Do i have good chances of becoming finalist and/or winning any scholarships?

I think that you also need to have some extracurriculars to have a better chance of becoming finalist/scholar. The rest is good enough though.

My cousin in Evanston Il doesn’t have his yet.I am in Texas and have had it for at least 5 or 6 weeks.

Yes, some schools hand them out later than others. I got mine a few days ago. Maybe your cousin should check with the school guidance counselor though.

any schools not giving out psat scores at this time need to be blown up

A surprising number of posters on this board claim to have received 240. Sure…Less than 1 out of 20,000 test takers got a 240. That’s a few hundred nationwide. Do they all read this lame board? I think not.

Get a life.

man on fire, I personally know 3 students who scored 240 on the PSAT this year. I know 2 who scored 240 in 2002. I also know 2 students who scored a 36 on the ACT and 3 students who scored a 1600 on the SAT during the last year (all different testing dates). Add in the students I know who have scored this high in the past 3 years and it’s a lot of kids. This is at a public school in a state with a NM cut-off that is usually between 211 and 214. I don’t find it hard to believe that students on CC scored a 240.

When do we become officially commended? I scored a 202 (96th percentile), which people keep telling me definitely qualifies for commended. I was nominated for a local scolarship where I’m competing against 4 other people, and I really want to put down that I qualified for national merit commended. I haven’t received a letter or anything yet that officially states that I am. What do you guys think I should do?

According to NM website, semifinalists are notified in early September 2005 and commended students are notified in late September 2005. When do you have to turn in the scholarship application?

In a few weeks…lol

manonfire, theres three people here at troy with 240.

Perhaps, if recommendation letters are requested with your scholarship application, a teacher or counselor could cleverly work in what an outstanding job you did on the PSAT and that you will be commended in the fall. Just an idea.

That’s an excellent idea. However, this doesn’t ask for letter reccomendations- you just post your stats and write a couple of mini essays of 100 words or less. However, this also means I don’t have much of a chance to tell about myself, and have to depend more heavily on stats than I would on other scholarships.

This is depressing!! I got my scores, well, technically my school hasn’t handed them out yet, but i got my scores before christmas, and I was pretty happy with them. I discover this site last night, discover this thread today, and now i realize my scores aren’t really that great…216, with my strongpoint being math and only getting a 76, I look at all the 80s and wonder what i did wrong.

Can someone explain how exactly psats work, i know i’m a sophomore this year, so i can’t qualify for national merit scholar, but like people are talking about cutoff points for different states, and unforgiving curves (which i do understand, but still), and am i hopeless in persueing a math/science major at like an ivy college haveing not scored perfect on the math?
