*OFFICIAL PSAT THREAD 2014 (US)*

Does anyone have the 2012 link for understanding your scores?

@palm12341 Thanks so much for the method of determining score. Congrats to all that did well! I wish I had found this board sooner to realize the importance of preparing for it as it looks like my son may just make it or will miss by one point. Our area focuses heavily on the ACT so there was not a lot of info from school on PSAT prep.

Anyone in NC receive their scores? I am homeschooled and it should come directly to my house.

Oops, I meant cutoff, not the curve.

What is Palm’s method?

My sister got a 208 in Missouri, what do you think her chances are? I’m a sophomore so I don’t care much, but a got a 209 so I’m pretty confident for next year.

Hi everyone.
I just found a time-consuming-yet-possible way to get your scores for the 2014 test, provided you have a mycollegequickstart account with 2013 scores in it already.

  1. Go to <a href=“Student Score Reports”>Student Score Reports; and sign in.
  2. Go to <a href=“Student Score Reports”>Student Score Reports;
This page will show you the first question and will say at the top if you got it right or wrong.
  3. Change the ‘1’ at the end of the url to ‘2’ and repeat, until you have gone through all the CR questions.
  4. Repeat steps 2-3 but with <a href=“Student Score Reports”>Student Score Reports; for math and <a href=“Student Score Reports”>Student Score Reports; for writing.
  5. Count how many you got wrong and then calculate your score with the curve from <a href=“Understanding PSAT/NMSQT Scores - SAT Suite”>https://www.collegeboard.org/pdf/psat/understanding-psat-nmsqt-scores-guide_0.pdf</a></p>

That’s what Palm’s Method was

You don’t need a mycollegequickstart account, just a College Board account.

Guys I am pretty safe for NM, but if only 2500 peeps get a scholarship 0f 2500(not that much) why is it truly important, is it just for recognition? Does anybody know if University of Michigan gives any scholarship for NM or if it affects their acceptance rate at all?

The National Merit Corporation only gives a limited number of (small) scholarships but companies and universities give many more. You can see last year’s list here: http://www.nationalmerit.org/student_guide.pdf</a>. Some universities will automatically offer you scholarships of a certain amount based on the score alone (of course, you have to be accepted to the school). The school may not call the full amount a National Merit Scholarship but the whole package can be a decent amount. Now, the lottery schools don’t do this. Most or at least many of their applicants have NM status and great stats, and if they get accepted they are likely to attend, so they don’t need to entice them with merit scholarships. Less competitive schools would love to up their average incoming class stats by recruiting students who test well (and who usually have strong g.p.a.'s too). This link might be stripped, but some schools offer full tuition: <a href=“College Essay Writing Service [Papers For Sale] - ■■■■■■■■■■■■■”>College Essay Writing Service [Papers For Sale] - ■■■■■■■■■■■■■. For those students who need the money this is a great opportunity! For those who don’t need the big money, or who don’t qualify for need-based aid it is an achievement that might help admissions (except at lottery schools) and any money that offsets loans is nothing to sneeze at.

I should add that not making National Merit is by no means a terrible thing – it’s only a tiny piece of a portfolio and there are many many other ways to earn admission and scholarships.

would you consider U of M a lottery school or is that reserved for the absurd policies of HPY, Cornell, brown etc.

@aaajones‌ your profile picture is perfection

Do you guys think the cutoff score for semifinalist would go up or down?

@anxxghost I wouldn’t call UMich a lottery school. They only accept about 1/3 of applicants, though, and it is tougher if you are out of state. It’s a fine school and very much in demand judging from last year’s CC parent’s discussions. You’d have to ask on the U Michigan threads if they award National Merit – so far my web searching suggests they don’t, but they do have merit aid in general.

@jacob9874 From what I’ve been hearing, it might go down but not significantly. Looking at the charts, most states went up last year, so there’s a good chance it will drop again this year, but it really depends on each state individually

is My College QuickStart down?
