Official Stanford SCEA 2017 Applicants' Discussion Thread

I definitely think that this is the hook Stanford wants:

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120715222542/spongebob/images/c/c4/Patchy_The_Pirate.jpg

Being hooked is specifically urm/legacy/firstgen. That is the definition of hook. Although there are not reserved spots for them, their applications have a “boost” that helps adcoms see their applications in a different light. I am trying to be very delicate with my wording. If two applicants are being compared, and they are virtually identical, a hooked applicant would have a higher chance of getting accepted. You cannot compare having great talents to having a hook. A hook is something you cannot control. You are basically disregarding the importance of urm/firstgen/legacy in admissions, which is honestly quite disgraceful. These hooks are especially significant at an upper echelon school, like stanford.

I check up on this page everyday after school and am so sad when I reach the end of it haha you guys are all so entertaining! I really hope the decision comes out tomorrow because I have not been able to focus on anything but Stanford and I have finals next week which is not good!

Statlanta, I agree. I do think that recruited athlete is a psuedo-hook. Like, it’s something that the student earns, but it is also an admissions boost almost unparalleled by anything else. So, I think it is worth adding to the category, maybe with an asterisk.

Also, possibly the biggest hook is developmental admit i.e. a student born into a very rich family that is willing to drop a few million bucks to build a new wing somewhere.

For example:

Bob is a hook because he has cured cancer and is black.

Eduardo is a hook because he has cured AIDS and is latino.

Lila is a hook because she built a nuclear power plant in her basement and is native american.

Tom is a hook because he is white.

****ing Stanford.

In other news, I watched the latest episode of 90210. Gotta live a drama-filled life vicariously!

Guys, it’s not going to be any day but Friday…

Kill my dreams why don’t you? Jk

Hooks do have an advantage. That is a fact. Diversity is a plus and something colleges want. While there may not a fixed quota, I’m sure there are approximate proportions they do want. I agree that everyone is “hooked” in a way, but that would be a useless construct for chance threads and such.

Yeh, that damn asian bias- 4x the admit rate of everyone else.

I kid. I kid. It’s only because they are our superior overlords, I know.

I guess, I concede, all your arguments make lots of sense. Sorry for bringing negativity in, I just get frustrated by the general talk of “hooks” “URMS” because I go to competitive public in Texas, so usually when those conversations start it usually veers off into racism and preppy rich kids whining about being rich.

Not a problem haha, perfectly understandable. We’re all stressed here too.

Ahhhhhh…
At this rate, if Stanford doesn’t release the results soon, we are gonna have some major problems here XD

My friends, we are the top 1% in academics, extracurriculars, and sports. Everyone here possesses some special talent that will make the world a better place. However, we are not under complete control of our futures. All of us have differing stats, whether it be SAT scores, class rank, EC’s, essays, GPA, etc., but we all share a common similarity: all of us are at the mercy of the Stanford admissions officers. These men and women have been in frantic action for the past month and a half, checking applications to see exactly who is worthy of acceptance to Leland Stanford Jr. University. While we may not all get into Stanford, the journey we have embarked on and the experiences we have developed in our time together has been unforgettable to me. The playlists, the nerves, the hype, everything has been an unbelievable whirlwind of hopes, dreams, and ambitions that have frayed our ability to study and focus on our present tasks. The select few that get into Stanford are the elite: exceptional students who are bound to be our nation’s greatest leaders in the near future. The rest of us need not fret; we too are talented individuals who will definitely get into great schools. So the moral I am trying to instill is, don’t worry if Stanford doesn’t accept you. We are all special human beings, capable of creating new technologies and ideas to create world peace, cure cancer, explore the reaches of outer space, end poverty, and solve the mysteries of the human mind. I will not worry if I don’t get into Stanford, I am just happy to say that a year from now, I will be at a place where I can explore my self-interests, gain new insight about myself and the world around me, and form everlasting relationships with my peers in the best four years of my life. Oh the places we will go! Hopefully, it will be Stanford, but we are all destined for greatness my friends.

Yah haha I’ve noticed :stuck_out_tongue: finalssssss. Also, I should add that doesnt mean people from Texas are racist either :stuck_out_tongue: It’s just a very conservative (bleck) community down here, the crazy ones.

Rough. I remember my life as a white preppy kid in Texas, even after living as a white preppy kid in the Bronx I wouldn’t go back to that. I ain’t trading my niggas and dope for no white **** today.
