98th percentile overall. fun times.

State cutoffs are not known at this time. I believe an earlier post lists prior year cutoffs as a guide as to what to expect. Also, I have heard that the cutoffs are expected to be a point or two lower than last year due to the changes in the Critical Reading section of the exam. But nothing is certain until Fall 2005 when those who are Commended or are Semi-Finalist are notified.

The CR passages were quite obtuse.

The ethnic passage was too bad to have been drawn from a real writer. Wordy, passive voice, everything you would lose points for on the essay.

No wonder the threshold may be lowered.

It’s also a sign that ETS is going to use the supposedly neutral shift to the New CR to disinflate the 1994 score recentering.

I got a 240 last year and a 227 the year before that as a sophy.

Yay! Finally the scores arrived! I got 228: 73, 80, 75. I’m a sophomore…as a freshman I got 217: 72 71 74. I just hope I can make another 10 plus point jump next year for NMS! :)

What is the national acheivement cutoff usually around. Hopefully lower than a 193!

Is 55,000 the same as last year? I thought last year it was 50,000.

i probably doubt it, the lowest i saw in any state (kidna rural places) was a 203

dang, i wish i lived there!

Isn’t National Achievement usually in the high 180s to mid 190s and National Hispanic somewhere in the 180s?

Somebody posted awhile ago that if PSATs are commended or higher, the College Board sends you a letter in April telling you they will send those scores to two colleges of your choice. The poster had said “choose wisely…” My question: does the college board really do this and do colleges really care about the PSAT? Why does it matter which schools you chose?

I know this: some colleges offer merit scholarships and some do not. Most of those who do offer scholarships to National Merit finalists require the student to list their college as the student’s first choice.

We are very confused as to what to do ourselves. My daughter is interested in Baylor, which has huge scholarships for NMF and University of Texas & Rice, with pretty respectable scholarships for NMF and NHS as well. But she is also interested in applying to Harvard (reach). She is interested in biology/pre-med and all of these colleges offer outstanding programs.

Our questions are this…do we even bother to list Harvard since they don’t offer merit scholarships? Will scholarship offers from Texas and Rice really evaporate if she lists Baylor as her first choice?

Help would be appreciated!!

i’m curious about this too. i applying to hyp among my first choices, but those are reaches and i doubt they regard NMS as a remarkable achievement. I saw that university of chicago, one of my major interests, offered scholarships. I suppose that when they ask you to name your first choice college, a little white lie is excusable in order to potentially qualify for scholarship.
i think i’ll name U of C as my first choice, and hope for the best. I don’t think they give a free ride to every NMS they admit…only about 50 applicants or so. Still a long shot.

Is there a list of schools that offer scholarships based on NMS or do I have to look at every school individually?

To find schools which offer scholarships, check the pamphlet you received when you signed up for the PSAT. You’ll need to check the school’s websites, though, to find out just how much money they award finalists.

Realize that if you name a college as your first choice and they offer you the scholarship, if you turn the scholarship down, it’s unlikely you’ll get another NMS offer. Thus, make sure that your “first choice” is a college you’d happily attend if you get the $.

Would 219 in FL be enough for semis? For the past few years it’s been 213 or 214. And, does anyone know if your PSAT score is used in the other stages (semis to finalists, finalists to scholars)?

I STILL haven’t gotten my score for this year, but here are the ones I had last year (sophomore): 73V, 69M, 74WS Selection index of 216, 99 percentile

I live in Indiana.

I asked my counselor yesterday when we’d get our scores back; he said next week. I got a tease, though. 80 on the writing skills…yippee!

BTW…I love this board; it’s been very informative.

I have a question, too. What is the lowest score that Harvard’s Summer Camp considers good?

Later,
Erin-Michelle

Gotta add something else
My mom was a national merit finalist, so waiting for the results is torture because I want to live up to the same standards.

my friend just got his scores. no mistakes whatsover. 240. 99%

I think I missed 3 questions on my 240. 2 in one section, actually (I can’t remember which).
