Hey, I am planning on applying to the Rice/Baylor program. Any tips for new applicants? Thank you!

so in the past couple of years (i know for sure 2005) decisions for rice/baylor came out on the tuesday after the interviews. but i remember dr. michael saying something about how they’ll notify us by wednesday or thursday of this week? do you guys remember that too? any news yet?

Has Anyone Heard Anything Yet???

i called yesterday(?) and they said they hadn’t made a decision yet, but we’d be notified immediately once they did…
so yeah, still waiting:P

Emails were sent out at 10:30 CT this morning, so everyone who was accepted in the first round should have heard by now.

i’m going to rice now! excited

good job all of you.

Question all you Rice Owl(ians)
Was the interview easy or difficult in your opinion?
and would medical research/voulteerism be a big plus on your college resume?
Thanks Guys!
PS. I posted my High School stats somewhere check my post and see if i have a chance guys!

PS. what did some you guys write about in the essay for rice and rice/baylor?

As far as the interviews go, it really depends on how you handle interviews in general. If you are OK with being relaxed and conversational, you will be fine. The hardest part for me was understanding the professor who interviewed me, who had a heavy Russian/Slavic accent, and I was trying very hard to understand her questions without sounding like I was having trouble.

Volunteerism is emphasized. My first interviewer even inquired further into the number of hours I had dedicated to volunteering to make sure they were “comparable” to other applicants. Medical research is great if you have it, but not detrimental if you don’t. An interest in medicine, though, is crucial (obviously). Most of the conversation in the interview concerned medicine, patient-doctor interactions, your personal goals, etc…

Most of my essays were not about medicine. For Rice I wrote about art and music, and on one of my Rice/Baylor interviews I wrote about baseball. The only essays I wrote about medicine and bioengineering were on the ones where they directly asked us about our educational goals.

is it true that next year we can only apply for Rice/Baylor if we apply Rice ED? and get accepted?

That I don’t know. I did notice that ID is not going to be an option next year, but I can’t say how that will affect Rice/Baylor. You’ll have to call the admissions office to find out (or do some searching around on the website).

Do they really look at SAT score? I have around a 1600 SAT score this year but it will way improve by junior year. My GPA is fantastic and my Class rank is in the top 5% of my class. References - Doctors, Nurses, and Teachers i have worked with in the hospital and during my clinical rotation.
Also i took Clinical - a program offered in my school where you get hands on experience working with patients and in hospitals with doctors. In this program you can get CNA Certificiation, Pharm Tech. Certification, etc. Is this a big plus point on my resume?
Im taking lots of AP/Pre-Ap/IB Classes ( 6 out of 7 classes are AP). Just wanted to know whats my chances!
Hows life on campus? how are the dorms? Is their alot of partying/drinking in the dorms? I really dont want to go to a campus where theirs alot of partiers/drinkers because ive seen some of my relatives drop out of University of Houston and University of Texas at Austin due to big time partying and over alcohol abuse in college campus.

^1600/2400?

yes i know its not “up to standards” but im definately sure i can get my SAT score up to a 2000 by end of Junior year!

I think for Rice/Baylor, realistically, you need 2300+ or at least in that range

If kunnell is a URM, perhaps the 2000 might be ok. Otherwise, I am inclined to agree withwestcoastlove.

URM does help, but I don’t think it’s enough to bump you up 300+ pts on the SAT
especially since Rice/Baylor EXTREMELY competitive and only has 20 spots. I am not sure if the admissions officers are inclined to give a student a certain spot just because he/she is URM.

sweet.
but i just saw someone (BestBuy i think) he got a 1540 on his SAT and got accepted into Rice/Baylor ( this is the time when SAT score was out of 2400).
Weird but ok whats the URM?

URM stands for Underrespresented Minority
hmm what did the person have for ECs?
I do have to say that I am a little jealous :)
