Apparently I am too excited to type… Sorry for any typos guys since I’m typing on my phone… Anyways thank you all for being such a wonderful support so far! :)

Congrats emalo and ccuser!!!

Thanks Nostalgia!!

Hey guys! I want to ask that is it possible to transfer to Cornell from a California CC? Is high school diploma required? I leave high school after sophomore year and enters a CC. My high school course load is really intense, and I have a high school GPA of 3.9+. My college GPA is also 3.9+ as well, and I’m applying for 2014 fall… any chance to get in?

Thanks nostalgia!!! I wish you the best!!!

Jason: I truly believe it’s all about fit!

Thanks! What courses should I take then? because we don’t have a transfer agreement with Cornell…

Hi Jason, each school has particular requirements. You could research the school website for more information about pre-reqs.

So, I’m wondering what my chances are of getting into Cornell for a second Bachelor’s.

I have a BA in philosophy from UCSB:

UCSB GPA: 3.58
Courses: I got As in chemistry, a B and a B+ in my calc. courses (didn’t put in the work I should have), but mostly this lower GPA is due to some general ed courses like music and asian studies.

I also have an MA in philosophy from SFSU (it’s ranked in the top ten terminal MA programs via the philosophical gourmet report).

SFSU GPA: 3.95.

Courses: all philosophy, except for some creative writing courses. I took a lot of logic though, and courses like philosophy of quantum mechanics.

I also wrote a sixty-five page thesis on the nature of reasons for my MA, but there wasn’t anywhere on the application where I could upload an appropriate writing sample.

Other stuff that might be relevant: (1) I taught critical thinking at SFSU for two semesters. (2) I have volunteer experience abroad, (3) I’m currently working as an instructional aide for students with disabilities.

So, since they allow you to choose three majors, I have them listed in this order: (a) mathematics, (b) education, (c) psychology. However, I made it clear my stated intent was to get a BA in math, and then an MA, after which I will do the Math for America program and teach in a low income neighborhood.

What I’m worried about is the fact I have only two calc. courses, with mediocre grades in them, and this doesn’t reflect my potential to do well in math at all. I mentioned this in the app, but I’m not sure if they’ll be convinced. I also don’t want to wait another year and take math classes, so I’m going to go somewhere in the fall, hopefully Cornell.

zaross1. I knew someone who applied to Cornell to earn a second bachelors degree. He said Cornell rejected him because they do not accept transfer students who have already earned a bachelors degree. If I were you, I would contact admissions directly, to ascertain whether this is true…or not. Good Luck!

I hope that’s not the case. Usually schools that don’t accept second bachelor’s make that clear on their transfer FAQ page. I’ll send an email to double check though. I’d hate to pay the application fee only to find out I’m not even eligible to attend.

Okay here is what it says in the catalogue “Students who hold a baccalaureate degree from another regionally accredited college or university, and who wish to obtain another baccalaureate degree must:
Meet admission requirements;
Complete at least eight term credits in Cornell College campus-based programs, including any general college requirements which were not completed for the first baccalaureate degree (see Index. General Requirements for Degree Programs);
Complete the major requirements, including resident and/or upper-division requirements, for the second degree; and
Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 at Cornell College in order to graduate.”

However, elsewhere on the site is says students are not eligible for a second bachelors. I’m wondering if what this means is (a) you can’t get two BAs from Cornell, or (b) some of the colleges don’t accept students who already have a BA.

You should be fine

zaross1. Are you applying to Cornell College, or to Cornell University?

Zaross1, Based on the info on Cornell’s website, I think you may be confusing Cornell College in Iowa with Cornell University in New York.
http://admissions.cornell.edu/faq/am-i-able-enroll-cornell-second-bachelor’s-degree
It says on Cornell University’s website that you may not earn a second bachelors degree.

Hi guys! I was reading this forum yesterday and it really helped a lot, thanks! An update is that I received my results from Cornell SHA at 12.46pm pacific time (3.46pm eastern).I was wondering if @Akawasaki has heard anything from Cornell yet? Also, best of luck to those who are yet to receive their results! :)

Hi nata123456 are you admitted too? Huge congrats then!! :)

I got in! it feels unreal.

Anyone has heard from ILR?

Hey, guys! Congrats on your recent acceptances! Please believe me when I say that I am truly happy for you all! Would you mind to post your academic credentials? Forgive me if I asked to abruptly. :)

Thanks Chris. I’ll post my stats for the future applicants. Even though I am writing as an SHA applicant but the info I’m sharing should apply to an applicant to any type of school because it’s the matter of demonstrating your “fit” and proving that you belong to a certain school by showing relevant records/experience.

Accepted to SHA
From top 50 national university. GPA 3.89

I am a Japanese citizen but I spent half of my life in China. Attended an international school high school - my high school grades were pretty horrible because I couldnt speak English until 10th grade. I’m not even gonna post my SAT scores here because it’ll just be embarrassing lol

Significant ECs:
I organized a charity concert completely outside of school and by myself in China, which involved 12 different international schools, raised 3000USD and donated to an orphanage.
Leader/logistic coordinator of the international student orientation at my current uni.
2 hotel interns during summer.
Baseball team, jazz band, university choir etc.

Essays:
Cornell is the only school I applied and I explained that I strongly believe I can succeed in the hospitality industry; I talked about how my creativity extends my quality of hospitality.

I applied last year and got rejected. It was because I was just saying how much I love the hospitality industry but not proving it. To prove it I applied for hotel internships and engaged in other campus activities that were relative to what I wanted to talk about in the essays.

Hope this helps. Good luck on those who are still waiting. To those who got rejected this year I want you guys to remember one thing: if you don’t succeed at first, fight, fight, and fight again. Trust me, one day, you will be happy about all the struggles and hard works. You’ve got my best wishes.
