With the Early Decision applicants being notified of their decision, I figured it would be a good time to make a thread for the regular decision pool for the Northwestern University class of 2016.

Whether it’s students that were deferred via Early Decision, or applying to Northwestern for the first time, we will use this thread for discussion about the admissions process and Northwestern as a whole.

I am applying to the Medill School of Journalism, and hoping for the best!

Question- Is anyone aware if NU actually heavily weighs essays, supplemenet, recommendations, etc?? Or if your academic profile doesn’t meet the mark, you are screwed?

Northwestern really looks at all parts of your application equally and holistically. You need all parts of your application to be strong to remain as a competitive candidate.

Since your grades and recs are basically set by now, you can only really worry about essays in the college app process. I think that’s why some people think essays are more important than the others but all other parts of your app are equally important!
Just because you have good essays, if you don’t have the grades to support it, you are not as competitive of a candidate.

One thing that I like to mention - Northwestern is big on is demonstrated interest! A lot of people who I knew that took the summer program (CTD) at Northwestern made it in. (personal experience though) So definitely plan to at least go to the campus tour and write a good, well thought supplement essay that really shows your interest!
