@trivial: lol now that you mention it, 12/12/12 seems legit

It’s going to be tomorrow guys my dad is Leland Stanford and he told me

By strong hooked applicants, I mean applicants with outstanding objectives and such. That says nothing itself about whether or not the hook impacts the strength. Strong applicants are not a huge number, and hooked applicants are not a huge number, so clearly strong hooked applicants are an even SMALLER number.

For instance, in the general population, I believe there were about… 700? perfect ACTs. Obviously a perfect ACT isn’t a prerequisite for Stanford in any way, but it makes for a more dramatic example.

1.5% of Americans are, shall we say, Native American.

Then, ASSUMING INDEPENDENCE OF THE HOOK FACTOR AND PERFORMANCE, there are 11 (I think it was 700 something, not just 700) perfect ACTs which are Native American.

Hence, not a lot.

I fail to see how my comment was in any way offensive, negative, or elitist.

Maybe press release at 12:12 PM?

If it is tomorrow, it will be a predetermined part of our lives that God has intended. We will embark on a new journey, full of surprises and excitement that stimulates our intellectual and personal curiosity. Life as we know it will change for the chosen ones, and the fortunate few will lead America and the world into the rest of the 21st century, overcoming the greatest obstacles the world has ever seen. Forget the Greatest Generation of World War II, we, Generation Next, will become the greatest generation Earth has EVER seen!

Toooo much speculation. And negativity! What happens happens, no reason to argue about hooked or unhooked or whatever. I’m just going to keep posting this for all the new people.

Is there a relationship b/t UPenn decisions and those of Stanford? I know UPenn comes out tomorrow… I know you crazies will look into it

maybe that’s why I like stanford. unique and spontaneous and crazy and trolling xD

Hi guys! I’ve been stalking you since post like 50 LOL
I decided to join the bandwagon.
I come from Irvine in Orange County, CA and geez are the kids elitests here :’( I mean I have the grades and test scores and a few EC’s sprinkled here and there, but no where near curing cancer that it seems some of my peers have been up to…
The only way i think i even have a .000000000000000000001% chance of getting in is via my essays…They took a completely different stance of me…personal statement was on my friendship with a 70 year old senior and how it helps me get over the fact i knever knew my grandparents, another focused on my love for poetry, another on keeping a friend from suicide, and another on me pretending to be a bird when i was a kid (Future AeroE hopefully-maybe boost by being female?) lol anyways…just had to tell you, I’m prepared for the worst*:’(

I don’t see Upenn decisions affecting Stanford decisions…

Statistically you are correct, and nothing inherently in the comment was offensive. What bothers me is that people seem to believe that although “hooks” add statistical advantage to admission that hooks have a quantifiable advantage in things like SCEA, as if a certain number of slots would be reserved for them in the SCEA pool. There are obviously spots for athletes but that’s for other, more logical reasons. In general, I believe saying something like “out of 2000 admitted students, 400 will be hooked” is a useless thing to say. In a way, 100% of the class at top schools is hooked. Everyone’s hook is being incredibly talented and intelligent.

Dude, let’s keep the proselytizing off of the thread. We’re a thread of diversity <3

@khu: Hi! welcome to this crazy thread! we need a doctor here :P

Sorry about that :O. I’m just so anxious. Is this a CC record number of posts on a single thread?

loool im bracing myself for the worse, and hey think about it this way…If we do get rejected, which in reality many of us will, they knew it was for the better. They only want the best for us and have no real hatred towards us. Who knows, when one door closes it lets us stop peeking into that 1 room and look around at all the other options open to us

@darth: wow I envy your writing skill… I will never ever get to that level ;/

@deregon
I think that generally, “hook” is used to mean some characteristic that makes an applicant stand out. Most Stanford applicants are incredibly intelligent, so that doesn’t qualify for the usual definition of hook. Since hooks make an applicant stand out, they usually come with some advantage in the admissions process. The quantifiable aspects would be through statistics showing that applicants with x hook were admitted at an x% higher rate.

Where is the love? 1 of two good songs by the Black Eyed Peas.

Really? I like at least ten songs by blacked eyed peas

Hah I don’t think the adcoms are concerned with the best for all of us. I think they are doing their best to create an amazing class. There isn’t time, energy, or the possibility to make the “best” decision for all of us because the reality is that most Stanford applicants would be successful if offered admission.

I agree about the value of moving on and stuff though.
