Dont be depressed. I think you have a really good shot at Vandy, Cornell and all the LACs. And you never know with the Ivies, all it takes is for one adcom to love your essay and advocate for you. I also think that the waitlists will be used really heavily this year so there is hope. Good luck!

ACT:35
GPA: 3.9x uw, 4.2x weighted
Rank: 1-4/150 (school doesn’t disclose anything other than deciles before graduation, so not sure); likely the second hardest class load in the short history of the school.

Subjective:
Essays: ??
Teacher Recs: unread, but should be very strong.
Counselor Rec: Did not read, but again should have been very strong.

School Type: Private, starting to get successful in top college placements

Other Factors: will graduate with around 12 AP classes, all with 4 or greater test scores; AP bio/chem/physics; BC Calc/multivariable/differential equations . . .

Extracurriculars: Sr class pres, avid solo weightlifter (subject of at least one essay), multiple state medals in Science Olympiad beginning in freshman year, sports.

Thoughts: A HUGE relief. We were afraid that his SAT Math II would kill him. Perhaps Rice looked at the year and a half gap between his last precalc class and the test and discounted the score a bit? Subject to a second campus visit, he’ll likely attend–even though there’s no snow in Houston.
