I live in Puerto Rico and I got an 198 selection index. Do you think that merits to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program? Don’t I get an advantage over other people that have English as their primary language, whereas Spanish is my main language, but I still achieved a 95 percentile?

The suspense is keeping me up at night… my school doesn’t get our scores until sometime in January.
However, I got an application for the Telluride Association summer programs without asking for it, so I take that as a good sign?

I got cocky and screwed up the math…I can fix that up for the real thing. CR was so ambiguous, I probably couldn’t have done better than I did…sigh.

By the way GenericName, that is a good sign that you got the TASP application. That means that either you scored in the top 1 or 2% or some teacher nominated you.

Generic Name, I’m from MN and my teacher said it’s been 214 but this year it’s likely going to be 216.

Not to make you feel bad, but I don’t know if the TASP app has much to do with your PSAT score. I got NMSF for MN (in the 220s) and haven’t gotten ANY college mail yet, much less any apps for any programs. Obviously, I could be wrong, though.

how do you know the cutoff is 213? In an earlier post you said that the cutoffs are released August 2006. I’m fairly sure that the cutoff for Minnesota will be 216-217, not 213.

I took the PSAT in 2003 as a sophomore and then in 2004 as a junior. I don’t remember my breakdown, but sophomore year I got a 200 and junior year I got a 217. Not much of an improvement, but I remember that the PSAT my junior year was 1 week after the SAT, and I really did not care all that much about it. Thinking back on it, I think I could have done better.

It’s okay, though, since 217 was the cutoff for California and I made semi-finalist. ^^

I missed 1 medium critical reading question, 1 easy writing skills question, and 1 hard writing skills question.

When I was a Sophomore I scored a 214 selection index. I am satisfied with my improvement of 20 points. Will my 234 make me a National Merit Finalist?

If you got invited into the TASP summer programs, into doesn’t necessarily mean that you were between the top 1 or 2 percent of the top scorers. I got 95 percentile, and 198, but since I’m from Puerto Rico, I got invited to the program. They also consider where you live and recommendations from teachers or counselors.

Dude, Unmoved_Cross, you are so flipping above the cutoff it’s not even funny. The cutoff is like 210-220, depending on what state you live in, but a 234 is up in the stratosphere somewhere.

You’re a lock for semifinalist, but becoming a finalist has nothing to do with PSAT score. In order to become a finalist, you have to submit stuff that you would need for a college app, like SAT score, essays, recommendations, and a transcript. That happens next year.

The cutoff for the class of 2007 will be 215-216, but crashingwaves was talking about for this year (class of 2006) whose cutoff was announced in August 2005.

Er…no…why would it be since you guys already know your scores/got your scores last year? It’s for the students that took the PSAT in 2005 (class of 2007, 2008, and some 2009ers).

Does anyone know whether international students get PSAT score recognition too? like…“hey you’re a semi finalist, but you don’t get to compete anymore” .
